Nicky Hopkins was the piano player. He was a very popular session musician who played a lot with the Stones, Beatles, and many other great groups of the time. The other contribution that I just love is John Lennon's Jealous Guy. But with the Stones, Nicky Hopkins contributed to some great classics.

Great reaction. The Stones experimented in psychedelia as it was popular at the time and made one of the best psychedelic albums , despite being panned by the critics . They then went back to their roots and released Beggars Banquet, one of the greatest albums of all time.

"She's a Rainbow" is a song by the "Rolling Stones" and was featured on their 1967 album "Their Satanic Majesties Request". It has been called "the prettiest and most uncharacteristic song" that "Mick Jagger" and "Keith Richards" wrote for the Stones, although somewhat ambiguous in intention. The song includes rich lyricism, vibrant piano by "Nicky Hopkins" and "Brian Jones" use of the Mellotron. "John Paul Jones", later of the band "Led Zeppelin", arranged the strings of this song during his session days. Backing vocals were provided by the entire band except for "Charlie Watts". Notably, all of the vocals sound like soft background singing with the music overshadowing them to the point of the lyrics being difficult to hear. The lyrics in the chorus share the phrase "she comes in colours" with the song of that title by the band "Love", released in December, 1966. The song begins with the piano playing an ascending run with a turnaround, which returns throughout the song as a recurring motif. This motif is developed by the celesta and strings in the middle 8. Humorous and ambiguous devices are used, such as when the strings play out-of-tune and off-key towards the end of the song, and when the other Stones sing their "La La's" like little children. The song is in the key of B flat. The ascending run starts on C and goes up the Bb scale : C D E♭ F G B♭

One thing to keep in mind is artists like the Stones, Beatles, The Who were all born in the 40's in a pre Rock &Roll era. They all took the concepts of American blues, big band and orchestral music in terms of arrangements, building a sound reworking beats and rhythms to create a whole new type of music R&R all based on music they grew up with

I believe this came out around the time The Beatles Sgt Pepper album came out, which was about the same time for The Beach Boys Pet Sounds came out. It’s amazing that they didn’t have the technology to automatically create the soundscape they want, they had to figure out a way to create those sounds they hear in their heads. Hahaha …. “In the mirror …”

@@flyingburritobro68 Come on now. As a stones junkie I know Nicky played keys and Brian was on mellotron. Brian’s no show pattern really gets going with Beggars. With SMR my point is Brian is all over the overall album with not only his instrumentation, but I’ve read that he was de facto musical arranger given that Jagger Richards produced it but Jagger (even he has stated) had little clue. Brian by this time was more familiar with all of this (having worked on a Degree of Murder and his earlier arrangements in 66/67 on so many musical tracks). Don’t forget that Brian soon after would also produce the Pipes of Pan album. Personally, I think had he lived, he could have gone the producer/arranger route along with doing session work. I guess I’m a nut shell I’m saying that Brian’s musicianship really elevated SMR, I don’t look at Rainbow with my comment in isolation. I look at it as the sum of the parts. Cheers

This was The Rolling Stones' version of the Beatles' "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album. This was a perfect example of true musical innovation that The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were putting out back then. Both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones took music to another level. I highly recommend you look further into the Rolling Stones and Beatles, especially from 1966 and on.

This was recorded in the days when the Stones were trying to play catch up with the Beatles. This was not really well received but it got airplay because they are The Rolling Stones. They never could catch up to Sgt Peppers because that really wasn’t their style. When they stuck to their bluesy heritage they excelled and often beat the Beatles in that area.
