One in three adults is impacted by some form of allergic disease. This rise in allergies affects nearly 15 percent of the U.S. population and runs in tandem with autoimmunity, which suggests that immune system dysregulation could be to blame.
Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Elroy Vojdani to discuss the topic of food sensitivities, the top sources, and their impact on the development and progression of autoimmune disease.
Dhru and Dr. Vojdani discuss what puts people at risk for developing food allergies, the difference between intolerances and sensitivities, the benefits and limitations of traditional allergy tests, and alternative testing options. Dr. Vojdani also walks us through how to identify and remove problem foods from your diet while taking practical steps to repair the gut and restore immune function.
Dr. Vojdani is the founder of Regenera Medical, a boutique Functional Medicine practice in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Vojdani began his medical career as an interventional radiologist. While this experience gave him unique insights into hospital-based medicine, his mission to stop disease before it reaches that point remains at the core of his desire to practice medicine. Today, he continues in his father’s footsteps - pioneering to find answers to medical conditions that go undiagnosed and untreated. Dr. Vojdani has coauthored over 20 scientific articles and continues to play an integral role in research on autoimmune, neurodegenerative, and autoinflammatory conditions. He is the author of When Food Bites Back: Taking Control of Autoimmune Disease.
In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Vojdani dive into:
-Whether or not it’s possible to recover from lifelong allergies
-The three major classifications of allergies
-Examples of food intolerances and sensitivities
-The limitations of traditional allergy testing
-The story of how Alessio Fasano discovered leaky gut syndrome
-Chronic diseases that are related to food sensitivities
-The role of food sensitivities in F.L.C. (Feel Like Crap) syndrome
-Risk factors that contribute to the development of autoimmunity
-Top food sensitivities that drive inflammation
-Do allergy shots actually work?
-Comprehensive food and allergy testing
-Identifying food sensitivities, removing them, and repairing the gut
-Tackling nuances around dairy and autoimmune disease

Thank you for all the information, I have this issues for years, I did everything mentioned in this podcast. Unfortunately, when I felt better and reintroduce gluten and dairy, I went back to square one. I also developed a strong intolerance to sugar. Even natural sugar, eating out is a big problem. I was very unwell, severe brain fog, chronic fatigue, utter exhaustion, then an explosion of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, put on chemo by doctors, became very harmed, eventually sorted it out myself, did private blood tests found massive food intolerances over many foods, discovered leaky gut theory, looked at autoimmune disease, traced it to chronic inflammation, healed myself with foods, no help whatsoever from the UKs NHS. Food is the answer

Low carb, moderate protein and healthy fats. Nuts and seeds, cut out all dairy and wheat and coffee went organic where possible, drank bone broth made from high quality organic grass fed cattle in New Zealand. Drink apple cider vinegar every day, loaded up on Tumeric with black pepper supplements. Good luck. It’s a slow recovery but amazing results

Recently found that taking "therapeutic doses" of Amino Acids has helped with daily living - assuming that I am still not getting sufficient digestion - increasing my digestive enzymes intake incrementally now AND keeping up the Amino Acids adding inositol, colostrum soon .. (already at the upper limit on the HCL - nearly an entire bottle per meal - I have ACHLORHYDRIA, and apparently Pancreatic Digestive Enzyme Insufficiency. ... initially low thyroid too, but all three seem to be related in an autoimmune/allergy/food intolerance complex...

Mold exposure is definitely overlooked. Mold practically doesn't exist in the eyes of the medical world. We need it to be researched/established to the level that people can sue over it. Too many homes, apartments, and offices are made where mold thrives and people don't realize how much it is affecting them. Air Conditioners with mold in them that spread it throughout the house every day.

The heyday for mold lawsuits has long past. Many frivolous lawsuits were brought and as a result lots of people and businesses were destroyed in the process. The problem with mold is it becomes a he said / she said battle of mold experts in the courts. Ultimately those with the most money win. I personally was involved in toxic mold litigation. I was merely recompensed to be made whole despite having a lot of personal down time due to illness.

I retuned to my birthplace when I retired and I was very concerned that the allergies of my youth will also return, so I spoke to the elderly folk who advised to regularly consume ginger. I did not do it right away, but after I was given enormous amounts of antibiotics I needed to get probiotics regularly. Medical literature said use ginger for its fiber. So I started using ginger regularly, with no sugar added because its high taste makes you forget sugar. Ginger handled all of my allergies plus. For me it is the very best "medicine" that I ever took. I solved problems that I did not know I had. I use it as a tea twice daily. Nothing better.

Ginger is good but not to all groups of people. It is nice to hear that it is doing well to you. But I also heard that ginger is a blood thinner. The problem with taking this kind of food/spice is that we don't have the right dosage or how much to take. I take turmeric tea when I have GERD attacks. And it does well to me. But I do not take this often and I limit it to 1/4 teaspoon to a half cup of hot water as I don't know what is too much or not enough. Turmeric is not as strong as ginger and they are both anti-inflammatory. The problem with blood thinners is that bleeding is fast if there are injuries or there will be platelet problems like for dengue. I don't know much of the details tho. I hope everything goes well to you.

I was not breast fed, was on Soy. Got severe diseases as a baby...nearly died of German Measles. Had so many antibiotics, the bottles could fill a bathtub. In the '60's there was no talk of probiotics. I was tested and reacted to everything tested. Had drops to place under my tongue every meal. I have a mouth full of mercury fillings. I could see little difference after years of allergy treatments. Foods were taken away until i became malnourished. I run into nurses and others who think I am making it all up. Proteolytic Enzymes have helped with body aches& joint pain. Ginger tea is wonderful. One stout shot per day without sugar helped so much !. Four shots in, I felt better. I think leaky gut ruined my life for 40 years. I'm 62.

The 3 things that I have issues with that no one should be consuming are, 1)Cow’s milk and like products. First, no animal still drinks milk once it’s grown. Only humans do that. Second, cow’s milk is the hardest thing for your body to digest. 2)Gluten makes cuts in the lining of your gut, which causes leaky gut. 3)Sugar:Cut it WAY DOWN! This is the cause of disease, metabolic disorders, etc. You name it, sugar causes it.

Before wheat is really READY to harvest, it is sprayed with Roundup/glyphosate to kill it(?) so it will dry out/turn brown and be ready to harvest - maybe to meet the farmer's preferred schedule to cut it down?

There's a lit of food sensitivity in many people. Sometimes the body is not sensitive to a particular food but to the pesticides and the chemicals even in the water. I had food (many foods) and water sensitivities. Also Sometimes the body could develop sensitivity due to our emotional state while eating food. It's always good to record any reactions to foods. I kept records and was able to pinpoint the foods my body didn't like. Idid type of food (eg. Milk) type of reaction, (eg. abdominal discomfort) and min/hrs after consumption (eg. 10min).

Hello So I'm off sugar, grains, gluten, eggs and diary... for about 1 month. Main reason I got to this kind of a diet, is because of my skin condition, and yes, my skin is better, and I'm so happy about it. My skin cleared 80%, I'm more energetic, and I feel very good. I eat, meat, fish, vegetables(rainbow), and some very small amount of fruits also every kind of fruits. All the meals are prepared on the pork fat, no refined oils. I feel great after every meal, I don't feel sleepy, neither I lose energy. I lost about 3kg in this month, but I also exercise for a long period of time, and I'm in good shape. I'm fortunate to eat all the organic, homemade products.

I had severe rhinitis before when I worked in a highly stressed IT consultancy/technical profession. I used to work long hours in a closed air-conditioned environment. Over the years I developed severe rhinitis. One day I got afraid of the number of tablets/medicine I took and it's just a temporary relief. It's not even a cure to my illness. I spoke to my doctor about my concern. He suggested to change my environment. Indeed he's correct. After leaving my career in highly urbanized city and then now live in a country side place with a semi retired life style my rhinitis is gone. Also I get rid of staying in an air-conditioned placed for long hours. My house in wider land surrounded with lots of trees & sea breeze in my backyard give me clean air and get rid of rhinitis.

Ron very good point regarding vaccines and allergies. I had read that with the introduction in the late 80s of vaccines that had no liability and hence the numbers of the vaccines increased greatly from 3 in the seventies to 72 in the 90s children developed lots and lots of allergies that continued into adulthood. In addition with a covid vaccine there has been a huge increase in adults getting allergies where they didn't have them before or they didn't have them in such great numbers or in such intensity. ACTUALLY allergies r an auto immune reaction of the body attacking itself and it needs to be looked at from that viewpoint. I hope this doctor is able to do so. I live in Central Texas and everyone has problems with the cedar which gets more extreme at different times of the year but I seem to have allergies off and on throughout the year and I'm not quite sure if it's only cedar. IT definitely has nothing to do with food. I'm really solid that way I eat a very good and balanced diet because that's how I was raised. I do not like fast food. I have never liked fast food. It just tastes like s*** to me and my stomach hurts afterwards so I don't eat that and I don't eat processed food which has never attracted me. BEFORE I knew that one should shop along the borders of the supermarket, I'd always wondered what was in the interior of the supermarket thar people were buying and it is processed foods . Ugh

The way Doc described everything and shredded all details even about food molecule structure was just so amazing… because while I was watching this I thought “oh no I’m gonna have so many doubts about many things” and at the end of the video he described it so well that I have a better idea and confirmed that every time I eat fresh cheese (white cheeses) I get so many allergies. The way he speaks is so clear that even me being a non-native English speaker had no problem to fully understand every single topic. I consider this video a precious gem because I have been dealing with discovering what’s going on with my body for years by myself, in Mexico I haven’t found any Doctor Who really is into these subjects so deeply and so it has made my road complicated…now I have more tools to try again!! I will for sure start following his work and on my next trip to the states I will try to get an appointment with him, because he said what we are doing is part of self love! can you see the same trend with allergies and sensitivities in pets/dogs? for me its been super difficult to figure out what i can and can not tolerate, i was so so sick a year before with debilitating fatigue, arrythmia of the heart, high heart rate, joint pain, out of breath etc. all while being normal weight, healthy diet, 3-4 years of normal doctors and examinations of all kinds not finding anything. im functional now after elimination diet but its so so hard to notice what makes me feel bad, the symptoms seem to be sometimes 2-3 days offset. Things that im still very suspicious of and cant seem to reintroduce are eggs, gluten, grains, milk products ( cow, a2, buffalo, goat, sheep) nightshades, nuts, fermented foods, coffee, some teas. i also suspect im oxalate sensitive. my leaky gut is slowly healing, still have candida overgrowth and H pylori, strep and staph. while the 3 Autoimmune indicating bacteria has been removed! my Mitochondria test showed possible C vitamin deficiency and also a problem in the creb cycle in the step that needs water ( i do believe i have dehydration problems and electrolyte problems but no clear solution to get this to work) figuring out what i can and cant eat is just so difficult and i don't feel confident in what i believe is my current "list"( im really tired of meat and broccoli). one year later im in a constant state of ups and downs (but way better than i was)

Most health issues are related to over toxicity and deficiency. Clean your up diet, more then you have and look into lymph gland self massages. Then keep doing that, get sun, ground, eat less processed foods, less meat and more veggies. And perhaps you might have a Gluten issue? Our bread hear in USA isn't that healthy. Truth! Don't give up on feel better!! God Bless @@sugardaddy9992001

I had shingles about 3 yrs ago. It was horrible & concentrated at the back of my neck...I remember I was given antibiotics but remembered too what the doctor said....that it may heal but just latent, that it's just there & may recur...I was healed but again now having insufferable itchiness in that neck area too; also, while working before in Saudi before i also developed what the doctor termed as 'dermatographism' for which I was prescribed Claritin which I took for more than a year... My question is, will I ever get out of this skin discomfort...

Hello everyone, I currently don't have 2h to watch it all and frankly the answer should be right at the start, without random chitchat. Could someone be so kind and provide the time of the video when they get to the point? The gist of the answer should fit into few words afterall.

this is fantastic discussion, and i have allergies for quite some time and there is no way to find out why I get those. Very random and the foods that came out from my allergy test are the ones that i never eat :). My only reliance is allergy tablets, which i believ may nto be good long term. But still looks like there is no clear way to identify the cause of allergy.

Leaky gut? if it's peanuts dtp?, if it's Egg's mmr? I never was allergic then became allergic to Egg's around 14 after my MMR, or I would not have thought it possible...

I did an elination diet until I became a carnivore. Carnivore made me feel so much better and eliminated so many health issues I had that I'm not planning on ever changing it. It's so simplified my life as well.

Glyphosate! Blame the FDA letting our crops be poisoned. Workaround is eating ruminants that we've proven filter that trash out. Carnivore is the way.

Try fasting I do one meal a day and strecht the 24 hour per day with an hour. Low histamine food. No sugar and everything fresh. Reset of the system en than add stuff again to your dieet. Starting to feel good.
