Similar reaction. A duck won't lay on a chicken egg to incubate but a chicken will do that for duck eggs. The ducklings will abandon the hen to go into the water and the hen looks at the ducklings confused.

Love how the cat was gently washing the chicks like they were kittens. Our old dog Sasha would Mother every small animal we had, puppies, kittens, chicks, ducklings, all of them. You're lucky your cat likes to Mother the chicks instead of eating them.

Dogs are almost immune to salmonella. Cats, not so much. They ate fresh small prey, while dogs were mostly going through our our rubbish, and being tossed scraps and byproducts. So the saliva and digestion of dogs is way more robust against bacteria than cats.

Reminds me of when I was doing a zookeeper experience, and I met a clutch of ducklings who had imprinted on a baby kookaburra. They had to make sure he was well fed so he didn't decide to eat on of his foster children.

A few years back, my cat actually helped take care of my duckings while their mom was in the animal hospital for almost a week with a wounded hip… he actually did a VERY good job, they adore him even today. 😊

There was a TREMENDOUS amount of faith in that rooster, i was worried but this turned out so wholesome! Cat was nervous when the chickens came in but held its own and was kind, and the chickens and cock even got comfortable at the end and kinda sat and closed their eyes. Was adorable to see! 🥰

i'm glad there's kind of a mutual understanding between the three parties the chicks see the chickens as their parents but the cat as a caretaker the cat sees the chicks as beings worth protecting and the chickens as their proper protectors and the chickens see the cat as a trustworthy non-threat it all just works out
