"The Ropers" emerged as a spin-off from the hugely popular sitcom "Three's Company," capitalizing on the eccentric landlords, Stanley and Helen Roper, portrayed by Norman Fell and Audra Lindley. Premiering in 1979, the series provided a fresh perspective on the quirky couple, who had already won over audiences as recurring characters on the parent show.

Set in the fictional town of Cheviot Hills, "The Ropers" depicted the comedic escapades of Stanley and Helen as they faced the challenges of suburban life, dealing with nosy neighbors, peculiar acquaintances, and the everyday absurdities of domesticity. The show focused on the dynamic between the constantly bickering yet ultimately loving couple, whose interactions offered plenty of humor and mischief. While maintaining the humor of its predecessor, the series also delved deeper into the lives of its main characters, exploring their quirks, flaws, and peculiarities in more detail.
Norman Fell and Audra Lindley delivered outstanding performances, bringing warmth, wit, and charm to their characters, and showing remarkable on-screen chemistry. Despite running for only two seasons, "The Ropers" stands as a significant chapter in television spin-off history, highlighting the enduring appeal of beloved characters and the creative possibilities of expanding established franchises. While not reaching the same success as its predecessor, "The Ropers" made a lasting impact on television, showcasing the enduring legacy of its iconic characters and the timeless charm of classic sitcom humor.

Mr. Roper always made me laugh. I loved the way he would break character and acknowledge the viewer as though you understood the crap he had to put up with.

One of the reasons this and other shows were canceled was because ABC foolishly moved certain shows to different time slots. Which caused them to lose their audience. In 1979 The Ropers Angie and Mork and Mindy were all top 10 hits. When they moved to different nights all three shows took a dip in the ratings in the 79-80 season. Only Mork and Mindy made it to the fall 1980 season. But it never regained its massive ratings from its first season.

This show was the US version of 'George and Mildred', which was a spinoff from 'Man About The House', which was the UK original of 'Three's Company.' 'Man About The House' had another spinoff show - 'Robin's Nest'.

3’s company originated from the uk comedy “man about the house”. The Ropers in Man About The House were named George and Mildred which became the hugely successful spin off (George and Mildred). The reason it worked so well was the friendship and chemistry between the two actors. The only reason it ended when it did was due to the fact that Yootha Joyce who played Mildred Roper died at the age of 53 as a result of her alcoholism. The smiths used her photo on the cover of their single ‘Ask’ in 1986.

Where do you get your information?? Cheviot Hills is not a fictional town, it's a neighborhood of Los Angeles. (It's next to Santa Monica, where Three's Company was set.) Audra Lindley was never on 'Knots Landing'; but she was on 'Friends' as Phoebe's grandmother.

I was around 12 when this show was originally on and I remember not liking it because it wasn't Three's Company. Now that I'm older and it's syndicated again I think it's a very well written show that totally stands on its own. Some Ropers episodes are much funnier than the later Three's Company ones. It's definitely funnier than 90% of today's sitcoms.

Wrong. The episode had nothing to do with the show going off the air. Sagging ratings is what caused the show to tank, and ABC balked at giving Fell and Lindley a new show that had any resemblance to their previous shows. Nice theatrics Tim, but far from the truth.
@MrHootiedean
@MrHootiedean 28 күн бұрын
What are you on about? He said the show ended because of the lack of the og trio, a competitive time slot and new trends in sitcoms. He never said there was a specific episode. Sounds like you just wanted to rush to complain and call someone out when in actuality you've only proven you can't comprehend.
@allan9603
@allan9603 28 күн бұрын
@@MrHootiedean Obviously you have problems comprehending. The Ropers didn't "officially end" after something went "Horribly Wrong" as the headline reads. Ending the show was talked about the season before it ended, as Fell would later tell NPR. So MrHootOwl or whatever your name is, expand your knowledge base before you throw in your baseless comments. End of discussion.

@allan9603
@allan9603 26 күн бұрын
@@cindysmith2858 Yes that as well. However, the final episode described here was filmed prior to any decions were made to end the series, and therefore had nothing to do anything going "Horribly wrong " as it's depicted here. Not sure if the narrator Tim Blane has his own researchers, or if he or someone else puts together these videos, but often times theatrics are used a little too much, distorting the "True Facts".
