During WW1 as a beautiful young and lively girl of 14 Queen Elizabeth helped wounded Tommies including Canadian troops at her family home in Scotland. They loved her. A wounded soldier wrote in her autograph book "she should be hung, drawn and quartered....hung in diamonds, drawn in a coach and 4 horses and quartered in the finest home in the land". When The King and Queen visited Canada after their historic visit to America in 1939 just before WW2, many Canadian veterans fondly remembered her many kindnesses to them in WW1. This no doubt strengthened ties to both America and Canada with Great Britain that enabled the Allies win in the catastrophic WW2 "

@@marioescalante4401 you're absolutely right. Hitler once called Queen Elizabeth "the most dangerous woman in Europe ". It's difficult for people nowadays to understand the impact of when The Blitz hit London during the Battle of Britain many aristocrats sent their children to Canada etc. The Queen was asked if she was going to send her daughters there as well, her famous response "the children won't leave without me, I won't leave without my husband, and he will NEVER leave" May she RIP

This visit becomes so much more monumental when one consider The King struggled with a stuuter all his life yet, not once, in all his speeches, can it be detected. The dedication to the cause cannot be understated. This is a historical event which should not be forgotten.

Indeed, “wonderful footage” to which I gladly say “Amen”.... Looking back, one’s heart and sentiment can only stand in awe and admiration at the people of Canada in their welcome to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth; and certainly not least of all in our feelings, in heart, of King George’s noble effort of speech and personal will to take on duties that had he any real option he would have readily declined. All honour then to his memory, and of course, to Queen Elizabeth for her equally noble support and assistance to him. As a quite different observation, at 12:15 there are two Royal Canadian Police officers ( or perhaps Army officers?) standing together and I notice their shoulder belt-straps have been put on different shoulders ie one using his left shoulder and one using his right shoulder. This does surprise me somewhat as I would have thought there would have been a more formal ruling to conform to uniformity...albeit that it would not be unreasonable to allow for “left-handers” freedom of choice given that the purpose of the shoulder strap is to hold the officer’s revolver on his appropriate side and, save correction, I presume this must be the reason.

As an American a couple of points should have been driven home to the American public in 1939. It was pretty apparent Great Britian was in a tight spot against the rise of Hitler and Mussolini in Europe with their aggressive militaristic policies that would plunge the world into conflict. The United States had its own isolationist and pacifist elements within the country. I wish the King and Queen of England had made a much longer trip into the United States going from one end to the other from the East coast of America to Chicago across the West to Los Angeles to San Franciso to as many of the state capitols to meet governors, legislature and prominent business leaders as humanly possible. I wish FDR had been able to travel with them across the United States. But most importantly, the British King and Queen should have spent numerous days talking to Congressional leaders in a "royal lobbying campaign." I also wish that out of all this "royal lobbying" the point could have been made to American isolationists that the United States needed to join with the British, Canada and other Commonwealth countries in a strong military alliance toward defending against Axis military aggressio. All of these things were done to some degree. But the importance of the British nation and the Commonwealth nations like Canada should have been driven home to American political leaders and the American public. If war was going to come and engulf the world, the United States was much better off "going all in" for the British and Commonwealth, at least in terms of full economic mobilization for war to support Britain and Canada. The US could have rapidly built up our own Army with a modern Army Air Force and a modern two ocean Navy with carriers with a naval air corps. Ideally this should have all started in the United States in about 1937 but this was politically unworkable. However, in 1939, the United State should have went towards full mobilization economically making the engines and modern weapons of war, while mobilizing for a possible conflict. Such a full blown economic mobilization would have brought America out of the Depression completely and gotten us prepared to meet any threat in Europe or the Pacific. The calculus here is pretty simple to understand. The arithmetic of war with allies meant the United States would suffer far fewer casualties WITH ALLIES than face a global war both in Europe and the Pacific WITHOUT Allies. The latter problem of facing both a major war without allies would have meant a war lasting for perhaps a decade or longer and many millions of American deaths. It was far cheaper in American lives to go to full mobilization to keep Britian and the Commonwealth countries in the fight with supplies and weapons. The isolationists had their hearts in the right place but they lived in the wrong times. The right moral thing to do was to support England and the Commonwealth with FULL AMERICAN ECONOMIC MOBILIZATION to build all the weapons, ships, aircraft and tanks the British needed to stop fascism regardless of the costs. Later on if America was forced to go to war, we would have strong allies and an economy that was fully mobilized to outproduce the fascism guaranteeing its timely defeat.
