“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by The Rolling Stones
Producer: Jimmy Miller
Composers: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Lyricists: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Associated Performers: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Madeline Bell, Rocky Dijon, Al Kooper, The London Bach Choir, Jimmy Miller, Jack Nitzsche, Doris Troy, and Nanette Newman
Lyrics:
I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she was gonna meet her connection
At her feet was a foot-loose man
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well, you might find,
You get what you need
Oh, yeah
And I went down to the demonstration
To get my fair share of abuse
Singin’ “We’re gonna vent our frustration
If we don’t, we’re gonna blow a fifty-amp fuse
Sing it to me now
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well, you might find,
You get what you need
I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standin’ in line with Mr. Jimmy
A-man, did he look pretty ill
We decided that we would have a soda;
My favorite flavor, cherry red,
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and he said one word to me,
And that was “dead.”
I said to him
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well, you might find,
You get what you need
I was her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well, I could tell by her blood-stained hands.
Say it!
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well, you just might find,
You get what you need

Rest in Peace my dear Super Uncle, your song..... My Youth Hero and my rockstar and his long blond hair charming everyone that ever set eyes on him with his friendly ways and laughter. Took me to his bar as a 5 year old and he bought me a bottle of soda as I was watching the old generation playing cards drinking beer. The last couple of years when my Aunt died we would meet more often at the Bar, getting drunk and making memories. And now, as unfair as Life is, he is gone, died in his sleep.. Our family lost one of it's pearls Today.. The Stones lost one of it's biggest fans Today.

Growing up in the 1970's, my Father always said he wanted this song played at his funeral. When he saw the film: THE BIG CHILL in 1983, he cried. The film opens at a Funeral-- set to this ROLLING STONES' CLASSIC SONG. This song is iconic.

I’m here at 2:15pm and this song just hit me during the hardest times. My father just passed away due to the coronavirus. As he was fighting for his life for 2 weeks straight and a bunch of prayers. He passed away without having to say one last word to his kids. This song hits because you can’t always get what you want in life, but if you try and keep moving forward you can find light at the end of the tunnel..

My wife and I put our 2 1/2 year old twin girls down for a nap a few months ago. One refused to sleep, so I brought her downstairs. She loves music, so I asked our music device to play classic rock. My daughter started playing in a little tent castle my wife set up for her in our living room. We have been taking her to a speech therapist for some months because she has been having difficulty verbalizing like our other twin daughter. So there I was, sitting on the couch thinking, and worrying, and worrying about my daughter - and wishing she would verbalize more. At that moment, the Rolling Stones song “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” started playing. My daughter poked her head out of the tent, and she just looked at me … and she smiled. And I realize, she is just perfect the way she is, and she will learn to speak more in her own time. I am so lucky to have my children. “You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need, ah yeah.” So true. Count your blessings.

@mikebrown1485 --- that's a wonderful story! Thank you for sharing that. I am a retired preschool teacher, and your daughter will eventually verbalize when she reaches that developmental stage, or I should say her stage of development, in her time....I used to sing this song to my preschool class whenever they were fighting over not getting exactly what they wanted when they wanted it, and in just a few months, my entire class knew the words. In November one year, at parent teacher conferences, one of my parents said his son was singing it at home by himself and he laughed and asked him where he learned it, and his son said ms. mckinnie taught it to me and he said he started cracking up laughing.... Music makes a huge difference in everyone's lives and it's a great way to teach kids patterns and also math, as music is essentially mathematical in structure and design... Take care 🌹✨💜

My son had yet another heartache today, and there's literally zero I can do, except send him this song. It is what it is, man. Nobody said it wouldn't hurt. Honestly I wish it didn't. But life is unfair and full of pain and sorrow and the only thing we can do is make sure those don't turn into regrets, so we can put them down and move on.

In the summer months of 2019, Spotify harassed me with this song. Every daily mix I played, it was there. Every recommended playlist? It was there. I could not escape it. Then in late August of that year, I finally succumbed to the Spotify algorithm. Oh my God. I'm so glad I did. This song gives me a sense of nostalgia that I can't quite explain, and a sense of reassurance. I listen to it whenever I feel blue or just need a pick me up, and I also play it whenever. The beginning is wonderful, so is the acoustic section at 0:53-2:03 and so 3:28-3:49 and 4:16-4:30 AND 5:44 to the end. Actually, I stand corrected: 0:00-7:30 is the most magnificent part. Enjoy first-time listeners and thousand-time listeners alike! Edit: I was also supposed to see them in May, but of course that was canceled, and overall this song has helped me get through the hardships of 2020 and beyond.
