In May 2022, I made a video about the rolling stock of the New York City Subway's A Division. In the video, I talked about what could cause changes to the rolling stock's assignments and predicted which types of subway car models may appear on which lines. This video is the second part of the video as mentioned above, only now, we'll be talking about the B Division's rolling stock.
There are eight (9) different types of subway car models used for the B Division, with one of the types of models planned for the future, and three other types awaiting retirement. How will the subway car assignments change? Watch this video to find out!

Logical R211 Car assignments Base Order (440 cars) Most cars in the Base order are going to the A and C to retire 356 R46's at Pitkin Yard; the exceptions are the 75 R211S for Staten Island Railway and the 20 R211T pilot trains with open gangways. The A will keep their 10-car R179's. Option Order 1 (640 cars) The 640 cars in 1st Option Order around 40 of them are going to Pitkin Yard for service expansion on the A and C. The Rest of the 600 cars are going to Jamaica for the E and F. Since Queens Boulevard is the busiest corridor in the B Division, the design of the R211's with higher total capacity and wider doors are ideal for those lines. 570 R160's will go to Concourse and Coney Island for B and D Service, adding 30 extra cars for service expansion. All R68's and R68A's which cannot be retrofitted for CBTC, will be relegated to Coney Island to run on the N, Q and W lines, as Broadway will be the sole remaining corridor without CBTC; however this adds 72 cars in the process, also allowing for service expansion. Jamaica will be left with 720 R160's, adding 30 cars for service expansion on the E, F, G, and R lines (There aren't enough R211's yet to make Both the E and F 100% R211's, so R160's will be used on either or both.) Option Order 2 (405 cars in 5-car units) The 5-car units in the 2nd Option order, 195 cars will go to the C, with 110 of them pushing out the 88 R178's to the J and making all C trains full length at 10-cars each, and the remainder adding 85 more cars for further service expansion on the A and C. The rest of the 210 cars are going to Jamaica, 120 of them to make the E and F 100% R211's, and the remainder adding 90 more cars for service expansion on those two lines. Meanwhile, 60 more R160's are pushed out to Concourse for further B and D expansions. The Remaining 660 R160's at Jamaica are enough to also make all G trains full length at 10-cars each, and the remainder adding 155 cars for service expansions on the G and R lines. Option Order 2 (32 cars in 4-car units) All 4-car sets in the 2nd Option Order, 32 in total, are going to East New York for the M line. 88 R179 cars coming from the C will also provide service expansion; the J won't need to borrow from the L line as much, allowing them to keep more of their 276 R143's and R160's cars already configured for the unique CBTC system used there, of which there is more than enough, so they don't need new trains. To Wrap up: A/C/Rockaway Park Shuttle: 130 R179's (A Only) 695 R211's B, D: 630 R160A-2's E, F: 790 R211's G, R: 660 R160B-'s J/Z: 188 R179's, 40 R160A-1's L: 212 R143's, 64 R160A-1's M: 268 R160A-1's, 32 R211's N/Q/W: 416 R68's, 200 R68A's. May use a small amount of R160's During weekends when the B is not running.

Car Equipment Department is my favorite one in the New York City Transit agency. Your suggestion for Metropolitan Transportation Authority to approve a budget for New York City Transit to purchase 950 R211 cars must be idealistic and practical. It makes honest-to-goodness sense to have a full fleet of railcars on hand. Also, the smart railcars or the New Technology Cars as they are called, could save energy in the interim. The electricity from the railcars, themselves, is returned to the third rail, as motormen once coasted their trains in the 1970s decade, but the practice did not improve overall train service. Your video show is right up my niche.

CBTC is being work on the Queens Blvd line, eighth Avenue line from 59 street to Euclid Avenue on the Fulton street line, the Crosstown line since the modernization of the Culver line is still being work on, the two connectors 53 and 63 street to the entire sixth avenue line which has an 80 year old equipment and throughout the Brooklyn lines. The rest of the IND line to equipped with CBTC will come after but they need additional cars and upgrades. So the portions of the IND that are being work on for CBTC will use the three hi tech car fleets the r160, r179 and the r211s. Queens Blvd line has 1290 r160 and four of us he routes with he E,F,G and the R uses a combined total of 1095 cars during rush hours leaving 195 cars left. So the extra cars from the r211s totally depends on if the Queens Blvd is keeping the entire r160 fleet or relocate them to a different yard like the concourse yard. I start with the A and C, they utilize combined total with the shuttle to about 304 r46 cars out of 356 cars, 92 cars in four car units and 130 cars in five car units of the r179 and two to three sets of r211 are put in service during the daytime hours. So they would need 500 to 600 r211 and keep the 130 r179 giving them a total of 730 cars. The 92 cars will be transferred to the East NY yard. Between the routes the B and D, the BMT Broadway routes N,Q and W which also uses the r46 and the Queens Blvd routes, this is going to be tough but giving the fact that CBTC is being work on the IND lines portion of if, the B and D would have to utilize the new trains either the r160 or the r211s at some point. The B runs 25 trains so it's needs 250 cars while the D is 29 to 30 trains so it needs to utilize 540 to 550 cars plus 120 to 200 cars giving them a range between 670 to 750 cars with more than 500 to use peak hours with the extra cars from rotation or extra capacity. The Queens Blvd would take the remaining cars not use by either the A,CB or D trains. The N,Q and W would have to use the r68s since they won't get to the BMT lines yet.

R160’s we’re swapped to Jamaica permanently for Queens Blvd CBTC the MTA never planned on R211’s going to Jamaica since there is a surplus of R160’s at Jamaica the initial plan was for the R211’s to go to the N, Q, and W for Broadway CBTC but the MTA decided for 6th Ave CBTC instead of Broadway so the R211’s are headed for the B & D instead of the N, Q, W. There was never a plan for R211’s to go to Jamaica since Jamaica has all of the R160’s with a higher capacity it’s sad how people have to make false rumors because that was never the plan, the plan was for R211’s to go to Coney Island that’s why Coney Island surrendered their R160’s but the MTA chose 6th Ave CBTC instead. There was never a plan for R211’s to go to Jamaica some foamer made up that rumor so Coney Island can get their R160’s back. R211’s are NOT going to Jamaica since there is more than enough R160’s at that yard. R211’s are going to the A, C, B, and D lines and once 6th Ave CBTC is in the works R211’s are headed straight to the B & D to push the R68/R68A card to the N, Q, and W lines.

Broadway CBTC is not coming soon. The r68 and r68a will be on the N Q and W lines and the displaced r68 from concourse will go to coney island for the n q and w. The NTT will go to concourse for the D and the Coney Island for the B. The R211 you think will also go to the concourse and coney island yard. In 2025, there are NTT's on the B and D lines.

The R211 Car Assignments should be straightforward Base order (440 cars) All 440 cars in this order would be assigned directly to Pitkin Yard. This allows for 310 cars for the (A) and 130 cars for the (C), and also a direct replacement of the 356 R46's cars assigned to Pitkin Yard. That would leave 75 R211S for Staten Island Railway Now as for the 20 R211T Pilot trains with Open Gangways those will be assigned to Jamaica for the (F) line, The MTA Literally Confirmed This, While Both the (A) and (C) will rotate between the (5-car) R179's and the R211's Option order 1 (640 cars) Of the 640 cars in the 1st Option order, 130 of them are going to Pitkin Yard for the (C) and the Rockaway Shuttle to Act as Spare units and to Push out the (4-car) R179's to East NY for the (J/Z), making all (C) trains full length at 10 cars each. The Other 510 cars are going to Jamaica for the (E) and (F) lines. Since Queens Boulevard is the Busiest corridor in the B Division the R211's terms of design is total highest capacity and wider doors which reduce dwell times are ideal for those lines. While 405 R160's will get displaced over to Concourse Yard for (D) service, indirectly replacing a portion of the 396 R46's by sending all 268 R68's to Coney Island Yard for the (N), (Q) and (W) which are NOT getting CBTC Anytime soon However the (N), (Q) and (W) could use a small amount of R160's During weekends when the (B) isn't running Option order 2 405 (5-car units) All 405 (5-car sets) in this order are going to Jamaica for the (E) and (F) lines, No surprise there since the line is already at capacity, and a 10% capacity increase from the open gangways can make all the difference in crowding on the trains. Seriously why have the most crowded lines in the B Division have zero open gangway trains when other lines are not routinely crowded? Literally makes zero sense. All R211's will make up the entirety of the (E) and (F) lines. As a result of all of this, All 320 Alstom and Siemens R160's will get displaced over to Coney Island for (B) service and All R68 and R68A's will be moved over to the N, Q and W. The Remaining 565 Siemens R160's at Jamaica, 65 of them to make All G trains full length at 10 cars each and service expansion for the (G) and (R) lines. With the 92 (4-car) R179's will be displaced over to East New York (and by extension, Canarsie and Fresh Pond Yards). No cars would be moved out of there as a result, resulting in more trains available for both the (J/Z) to reduce the need for R143 fleet rotations on the (L). The move of the (G) back to Jamaica Yard, which took me by surprise, has changed things and new assignments will be needed Option order 2 32 (4-car units) All 32 (4-car sets) in this order would be placed in the Eastern Division to increase the spare factor; 92 (4-car) R179's Coming from the (C) would also provide service expansion pushing out the 56 R143's to the (L) line for service increase, allowing them to keep more of their R143 and R160's already configured for the unique CBTC system used there of which is more than enough so they don't need new trains. The Final assignments would've been: (A): 310 R211's, 65 R179's (B): 320 R160A/B's (C): 130 R211's, 110 R211A's, 65 R179's (D): 405 R160A-2's (E): 200 R211A's, 205 R211T's (F): 310 R211A's, 200 R211T's + 20 R211T's (G): 215 R160B's (J/Z): 188 R179's, 56 R160A-1's (L): 212 R143's, 96 R160A-1's (M): 220 R160A-1's, 32 R211's (N/W): 304 R68's (Q): 112 R68's, 200 R68A's (May use 40 R160A/B's during weekends when the (B) isn't running) (R): 350 R160B's Rockaway Park (S): 20 R211A's

They'll required more cars to relocate the 92 four car units to the J line. Option order of 640 cars to just assigned to the B and D and they can get an additional 140 cars when the second option is approved and schedule to deliver and tested. Last option order can be done after MTA confirm the results of two open gangway prototypes which gives the amount of 437 cars, 210 for the A and C while 115 cars for B and D trains. This would give the A and C trains with 670 cars of r211 with the B and D trains 755 r211 cars leaving 80 cars for extra service. The G train could use it if the MTA decided to go for full length trains. 92 cars of r179 to be transferred to the J line, 75 cars of r211S for SIR and 32 four car units to the J line since the rest of the r160 units to be retrofit with CBTC

The video is good, but what a lot of people don't get is that Concourse Yard is too small to handle more than one line. So, if/when the B and D receive R211's, it would make more sense to assign them to both Concourse Yard AND Coney Island Yard.

An 8 car R179 was doing CBTC testing on Queens blvd so if the tests are successful the 8 car R179s can also run on the M, This would allow ENY to reduce their spare factor. Right now ENY has the highest spare factor in the B division due to the J/Z,M and L lines using different groups of R160s. The M currently is starting to use more 9900 series R160s (before 9951-54 were the only ones running on the M) and anything past 8612. This allowed them to send another set of R179s to 207th for the C. If the M start using R179s, This would allow them to be more flexible with the fleet where they can lose more 8 car R179s to the C making it 90 to 100% 8 cars (temperately) to get the R46s off the C 2nd point, The C only use mixed length fleet is because MTA wanted the R32s gone, This is why the R46s are on the C which itself causes issues. Running mixed length trains is a very dumb move and it should have never happened in the first place. 3 The E will likely get R211s along with the F, this would allow them to push the siemens R160s out first then whatever R160s afterwards (9803-9942 are likely to leave jamaica as well since they weren't modified like the others (coumo R160s). These R160s would go back to Coney Island for the B, N,Q/W with the majority of the fleet being on the B. 6th ave CBTC won't be completed in 2025, I would say 2028-2030 at the latest since CBTC work hasn't started yet. The same for crosstown. Broadway when it gets CBTC won't be done until at least 2033-35. CBTC work takes awhile. 8th ave is already delayed but i would say 2026 is when 8th ave CBTC would be completed. Also I still think Concourse will get a chunk of R211s as well. It would make more sense to give the D R211s vs R160s as the R211s would be a huge improvement for the D due to its wider doors.

They likely group similar cars because it makes it easier to exam and swap stock if they're mostly based from the same depots. Trains have to go through multiple exams over different timescales - so stock always has to be swapped about within given mileages (else the units have to come out of service). Plus drivers based at depots - AFAIK - only sign certain stock. So if all the drivers sign the same units then you won't get as many issues with drivers not being trained. Also drivers usually have to do exams over routes and stock every so often (say...2 years, but i don't know about the NY Subway). Thats what happens in the UK too.

I Believe that SAS should extend further toward the Bronx, but this needs to be a 4-tracj route to be effective. That's why I think they should at least try to build the new SAS express tracks underneath the existing ones north of 63rd or at least on a nearby street, with the intention of providing express service to the Bronx. Two 4-track branch would split off, with one route going northward via 3rd Avenue to 163rd Street, and then along Boston Road to 169th street and Crotona Avenue to Fordham Road. From there this line would continue under Bronx Park and operate along Allerton Avenue for a bit and travel along Laconia Avenue until Burke Avenue, where it would connect with an extended D train via Burke Avenue, and then along Boston Road to Dyre Avenue. This line effectively replaces the IRT Dyre Avenue 5 train, with 5 service instead terminating at Wakefield-241st Street. Another 4-track line would turn east along 149th Street, then cross through Hunts Point and serve the Southeast Bronx via Randall Avenue and eventually Lafayette Aveune. This should truly help ease crowding along Lexington Avenue due to availability of new fast rapid transit options in these areas. For a Brooklyn extension I do agree with having SAS go via The IND Fulton Street Line to simplify things over there. However, with a 4 track SAS, I do propose having the other two tracks take over B and D service via Manhattan Bridge, allowing for the former two to better serve Northern Brooklyn (maybe set the stage for a new South 4th Street Line?)

R211 Car assignments Base order (440 cars) R211's The Base order of 440 cars are going to the A and C to retire 356 R46's at Pitkin Yard; the exceptions are the 75 R211S for Staten Island Railway and the 20 R211T Pilot trains with open gangways. The A will keep it's 10-car R179's meanwhile the Rockaway Shuttle may receive R179's to retire their R46's Option order 1 (640 cars) R211A 40 cars in the 1st Option order are slated to go to Pitkin Yard for service expansion on the A and C The Rest of the 600 cars are going to Jamaica for the E and F Since Queens Boulevard is the busiest corridor in the B Division. The R211's design of total highest capacity and wider doors are ideal for those lines 570 R160's will go to Concourse and Coney Island for B and D service. While all R68/A's which cannot Be Retrofitted for CBTC will be transferred to Coney Island to Run on the N, Q and W, as Broadway won't get CBTC anytime soon but the N, Q and W can use a small amount of R160's During weekends when the B is not running (There aren't enough R211A's yet to make Both the E and F 100% R211's, so R160's will used be either or Both). Option order 2 405 (5-car units) The 5-car units in the 2nd Option order, 195 cars will go to the C, This will Push out 88 R179's to the J/Z and making all C trains full length 10-car Trains, and the remainder adding 85 more cars for further service expansion on the A and C. The Rest of the 210 cars are going to Jamaica to make the E and F 100% R211A's and for service expansion on those two lines. meanwhile 60 more R160's are pushed out to the B and D for further service expansions. The Remaining 660 R160's at Jamaica are enough to make G trains full length at 10-cars each, and the remainder adding 155 cars for service expansions on the G and R lines. Option order 2 32 (4-car units) All 32 4-car sets in the 2nd Option order are going to East New York to increase the spare factor and service increase on the J/Z and M lines This will Push out 56 R143's to the L line for service increase. Meanwhile the L line won't receive any R211's Due to the already configured Unique CBTC System Used there which is more than enough To Wrap Up: A/C/Rockaway Shuttle: 130 R179's (A only), 695 R211's B, D: 630 R160A-2's E, F: 790 R211A/T's G, R: 660 R160B-2's J/Z: 188 R179's, 40 R160A-1's, 28 R211's L: 212 R143's, 64 R160A-1's M: 268 R160A-1's, 4 R211's N/Q/W: 416 R68's, 200 R68A's. May use a small amount of R160's During weekends when the B isn't running With these assignments the R211/A's will go on high volume lines like 8th avenue and Queens Boulevard A, C, E and F lines plus there is also a chance that the entire 2nd Option order can be 437 R211T's which will help with overcrowding especially on Queens Boulevard meanwhile the R160's will be pushed to lower volume lines like 6th avenue while Broadway will be stuck with SMEE's until Broadway Gets CBTC in the MTA's 2025-2029 capital program for the people saying that Jamaica is staying 100% R160's that is not true since the R211/A's/T's have a way higher capacity than the R160's and it doesn't make sense for higher capacity cars to be assigned to lower volume lines which wont be ready for CBTC in a couple of years keep in mind that the R211's are also CBTC Equipped and with wider doors and total higher capacity are ideal for Queens Boulevard it's like some people want the R211's on the N, Q and W so Badly which some of those people are going to get an egg on their face once you see Jamaica receiving R211's and Concourse and Coney Island with R160's and with the N/Q/W being stuck with R68/A's until Broadway Gets CBTC which won't anytime soon

For Everyone replying Queens Boulevard has high ridership and CBTC is already installed there, the R211A's have more capacity than the R160's since the R211A's don't have corner seats with fewer seats and with more passengers standing we can fit more people into each train car and with the wider doors which reduce dwell times people can load and offload onto the train faster. Queens Blvd is routinely crowded which the (E) and (F) have those two criterias, High ridership and CBTC once again Queens Blvd is a line with high ridership, behind the Canarsie Line and Flushing Line. Therefore it would make more sense for the R211's out of the option orders to go to Jamaica Yard. Fleet assignments are based on CBTC installations and Fleet Age to some extent, with CBTC taking priority. A line like the 8th Avenue (A) and (C) trains do have old cars, and are in the process of getting CBTC. Therefore, it would be beneficial to get R211 cars. In contrast, you have lines like the Broadway Line (N/W) and (Q) that are using old cars, but are NOT earmarked for CBTC installation. Therefore, it would be unwise to send R211's over to all these lines. Now you have the open gangway trains. A big increase in space compared to the R160, a third criteria has been added. high ridership. As mentioned before Queens Boulevard has high ridership and crowding on the (E) and (F) routes is prominent. Given that QBL already has CBTC and these two lines have high ridership, it makes sense to have R211's go over there, with the R160 cars offloaded onto lower volume lines. It really makes zero sense for train cars of higher capacity (R211's) to be assigned with lower ridership volumes while high ridership lines get stuck with lower capacity cars (R160's). It doesn't really match. By doing the assignments in the way I mentioned with the R211's also considered for the (E) and (F) things become more efficient. By having open gangway trains on Queens Blvd which is the busiest corridor in the B Division we can increase capacity and fit more people into each train car by 10% which equals more standing capacity which makes Queens Boulevard and other B Division lines that have high ridership perfect candidates for open gangway trains. No surprise there since the line is already at capacity, and a 10% capacity increase from the open gangways can make all the difference between crowding on the trains. Seriously, why have the most crowded lines in the B Division have zero open gangway trains when other lines are not routinely crowded? Literally makes zero sense. Remember, just because the R211's are replacing the R46 cars DOES not mean that they only have to go to lines with these cars. It is definitely okay to assign these cars to lines that don't even have old cars like Jamaica and offload the cars from said yard to the yards with older cars. Queens Boulevard has a high volume of traffic and crowding. It is why it was urgent for them to retrofit Queens Boulevard for CBTC, In all actuality, the Queens Blvd CBTC is designed to accept any CBTC equipped railcar in revenue service except for the R143 and R160's, so any train car could be operating there it is why Jamaica has a larger chance of getting the R211 option orders. The wider doors and larger capacity make it obvious. With this R160's would be pushed out to other yards, like Concourse and Coney Island Yards, which both operate routes that are at lower capacity. It really makes zero sense to assign high capacity cars (R211's) onto lower volume routes while constantly overcrowded routes with no room to add additional trains are stuck with train cars with lower capacity (R160's). Jamaica is 100% on the list for R211 cars. Hell it makes perfect sense. High ridership + crowded trains + wider doors + open gangways + CBTC on that line = a match made in heaven.

CBTC are currently installed on portions of Queens Blvd, 8 Avenue line Fulton, Culver and Crosstown. The base order of 440 cars of r211 will be assigned to the A train. The C can use the five car units of r179 while retaining some of the r46 until the option orders of 640 cars. The A runs a total of 38 trains rush hours so 440 cars should be enough for the time being, the C can use 130 r179 in 10 train sets while retain some of the r46 like 120 while the four car units of the r179 would shift to the East NY yard for the J. Once the second order of 640 cars of r211 are tested and put into service, the C should be the second to get the r211 as keeping 130 r179 and add 600 r211cars should give them a total of 730 cars. I don't know if the C train's headaways can change to 10 trains per hour which is a six minute headways between Washington Heights and Euclid avenue unless they can extend the train to either lefferts Blvd or Rockaway park while the A handles two branches. Considering that CBTC is being installed on portions of the IND lines, either the Queens Blvd would retain the r160 and aquire at least 305 r211 cars or extra capacity of the E and F as well as the G but uncertain if I'll operate in full length since court square is a pain in the neck to utilize as a terminal due to it's interlockings. The B and D will require 600 or 700 cars or either the r160 or r211 cars while E,F and G can use the remaining amount of r211 cars. The N,Q and W will use the r68s until the r268 arrived and all are tested and put into service and at some point CBTC will be automated on the rest of the lines. 75 cars for the SIR and 32 cars in four car units to be adding to the M train which is too little when 72 cars should have been a bit more better. I can't wait till we get R211s to Jamaica. Once the 2nd option comes by, the better Queens boulevard will become recently. On top of that, The MTA should just let 6th avenue CBTC be the Last in line after 8th avenue CBTC comes first before others can get Tham in time.

@@TheRailLeaguer R211 Car assignments Base Order (440 cars) Most cars in the Base order are going to the A and C to retire 356 R46's at Pitkin Yard; the exceptions are the 75 R211S for Staten Island Railway and the 20 R211T pilot trains with open gangways. With these assignments the E and F can be 100% R211's Since Queens Boulevard has a high volume of traffic and with 660 R160's at Jamaica Yard we can extend G Trains to full length 10-cars it makes no sense to assign high capacity cars with low volume ridership like 6th avenue and Broadway since those lines have a lower volume Ridership with that R160's can return to Coney Island for B service plus with a small amount of 40 R160's go to the N, Q and W During weekends when the B isn't Running plus there is a chance that the 2nd Option Order of 437 cars in total can be all R211T Open Gangway if the 20 R211T pilot trains are successful the R211 terms of design are wider doors + more capacity = Reducing Dwell times So the R211's are ideal for lines with the highest ridership like Queens Boulevard and the 8th avenue line fit the criteria.

However, its ridership is too low to justify full length trains. They're better off switching to one person train operation for the G line to run additional trains. I think the main reason why the G gets smaller trains is because it is the only subway line (other than the Shuttles) that does not go into Manhattan, where everyone works and wants to go. But still many more people catch the G. Many more than you would even expect, because although it may not go into Manhattan, it provides a crucial link between Queens & Brooklyn and is also used mostly as a local services, connecting residents to their nearest supermarkets, local community events or personal essentials, so it is still quite a very important service that affects many people & their daily lives. They really need to re-extend the G back to Forest Hills & an extension out to Coney Island would also be great as well.

@electro_sykes I know that the G is busy. I've been on that route several times. My point is that it's not as busy as the others since it doesn't serve Manhattan. From there the other 510 cars will go to the F Route, Since Queens Boulevard is the Busiest corridor in the B Division, the R211's Design is total highest capacity and wider doors which reduce dwell times are ideal for those lines, this will displace 405 R160's over to Concourse Yard for the D Route while All R68's and R68A's which cannot be retrofitted with CBTC will get sent over to Coney Island Yard to run on the N, Q and W, as Broadway will be the sole remaining corridor without CBTC Option order 2 405 (5-car units) All 405 (5-car sets) in the 2nd Option order will be assigned to Jamaica Yard for the E service, making Both the E and F 100% R211's, moving around 320 R160's over to Coney Island for B service, Leaving Jamaica with 565 R160's for Both the G and R route, 65 of them to make All G trains full length at 10 cars each and service expansion for Both the G and R Routes No surprise there since the line is already at capacity, and a 10% capacity increase from the open gangways can make all the difference in crowding on the trains. Seriously, why have the most crowded lines in the B Division have zero open gangway trains when other lines are not routinely crowded? Literally makes zero sense. Option order 2 32 (4-car units) All 32 (4-car sets) in the 2nd Option order would go to the G line Since CBTC is coming to the Crosstown and Culver lines the MTA would need to run more trains to take full advantage of CBTC, because of the G line is very unlikely to ever go back to using SMEE cars ever again, not only this will keep the G with NTT's But will also increase service and extending G trains from 5 to 10 cars along the line helping with overcrowding issues with this plan the MTA could have increased frequency on the line allowing it to have more trains by using 10-car R160's and 8-car R211's making the G line have frequent service To Wrap Up: (A): 298 R211's, 65 R211A's, 61 R179's, 20 R211T's (B): 320 R160's (Both A and B sets) (C): 130 R211's, 65 R211A's, 61 R179's (The A and C will share a fleet) (D): 405 R160A-2's (E): 405 R211T's (F): 510 R211A's (G): 215 R160B's, 32 R211's (J/Z): 188 R179's, 64 R160A-1's (L): 212 R143's, 40 R160A-1's (M): 268 R160A-1's (N, Q, W): 416 R68's, 200 R68A's (May use 40 R160's [Both A and B sets] only during weekends when the (B) isn't Running) (R): 350 R160B's Rockaway Park (S): 12 R211's, 8 R179's

3:21 the reason for this is simply because R160s are the only car type available in large enough numbers to supply the E, F, and R for CBTC. Even if the MTA compiled all the 143s and 179s and put them in Jamaica Yard, it wouldnt be enough. Also the switch up on the N, Q, and W is crazy. Used to be the lines with the cleanest, nicest, and coolest train cars... and now they're the least priority lines in the whole system. Probably won't be getting new techs on them until the mid-late 2030s.

What about the Franklin Ave Shuttle? Its platforms can only accommodate 2-car SMEEs. My prediction is that due to its short platforms and the fact that it’s a continuation of the Brighton Line’s local tracks, Botanic Garden’s platforms can be extended to full-length and Park Pl and Franklin Ave can be relocated underground with full-length platforms. The line can then extend further north and connect with the Crosstown Line, thus eliminating the shuttle and converting it to a through-service. If the fleet will be expanded, this could be a possibility.

Here's my fantasy rolling stock assignment: Should the C be extended to 10-car trains, then the 8-car R179's currently assigned to the line can be moved to East New York to be used on the J/Z and M for fleet expansion. The J/Z will continue to share R143's with the L, but only during rush hours. Meanwhile, the A and C will share both R179's and R211's. The B and D are poised to get R211's, but I do think that, should both be assigned to Concourse Yard, they can also both receive some R160 Siemens units from the R, which I believe will use R160 Alstom units and R211's. The E and F can keep using both Alstom and Siemens units, but the F might share R211's with the R during weekends when the M doesn't run. The G I believe will mostly consist of R211's. I believe there is a slight chance that the G might be reassigned to Coney Island Yard to use only R211's, and preferably use 10-car trains instead of just 5, which, let's face it, should really just be reserved for shuttle lines. Now last but not least, we have Broadway. This bit is a little tricky to predict, but I believe that once the B and D have their R68/A's displaced by the R211's and maybe R160's, those trains will be moved to the N and Q for until the replacement of the R68/A's comes along. The W will use only R211's shared with the N as it is a hassle for train crews to change the rollsigns on every single R68/A car at Astoria-Ditmars, so the N will only use the R211's on weekdays when the W runs, but on weekends, it will use primarily R68's shared with the Q at Coney Island Yard. As for the shuttle lines, the Franklin Avenue Shuttle will continue using R68's until their replacement comes, and the Rockaway Park Shuttle will primarily use R179's from the A. Nothing else to say. Final Prediction: A/C: R179's and R211's. B/D: R160's (Siemens units only) and R211's. E/F/R: R160's (Only on E for both units, F and R will share Alstom units on weekends) and R211's (F and R will share units on weekends). G: R211's only. J/Z: R143's (Rush hours only), R160's, and R179's. L: R143's and R160's. M: R160's and R179's. N/Q/W: R68/A's (N and Q only [N trains on weekends only, Q trains all times]) and R211's (N and W only). Franklin Avenue Shuttle: R68's only until further notice. Rockaway Park Shuttle: R179's only.

I had an earlier response but I deleted it. Why? The math changes if All R179's are pushed out of the (A) and (C), though this would only be possible with the second option order. With the (A), (C), (E) and (F) being 100% R211's, the (A) and (C) get up to 6 more trains for frequency boosts, but the (E), (F), and (R) do not get any due to infrastructure constraints (primarily low-capacity terminals); therefore a ton of (5-car) R160's and R179's are pushed to Coney Island, enough to allow the (Q) to run R160's (and let the G return to Coney Island). I still don't like this though, because about half of all R68[A]'s would just sit unused. 33 [out of what would be 77 but currently 68] trains are used for the (N) and (W), so yeah, there won't be leftover R160's as BrianMercy is saying, but leftover R68[A]'s. And the 60th Street tubes seem unable to do better than 24 TPH, so I don't expect that 33 figure to increase at all unless MTA finally wants to go forward with deinterlining -- which I doubt because the MTA's new priorities indicate going in the opposite direction. In my calculations below, the only service boost I accounted for, besides the (A) and (C) (simply because there are R211's for it whereas the (E) and (F) cannot run additional trains), is the (G) train. Because the (G) is a shorter line that doesn't use that many cars to begin with and only interlines with one other train, I made it match (F) frequencies, where according to schedules, it consistently maxes out at 12 trains per hour, or every 5 minutes on average. The catch is that there are no more NTT's to make the (G) 10 cars, but capacity should still improve by 38%, and there should be fewer delays caused by merging (late trains would still cause problems but at least conflicts are no longer built into schedules). The result is that there are 17 extra NTT trains for spares and B/D/Q service boosts at Coney Island Yard. If the (Q) didn't use any NTT's, that number would be 39. -A/C and Rockaway Park Shuttle (Pitkin+207): 740 R211's (up from 680 in 5-car equivalents; only =630 needed to run the (C) every 5 minutes and both (A) branches and shuttle every 10) -E/F/R (Jamaica): 760 R211's, 355 R160's (1115 total with 40 spares each, down from 1290) -D (Concourse): 335 R160's -B/Q/G (Coney Island): 730 R160's/R179's, of which 560 would be in service (MTA may want to do something about Jamaica Yard being over capacity, which is why I have the (G) back here, and the reduction above) -N/W (Coney Island): 416 R68's + 200 R68A's, of which ... 264 would be in service. Yes, that's 352 spares, or 44 trains... -J/Z: 188 R179's, 40 Borrowed R160A-1's (23+4 trains; (J/Z) currently use 20 during AM rush hours) -L: 212 R143's, 64 R160A-1's (34 trains; (L) currently uses 24) -M: 268 R160A-1's, 32 R211's (33+4 trains; (M) currently uses 24)

Great though it is of note that the E and F are almost certainly getting the R211s, though farther down the order (probably at the tail end of the option 1 order going into Option 2 order). I think that both the (M) and (R) should both turn south from Forest Hills, and then run to the Rockaway Beach Branch. You might think that the (M) will pass by Metropolitan Av with this extension. To solve this issue, the (M) will no longer run along the Nassau St line. It will run into Brooklyn on the Culver Line, which will allow for all (F) trains to run express service on Brooklyn. There will be a shuttle between Myrtle Av and Metropolitan Av as Well. But at Myrtle Av, this shuttle will stop on the upper level of the station to prevent the shuttle and (J) trains from interlining. The M train new terminus will be Church Aveune on Culver meanwhile the MTA Should kill Just kill of the Z Train at this point because skip stop is useless this will open up the opportunity of J trains Running peak direction express service on Nassau

For Everyone replying Queens Boulevard has high ridership and CBTC is already installed there, the R211's have a higher capacity than the R160's Due to removing the corner seats and reduced seating for more room and standing capacity we can fit more people into each train car plus the wider doors which reduce dwell times and people can load and offload faster and more safely with wider doors plus QBL is routinely crowded which the (E) and (F) have those two criterias High ridership and CBTC once again Queens Blvd is a line with high ridership, behind the Canarsie Line and Flushing Line. Therefore it would make more sense for the R211's out of the option orders to go to Jamaica Yard. Now you have the open gangway trains. A big increase in space compared to the R160's by squeezing 10% more people into each train car, Remember open gangway trains have more room for people to stand and by removing the corner seats and reduced seating combined with the wider doors and is CBTC Equipped it's beneficial to put open gangway trains on lines that have high ridership and are routinely crowded like the (A), (E) and (F), you get the saying less furniture equals more room and if you knock out a wall that's even more room for people to stand that's why the R211T's have a much higher capacity why would the MTA waste their time to put R211T's on line with low ridership like the (C) and Rockaway Park Shuttle literally makes zero sense. As Mentioned before Queens Boulevard has high ridership and crowding on the (E) and (F) routes is prominent. Given this the QBL already has CBTC and these two lines have high ridership, so it makes sense to have R211's go over there, with R160 cars offloaded onto lower volume lines. It really makes zero sense for train cars of higher capacity (R211's) to be assigned with lower ridership volumes while high ridership lines get stuck with lower capacity cars (R160's). It really doesn't match. By doing the assignments in the way I mentioned, with the R211's also considered for the (E) and (F), things become more efficient. Fleet assignments are based on CBTC installations and Fleet Age to some extent, with CBTC taking priority. A line like the 8th Avenue (A) and (C) trains do have old cars, and are in the process of getting CBTC. Therefore, it would be beneficial to get R211 cars. In Contrast, you have lines like 6th Avenue line and Broadway line (B), (D), (N/W) and (Q) that are using old cars but are currently NOT In the process of getting CBTC and the (B) is a Part-time route that doesn't run on weekends and transfering them over to the (N/W) and (Q) just for the weekend can be quite a headache While the Broadway line is NOT Earmarked for CBTC installation Therefore, it would be unwise to send R211's over to all of these lines. Remember, Just because the R211's are replacing R46 cars DOES NOT mean that they only have to go to lines with these cars. It is definitely okay to assign these cars to lines that don't even have old cars like Jamaica and offload the cars from said yard to the yards with older cars. Many people really don't get the concept on how the MTA assigns newer fleets of subway cars plus the MTA did multiple Fleet swaps in the past, another Fleet swap won't be an issue, many people don't do research at all and run their mouths with insufficient information misleading others they usually get aggressive and being disrespectful if that happens I'm blocking them and I'm going to report them remember people need to be careful with what they say words are like swords you don't need a knife or a gun to hurt people words can hurt people too, some people are getting triggered over subway car assignments and changing fleet requirements that happen all the time in both subway and bus side? They will get an Egg on their face once you see the (E) and (F) with R211's, The (N)/(W) stuck with R68[A]'s and the (B), (D), (Q) with R160's just in case if they have to get rerouted via 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue with an occasional (N)/(W) trip. I'll mention this again the R262 order is for the (4), (5), (6) and 42nd Street Shuttle because Lexington Avenue is getting CBTC First The MTA has mentioned this in their 2025-2029 capital plan the MTA reasoning for having the R262's locked to the Lexington Avenue line is because it's the Busiest line in the A Divison and out of the entire NYC subway system that's why the MTA is trying to get Phase 2 of SAS to 125th street to relive the congestion out of the Lexington Avenue line with this the R142/A's will move to the 7th Avenue (1)&(3) lines if the MTA make the R142's CBTC compliant then the (2) would also use R262's if not then the R262's would just be for the (5), the R262's main purpose is to retire the R62/A's and to Allow for CBTC compatibility on the Lexington Avenue line. For some people that don't understand The R262's aren't going to the (1) or (3) They're going exclusively on the Lexington Avenue line because they're getting CBTC first. While the (1) and (3) gets displaced R142/A's from the (4) and (5). Lexington Avenue is getting CBTC followed by 7th Avenue. So while R262's are on Lexington, the R142 and R142A's will be out getting retrofitted with CBTC technology by then the MTA is gonna place them on the (1) and (3) lines and the (6) has to get R262's in order for CBTC so priority is definitely (4) (5), (6) and of course anything the (5) gets the (2) shares as well The R142's and R142A's that are on the (4) and (5) are compatible with CBTC but they have to be retrofitted. The R142 and R142A's didn't come with the technology they're 20 years old. While those are taken away to be fitted, the R262's will replace them (and are CBTC equipped with the technology off the bat). By the time R142 and R142A's are back, the MTA would've started working on CBTC for 7th Avenue. The important thing here is that the R262's definitely have to be on Lexington. And the 42nd Street Shuttle is getting R262's as well. Remember, in the MTA the oldest trains don't always get replaced directly with newer trains. There's a lot more to it

Agreed. But the problem: a train breaking down will cause more disruptions to service than a station breaking down, I feel like. But luckily, the MTA is doing their Station Re-NEW-vation Program to make small enhancements to the look of stations. In the past, the MTA also did ESI (Enhanced Station Initiative) for stations as well. But, ESI was a complete rework of the stations (tore them down and built back up) and the Re-NEW-vation is just minor improvements.

oh god, this has become the debate of the decade. (And I Just deleted my old comment because there's a lot I've learned since.) People have become nasty with each other debating whether R211s are going to Coney Island (for the (B) and (D) trains), Jamaica Yard (for (E) and (F) trains), or both (directly replacing R46s where they run now). This is of course in addition to the (A) and (C), which is accepted as a given now. Long story short, I'm team Jamaica, and I'll spend the rest of this wall text nerding out and elaborating you can stop reading now 😝). Assuming the second option order is taken, I think ten-car R211s will exclusively serve the (A), (C), (E) and (F) lines. With 150 trains, there's enough for the (E) and (F), which cannot run additional trains to boost frequencies due to low capacity terminals at WTC and Coney Island, as well as the (A) and (C), which can receive up to six additional trains to run more service with. I'd love for the five-car R179s to stay on the (A) (mostly for extra seats for the very long commutes to/from the Rockaways), but MTA probably wants consistency, for maintenance as well as training purposes, also Queens Blvd is the busiest B-Division corridor and, as mentioned earlier, have no room for frequency boosts, so the increased capacity onboard R211s would be appreciated. That displaces a shitload of five-car NTT's to Coney Island and Concourse to run on the (B), (D), (G), (R) (some stay at Jamaica just for the (R), so the (E), (F), (R) could run a mixed fleet with a 2:1 ratio of R211s/R160s), and even the (Q) line. According to one commenter, MTA wants to be able to reroute the (Q) onto CBTC 6th Ave lines whenever needed. I don't like this idea because it leaves too many R68[A]s unused; however the math does work out, with 142 R160 and R179 trains for all of the above. And if they don't do this after all, 77 R68[A] trains are still a lot for the (N), (Q) and (W). The (G) doesn't need the four-car sets; by the time deliveries for the second option order begin, all R46s are retired already, so that's 405 cars or (81 five-car sets) added to the system. And the (G) doesn't use that many cars for service in the first place. What I hope they do is match (G) frequencies to (F) train frequencies (the (F) is more frequent currently); I estimate this would increase the maximum number of cars used for the (G) from 65 to 90, about a 40% increase (while decreasing merging conflicts), so maybe they can hold off on ten-car trains for now. I don't think it's a great idea for the (F) to run express in Brooklyn full-time until deinterlining is pursued. As a side note, Jamaica Yard is reportedly over capacity, so I would not be surprised if the (G) moves back to Coney Island. If this is done, then I estimate the (total quantity of full-length trains at Coney Island (not counting the Franklin Ave Shuttle) going up to 150; according to nycsubway dot org, this Yard has capacity for "near 1,800 subway cars". So the math works out too. Finally, it's only 11 eight-car R179s displaced from the (C). The (J) will actually need them. Why? The (J) currently borrows R143s and R160s from the (L) ---- but that's okay for now because the (L) cannot run 34 trains configured for its unique CBTC system until substation power upgrades are performed; if that happens the (J) probably cannot borrow from the (L) anymore. I was originally perplexed at just the 32 cars or the (8 four-car) R211's but it does make most sense for the (M) to take advantage of those after all.

I now realize that the A, B, C, and D lines won't be getting enough NTT's. 460 cars for the A/C and 640 cars for the B/D barely makes the cut. Here's what I propose to resolve this issue: 60 R160 cars leave Jamaica and go to Pitkin, replacing 356 R46s with 520 NTT cars. Then, an additional 60 cars go to CIY. Therefore, 360 cars for the (D), 280 for the (B). The 60 R160's simply serve as spares for the B, N/W and Q. Then, the G goes back to CIY, taking 70 R160's with it. My new assignments are as follows: (A)/(C): R160’s, R179's and R211’s (B) and (G): R160's and R211's (N)/(W) and (Q): R68/A's, R160's, and R211’s. (D): R211's (E), (F), and (R): 1100 R160’s(spare factor of 70 cars)

R160’s aren’t leaving Jamaica since the MTA wants fleet uniformity so keep dreaming

@mikemanners5803 It simply doesn't make sense for Jamaica Yard to have so many R160s sitting around, while the least reliable subway lines might end up with an insufficient number of R211's.

@@CLBT7437 you do know each yard needs a spare factor right? They’re all being used nice try. That’s a good thing there is extra equipment.’plus sending R160’s to different yards would cause maintenance nightmares for crews when it’s more simple keeping them all Jamaica since they’re doing fantastic there.

@mikemanners5803 460 R211's for the A/C is barely enough. Just like how 640 R211's for the B and D is barely enough. And no, they're not all being used. It's time for the debate to evolve. Jamaica Yard isn't the only B Division Yard with needs.

@@CLBT7437 exactly so Jamaica is doing perfect the way it is it’s time for Pitkin, Concourse, and Coney Island to get new equipment which will be R211’’s weather anyone likes it or not & all R160’s are being used at Jamaica they’re being rotated through the E,F,G,R lines and each of those lines have a spare factor so of course there will always be spare cars in the yard.

R211s have less capacity than the R160s. Fewer seats and more passengers standing don't equal more capacity. If those cars had more capacity than the R160s, the base order would be going to Jamaica, not Pitkin. Furthermore, dwell times have not been reduced. I've been on board the R211 (A) train several times. My R211 assignments: Base order(440 R211A cars) to Pitkin Yard for the A and C(most direct R46 replacement) 20 R211T cars(Jamaica Yard for testing purposes only) Then, permanent use in Pitkin. 1st Option Order(640 R211A cars) 350 cars to Concourse Yard for the (D) and 290 cars to Coney Island Yard for the (B), and occasional use on the (N) and (Q). 2nd Option order(81 five car sets) 350 cars to Coney Island to enable CBTC compatibility on the (N)/(W) line between Ditmars Blvd and 57th Street and eliminate the signage confusion on a lot of those trains. The remaining 55 cars go to Pitkin. 2nd option order(8 four car sets) Unless Queenslink is built, these cars have no business in East New York Yard. (J/Z), (L), and (M) service can't be increased due to infrastructure restraints in certain areas. I would send these cars to 207th Street Yard to extend the C to Lefferts Blvd, allowing the (A) to exclusively serve the Rockaways.

Yes, the R211 has decreased seats, in exchange for the wider doors.

@@TransitTalkNYC Jamaica has enough R160's to make the G run full length trains second the B will stay in Coney Island Yard because concourse Yard is small third Jamaica will get the R211's because they have more capacity than the R160's and they have wider doors and since the E and F have high ridership so R211's are going to Queens Boulevard

The R211's are only going on lines with high ridership, lines that already have CBTC and are in the process of getting CBTC and Fleet Age, which both the (E) and (F) fit those two criteria, Demetrius mentioned this in the MTA's press conference plus the MTA has done multiple fleet swaps in the past another given fleet swap won't be an issue. These Trolls keep on saying that If the R211's have more capacity than why didn't the MTA send the Base order to Jamaica instead of Pitkin Here's the thing the reason why the Base order cars were sent to Pitkin Yard Instead of Jamaica Yard is because the 8th Avenue Line is in process of getting CBTC It is why the Base order cars are going to Pitkin for the (A) and (C). These Trolls keep on saying that the R211's have less capacity (which is not true) because they looked it up on wikipedia here's the thing wikipedia and the news isn't an official source and isn't even accurate instead of doing more research and less trolling they keep spreading lies and insufficient information misleading others disguised as logic and reasoning. The R211's have higher capacity than the R160's by removing the corner seats and reduced seats for more room we can fit more people into each train car plus the wider doors which reduce dwell times so that people can load and offload faster that's why the R211's have higher capacity than the R160's. Now you have the open gangway trains. A big increase in space compared to the R160's, having open gangway trains on QBL we can increase capacity and squeeze more people into each train car by 10% which equates to more standing capacity that's even more room for people to stand and by removing the corner seats and reduced seats combined wider doors and is CBTC Equipped therefore it's beneficial to put open gangway trains only on lines that have high ridership like the (A), (E) and (F), you get the saying less furniture equals more room and if you knock out a wall that's even more room for people to stand that's why the R211T's have much higher capacity, therefore open gangway trains EASE overcrowding and does in fact increase capacity by 10%. It really makes zero sense for train cars of higher capacity (R211's) to be assigned with lower ridership volumes while high ridership lines get stuck with lower capacity cars (R160's). It doesn't really match. There's evidence hinting towards that the R211's have higher capacity and are headed to Jamaica Yard for the people refusing to acknowledge that the R211's are going to Queens Boulevard to bad Jamaica will get the R211's whether anybody likes it or not besides open gangway trains can make all the difference in crowding on the trains. Seriously, why have the most crowded lines in the B Division have zero open gangway trains when other lines are not routinely crowded? Literally makes zero sense. Therefore it's beneficial for Queens Blvd to get the R211's.
