I really enjoyed your lists, especially Jason’s top two. Shock value that none of you had “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” but at least not unexpected from Jason. My top ten: 10. "Jigsaw Puzzle" - Beggars Banquet griminess, with fantastic slide guitar and bass work. 9. "Parachute Woman" - This lived-in Chicago blues is one of the most underrated tracks in their entire catalog, with absolutely killer electric slide, ruthless drums, and sinister acoustic rhythm. 8. "Sway" - Keef doesn't play guitar on it, Mick Taylor just carries it. Tremendous feel and groove, with those Buckmaster strings at the end. 7. "Ruby Tuesday" - Long live Brian Jones, making this wonderful song an even better record with his recorder work. 6. "No Expectations" - Speaking of Brian Jones! One of his last substantial contributions to The Stones, with heartbreakingly beautiful slide work. Love the piano (Nicky?) as well. 5. "She's a Rainbow" - Jason nailed it. The final culmination of their pop period before ascending the thrones of pure rock godhood. 4. "Gimme Shelter" - Creeping apocalyptic dread, with that killer Richards guitar work and Merry Clayton's tragic cameo. 3. "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" - Come on, guys, this has two of the greatest rock hooks in history, with that supremely euphonious fuzz guitar line and the "I cain't... GET no!" vocal hook. It's as catchy as "Surfin' USA," which is really saying something, but of course with that deadly Stones menace. You either hear it or you don't, I guess. 2. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" - Kram so beautifully described what makes this track so phenomenal, and then left it off his top ten. They pulled out all of the stops to make this their tour-de-force. 1. "Street Fighting Man" - The absolute pinnacle of Stones menace, one of my very favorite tracks of all time. That phenomenal overdriven electric, the driving acoustics, the relentlessly ticking high hat and ruthless snare and tom work, the reverbed piano, the sitar and especially tamboura (we love you, Brian), and their greatest hook of all time on the "And what can a poor boy do, 'cept to sing for a rock 'n' roll band..." part, which Rod Stewart (who I usually like in that period) ruined in his cover. I'm glad 100 Years Ago made someone's list! I would have put it as my #10 too. In one way, it strikes me as a bunch of different ideas that were originally planned to be developed into full songs. But instead of doing that, they cobbled them together into one song. But I think it works because the lyrical content suggests a kind of anxiety over life happening too fast to appreciate it. So musically, you've got different nice ideas flying by you one after another and it kind of matches that sentiment. Each one of those different ideas is just so nice.
