@flamesfromblazer William saluted at the cenotaph and other war memorials during the trip to and from Westminster Abbey because he is a member of the armed forces. Kate is not in the military so she bowed her head as a mark of respect for the dead instead.

Nearly a bit of a nasty incident as they entered HorseGuards Parade? entrance with that Guardsman's horse backing out of its box and nearly into the carriage . . Lucky . . . . !

Respect for either a Royal salute by a band, a standard, which is consecrated, or when they were passing the Cenotaph, which is a national war memorial.
