For the second Solent harbour webinar, we were joined by historian and archaeologist Stephen Fisher. An expert on D-Day embarkation, Stephen talked us through the south coast’s role in Operation Neptune.
D-Day required a massive amount of groundwork to be put into place along the south coast of England. Whilst some of this preparation is well known - such as the role of Mulberry and PLUTO - numerous infrastructure changes are almost completely unrecognised, despite being exclusively for Operation Overlord. All across the south are main roads that owe their unusual width to parking areas for tanks, slipways for pleasure boats that once embarked men and vehicles onto landing craft, and breakwaters and ferry facilities made from components of Mulberry Harbour. This talk explores the role and archaeology of these sites and the need to better recognise them before they risk being lost.
You can read a little bit more about D-Day embarkation in Stephen’s guest blog here.

One of the questions I was asked at the end was about the cost of the improvements. I couldn't answer at the time, but after checking some sources, here are a few figures. £1.2m was set aside for the hard construction programme in 1942 and 1943, although I don't know what the final bill was. The 1944 improvements are mentioned in the Official History of Works and Buildings and amount to £1.75m, which came from the government's Road Fund (thank you to Daniel Todman, author of Britain's War for the second figure).
