I was 13 years old when England won the world cup. Before that, Rugby at least to me was always this sort of middle/upper class sport which was exclusive to them. When England won, suddenly it was open to everyone. It didn't matter where you came from, anything was possible and it's down to England winning the world cup that people thought that way. I joined my local rugby club (Broad Street Rugby Club in Coventry) and enjoyed a wonderful 5+ years playing the sport, learning how to operate in a team, understanding comradery and teamship and my responsibilities as a second row and took from the sport life lessons which I still apply to day to day life to this day. Thank you England Rugby World Cup team 2003 for creating a completely unexpected and incredible new avenue in my life. Kevin Donnelly

Kevin Donnelly I've had the pleasure of playing against Broad St on many occasions - we might've met on the pitch! particularly as we're similar aged. the RWC win absolutely inspired many of today's youth to ditch the round ball and pick up the egg.

I also was 13. My story is similar to yours and I remember going with my dad and brother to ‘see the trophy’ at a local club. It arrived on a helicopter, I wore my England shirt, and my father told me not to smile too much in the photo we had as I had braces at the time! Lol I still have that picture now, and my braces are still obvious because I couldn’t help but pull a big cheesy grin. Great memories and I quite agree thank you England!!

You guys (the French) were the only team that beat us more than once in the 4 year period between the 99 WC final finishing and the 2003 WC final. You guys had such an under rated side because they were overshadowed by the winning machine that England were back then. De Villiers, Ibanez, Pelous, Betsen, Magne, Harinodiquy, Galthie and so on. There was a fantastic 6 nations match in Paris where Serge Betsen marked Jonny Wilkinson out of the match. As well as that the French beat us in a pre World Cup friendly in a match that seemed to have no significance at all but actually was massively significant to the record books. Had England won that game then England would have held the record for most consecutive wins by a hell of a long way. Either side of that loss they had two enormously long runs without defeat.

The reason why Southern hemisphere teams are successful is purely down to not sticking to 1 style, Playing mind games, and bending the rules to borderline cheating. Biggest mistake from Northern Hemisphere teams is trying to play southern Hemisphere teams style and game instead of doing what ever it takes to win regardless of opinion . This England team did whatever it took to win and that's the difference. Both France and Ireland have a chance to shine this year. Hopefully they will play their best game and break this southern Hemisphere domination

England were shit hot then man, let's be honest mate. I'm a full Welshman myself. The fitness, philosophy of Sir Clive and Johnson, handling of criticism, strength and the plan worked for them then. That front pack was monstrous and the boot of Wilkinson was deadly. It might hurt to say, but essentially that side is the best rugby side ever to date, that English side from 2001-03. They're not as arrogant as us other nations think, just hungry for success after 1991.

John Williams great comment, the Welsh team of the 70s had the same huge influence. Shame that was the last game together, Johnson retired along with others and all of a sudden England seemed to be back to square one. I like much about the current side, but you genuinely felt that 2003 side could win whatever the opposition, whatever the conditions. This was exemplified in NZ when they held the ABs out with 13 men and went on to win.There performances seemed to be mainly built on forward power, great defence and the boot of JW. Yes they had good attackers, but they defended with their lives, with gruesome forward power with the likes of Johnson and Grewcock.

The GREATEST achievement EVER by ANY England team in any sport. I remember we went and played the "Bad Guys" , all of them, prior to the world cup as a way of saying...this is us now...we can and will beat you. Here...Take this. Then, the physical asspect is immense...Rugby is like 15 a-side boxing. Physically demanding, no hiding, hurting...yet mentally draining. In these circumstances, this was an awesome example of the best of human nature. Still choke up watching it 20 years on.

People said about England in 2003 that they didn't play pretty Rugby, but they played winning Rugby. In 2015 we turned down the options of pretty Rugby and instead chose losing Rugby. I feel like the media pressure has been unfair towards England but some of the selection has been frankly appalling.

I feel we lost due to team selection and Lancaster's policies. He led the team like a Sunday League team. Blocking out Tualangi, not choosing to overthrow the foreign players rule. He left out Ford who played astonishingly well in the build up and against Fiji. It blows my mind some of the choices he made.

Bok fan here. In 2007, glimpses of this 2003 team appeared in 2007, but they were just not good enough when it mattered the most. What should sting the most was the 2019 loss. England was primed to dominate had they won that final against South Africa. But they were spent by that point following a monumental win against the All Blacks.

+Roshan Singh yes amazing talent coming through atm for England, but still I fear that structure of English rugby is not set up to give the international team the best chance to win another RWC. I watch the skill level of the ABs and their super rugby teams and it is on a completely different level to NH, let alone English rugby. But I can certainly see England getting back into the top 3 come RWC 2019.
@roshansingh8040
@roshansingh8040 8 жыл бұрын
Peter Leung I definitely agree with your sentiment. I thought Lancaster did a lot of good in his tenure by trying to force England to play a more open/threatening style, but ultimately it is to no avail if the premiership is far more attritional. maybe it is in the english psyche to play the forward dominated game, just like the long ball tactic in football. however i believe if the jones selectively choose players who showcase the ability to play the faster game, we can be world class. I hope i don't appear delusional but i think we could have the best cluster of centres in the world with henry ford, tuilagi, Joseph and Daly. Their skills and abilities are on par with any other current international centres.

A long time after your comment, but in many ways you’re right. Woodward did some great things, but he was blessed with having some incredible players. The legacy he left was poor and player development had been ignored in the effort to achieve what they did. He was too English for a Lions tour, selected English players who were past their best and unfortunately came up against probably the greatest rugby team ever. Don’t forget how good that ABs team were and Carter was totally in his pomp during that tour. So yes and no.

Of course it helped to have some of the finest players ever to represent England.... but maybe he made them. Typical RFU to get rid of him.

I was at that 2003 England Samoa RWC match. It was hilarious for 3/4 of match they looked like they’d lose. They proved were NOT a great team that day.

I agree England played poorly and Samoa played out of their skins, but isn't that the test of a truly great team though, that they can have an off day and then come back, This was the best Rugby team England have ever had in my opinion and for a year or so they were the best team in the world, and consistently beat the southern hemisphere teams. Credit where it is due, Wilkinson was in a class of his own and the best kicker in the world and so young as well during the 2002,2003 season to have performed so well at his young age was a blessing to the team and he changed games. The current squad are also blessed to have 3 Islanders playing for them, Islanders are truly great athletes and so strong and they have helped shaped the current team into a real force, probably not good enough to beat NZ, but there is no shame losing to the best team in the world, I just hope England give a good account of themselves and give it all they have and it will be a good game.

great theatre... interesting clive tips his hand in the documentary.... they man marked Larkham in the final, who was belted in a ruck,... nearly unconscious and went to the blood bin to be "stiched" and sent back in... that was the turning point imo... australia's (and arguably worlds best player) taken out... fair play?

An unwritten rule in rugby is, 'if the ref didn't see it, it didn't happen'. There's also the phrase (which applies to more than one aspect of a match), 'if it wasn't given, it didn't count'. The Larkham incident in itself is down to meticulous planning and strategy. You don't have to like it, you don't even have to respect it but you do need to accept it. In response to a previous comment about SA already doing it (the whole extra-time, drop goal thing), they did it in their own back yard. (NB: I absolutely loved the romance of the '95 RWC) England however went to Australia's backyard, took their trophy off them and flew home with it. RWC 2003 was the best final in sports history. (Closely followed by Liverpool's UCL of 2005 and Dennis Taylor's win in 1985).

+Aaron Beschizza RWC 2003 Final was a great game,but not the best.That honor now belongs to RWC 2015 and the epic final between the mighty All Blacks and a great attacking side in Australia.Our All Blacks proved they're the greatest by winning in 2011,then going to England and winning the RWC again.Plus taking the RWC in 1987.

+BroncosFan1990 that is a fair comment. The ABs were sensational in the final. For drama though, the '03 final was incredible. It may be a biased view as I'm English and Jonny is my hero, but even still, it was the greatest. For pure entertainment and a virtuoso display of how a team just romped a final, NZ take the crown. I guess the debate would go on and on so I'm just glad I've lived through that era and witnessed both finals.

Aaron Beschizza our win in 2011 was special but winning the RWC in England was better.The tournament was awesome with great crowds and full stadiums and you English fans/supporters were superb hosts even after your team bowed out early.Plus to top it all off the All Blacks won it again and hammered the French on the way to doing it:)

+BroncosFan1990 hammering the French is always something I love to see! It was a good World Cup and our pool was tough to get out of. it was nice to see the ABs handle the enormous pressure put on them. we all know they've been prone to cracking when in a tournament held anywhere other than NZ. Japan 2019 will be interesting!

FlyingG Sports incorrect, Clive was in charge in 2014 his favorite points conceded was 36 that year.Then he lost badly again with the Lions in NZ in 2015. His team was very good in 2002/3, he wasn’t a great coach without those retired players. He was big headed after 2003 and got found out. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_rugby_union_matches_between_England_and_New_Zealand#Summary en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Woodward

Kinjal Vyas to be honest..... the current England team has more depth than the World Cup winners of 2003.... However they may have inspired more children to take up Rugby Union than Football (Soccer) when they won it..... A lot of credit should also go to Stuart Lancaster (Eddie Jones predecessor) for developing the talents that Eddie now has at his disposal.... They could win the Grand Slam and the World Record of 19 victories but without the All Black's as a scalp would lessen the achievement for me...
