One of the guys hanging out on the stoop with Mick Jagger is the late Peter Tosh who played lead guitar in The Wailers along side Bob Marley. He's the guy Keith Richards shakes hands with when he shows up. The sax solo in this song is played by jazz great Sonny Rollins.

@@Unlitedsoul Don’t think Tosh had anything to do with this track which was cut years before in 1972 with Mick Taylor. The musicians listed on it were the Stones 1972 period plus Nicky Hopkins on piano. Sonny Rollins overdubbed the sax and they guy you mentioned added percussion. The sax and piano were added just before the 1981 release. Tosh was not in the Stones orbit in 1972. It was years later when he signed to their label.
@Unlitedsoul3 жыл бұрын
@@flyingburritobro68 November 25, 1972, the Stones entered Dynamic Sound Studios in Kingston, Jamaica to begin work on Goats Head Soup. They would spend 3 weeks on and off recording in Jamaica before going to LA. This was where they recorded the initial work for Waiting on a Friend (and several other songs). Marley and Tosh were also in Dynamic Sounds until early December completing the final mix of Catch a Fire so that Marley could rush it back to London and Columbia Records for distribution. Tosh, as well as Bunny Wailer, remained in Jamaica until a legal dispute around the album involving Island Records and Columbia was resolved and the band was cleared to tour in April 1973. Keith Richards stated that quite a few Jamaican musicians were brought into the studio... including "that guy across the hall". Mick would state at the time of signing Tosh to the Rolling Stones label in 1978 that it was working with him on those sessions that caught their eyes and made them all wish to work with both him and Bob Marley in the future. So, maybe Tosh didn't work on the song... or the album years later, but Mick and Keith allude to his being there.

The video, shot in July 1981, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg (who also directed their 1968 special ), became very popular on MTV. Matching the song's lyrics, Jagger is seen waiting for Keith Richards in the doorway of an apartment block. The building, at 96-98 St. Mark's Place in Manhattan, is notable for having also appeared on the cover of Led Zeppelin's 1975 album . The two then walk down the street and enter the St. Mark's Bar & Grill where the other three band members are already drinking. Ronnie Wood appears in the video, although he was not a musician on the original recording. Jagger sings the song to Richards and the video concludes with the band setting up for a gig at the back of the bar, largely ignored by the other patrons.

song, as well as two other songs on the album. On his contribution to the track, Jagger said in 1985: "I had a lot of trepidation about working with Sonny Rollins. This guy's a giant of the saxophone. Charlie said, 'He's never going to want to play on a Rolling Stones record!' I said, 'Yes he is going to want to.' And he did and he was wonderful. I said, 'Would you like me to stay out there in the studio?' He said, 'Yeah, you tell me where you want me to play and DANCE the part out.' So I did that. And that's very important: communication in hand, dance, whatever. You don't have to do a whole ballet, but sometimes that movement of the shoulder tells the guy to kick in on the beat."[2]

I don't get it. Jagger dances like your drunk uncle at a wedding and is still the coolest guy in the room.

man...thanks so much for this one Jamel. This was one of my Dad's favs, he'd play it a ton always in to the sax solo. Dad passed summer of 2018 from a long battle with cancer. Brings back some good memories. Much love.

Please listen and react to Bruce Springsteen “Jungleland” original studio version with tremendous storytelling lyrics and emotion. With incredible music...IMO best rock song ever. Then later on check out a live performance from the 70s.

This song has me thinking about songs from 1981. The murder of John Lennon overshadowed the year for me. I don't think Jamel has reacted to 'Freeze Frame by J. Geils Band yet? I think that song, 'Mirror in the Bathroom' by The (English) Beat was out around the same time too?

Ive always taken this as he IS waiting on a lady, hes just not looking for a lady for physical companionship. Hes looking for a lady to provide the kind of emotional support that women are more inclined to provide, than a male friend.

Well that would make a lot more sense than a song and accompanying video about him just waiting there for Keith Richards of all people to show up?? And you'd figure they both would have already had more than enough of seeing each other in the studio,etc...???
@rumblehat43573 жыл бұрын
That makes sense with the lyric "making love and breaking hearts is a game for youth." Mick is saying he's past that part of his life and is looking for meaning.

I was listening to this song when I was walking through Manhattan to meet my husband to hang out. He was my best friend then not romantic so it wasn’t a date we were just meeting up, but the evening ended romantically. From then on we’ve been in love and we’re still each other’s best friends. They were sitting on the stoop because in Manhattan when the days were hot (no air conditioners) people would sit on their stoop and socialize with passer-bys.

Jamal, please do “Jessie’s Girl.” By Rick Springfield, he had many other hits in the early 80’s. Also “Missing You” by John Waite.

Rick Springfield was great! Don’t Talk to Strangers is a great song. John Waite is the man with the golden voice - he was in a band called The Babys, they had some chart toppers in the late 70s too.
