I've always felt part of Disney's toy problem was oversaturation of the market. They can't just make one action figure of a character, they need 3 versions in 6 different sizes. Instead of one coloring book, lets make 10 plus 6 painting sets and 6 sticker books. I worked with collectables and saw this same problem when Disney teamed up with Precious Moments. What started with one Cinderella figurine soon became 5 different yet very similar figurines that no one wanted.

They probably never did any market research and just expect kid to like and buys these horrible figure. Like did they not play tested them beforehand to make sure at least 3 out 10 kid want to play with them? Also the figure is unimaginative at best, like as a kid i probably would not want to play with any of these figure since they focus too much on the character race and gender which then limit the market.

Parents don't buy action figures for their kids anymore. The action figure market is pretty much for adult collectors now. Kids gave up on this stuff decades ago and are into video games and other electronics. A minority of children buy these action figures and playsets. Also, no matter what age you're speaking of, the consumers have to actually LIKE the movies and TV shows this merchandise is based on to spend extra money on REMINDERS of those TV shows and movies. But from a toy collector's perspective, all that crap clogging the shelves means we never or hardly ever see the stuff we want, and yeah the internet exists but when Hasbro or another company signs an exclusive deal with a retailer and the customer never sees the product because the stores won't order it because old product is clogging the shelves, then we get less figures each time. Disney isn't directly impacted by unsold toys, since they simply license the characters, names, properties, and franchises to third-party toy manufacturers. The toy manufacturers, in turn, aren't directly affected by unsold toys, since they were all bought by retailers. It's the retailers who eventually mark them as unsold and destroyed for the tax write-off. It isn't until retailers stop buying Disney-branded toys from the manufacturers that the manufacturers will stop licensing the IP from Disney, at which point Disney will finally get the hint that they need to tell better stories.

I mean there is one upside to all of this. If Disney tanks Star Wars hard enough, maybe George Lucas will be able to buy it back for pennies on the dollar, having made billions upfront from the Disney sale, and no longer simply just the original Star Wars creator, but the hero who returned when he was needed most to rescue the franchise. I mean he still has the three sequel scripts he wrote up too, right? Should be pretty easy for a master like him to rework and update them so half the work of three new films would already be done. lol

One thing I’ve noticed with modern Star Wars toys is a lot of them feel cheap and like a big step backwards from where they had been not long before the Disney buyout. I hung on to a decent amount of my childhood Star Wars figures that survived and for the like seven bucks they used to be and the size they look good and are pretty well made. Most have really detailed sculpts, nice paint application, like 14 plus points of articulation, and you had a crazy amount of variety not like less then ten characters copy pasted over and over. I remember my last bit of actually being into collecting the figures the vintage collection started with all these hyper detailed figures that looked so good. Now it’s all five points of articulation and solid one color unpainted lightsabers. I wouldn’t want that crap as a kid or a collector.

Yeah some of these toys do look like, someone held up a lighter to it and melted them slightly That or someone did a cheap paint job, that made the whole thing worst. If it doesn't look just plain unappealing. Like heck even if you somehow got me to care about Rey. I wouldn't buy her toys. Like one is just her wearing some sort of rain cloak. She doesn't look ready for action or above to make some sort of epic reveal she the big bad hero in town. More like she ate to much dinner last night and is lucky to not pass out from overeating. For a fair few of these toys, seem like they should of been thrown out, due to failing quality control. Rather than being the standard.

Firstly, all three of the Disney mainline movies are in the top twenty of the highest-grossing movies of all time. As we learned from Michael Bay, artistic quality has precious little to do with revenues. Secondly, Disney does not make merch. For instance, the Black Panther stuff and the vintage Kenner figures are made by Hasbro. Hasbro pays Disney for the rights to use the characters for the merch. Disney makes money regardless of whether they get sold or rot on the shelf. Star Wars is only a dead franchise in the minds of the internet crowd. The average person doesn't care about lore, "the message", or any of that other crap that people around here think is so important. They just paid Disney a quarter-billion dollars to see the latest live action remake.

The problem is not just that Disney is failing to make movies with broad public appeal, it is that for every one of these movies Disney is flooding the market with poor quality, gimmicky, novelty products that few people would ever buy even under the best of circumstances. The end result is that for each franchise the overall brand is cheapened and made even less enticing to purchase by potential consumers. Disney is perpetually incapable of being able to see beyond its insatiable avarice the simple fact that when it comes to merchandising, less is often more, and quality - - not quantity - - should be a primary consideration.

Their problem is that they don't understand that it doesn't matter if the character is cool, if the toy is not, they will not buy it. My little cousin never watched Aquaman, but the moment he saw the black manta toy figure, he wanted it, because he thought it looked cool.

It's a testament actually to Rebels being a much higher quality and well-liked series that there is ONLY one Ezra Bridger with speeder box set compared to dozens of Reys, Kylos, Wakanda this-and-that, Flash, etc., etc.

They made so many Wakanda forever toys I think they thought every black kid in America was going to buy one set to rock and one set to stock. lol.

In latin america, the only Disney items that are selling well (since ever) are the classic stuff (everything before 1999). In the other hand we had entire shelves of new items that nobody looks at, for example the eternals toys, chang shi, starwars, nothing off that move.

Usually when people say you couldn't give something away for free it's an exaggeration. In this case however it's literally true. People wouldn't take this stuff it it were totally free.
