I'm a rugby union player and come to learn league. Thanks for the rules Ninh Ly! I can also see a lot of segregation between League and Union. To be honest, both are rugby and are both great sports. League is pretty popular in Australia (State of Origin, Australia considered the best at international...).

To both brisbane and wigan the grand final was there for you both , brisbane were far too conservative in the last 20 mins and should have went for the killer try , as for wigan taking the 2 points turned out to be a big mistake should have risked it and when for the try , however I think both of your teams are up an coming and should see them back next year

I can't believe it's been 10 years since we last won. Brisbane is a big club and deserves better imo. Hopefully, with the games overseas, the club can become fairly well known though :)
@NinhLyUK

Matthew Boyle At the time, the two points made sense. In retrospect, it doesn't. But the biggest game killer for us was Matty Smith dropping the ball immediately after we scored the opener to give them the levelling try. I'm still convinced that their second try wasn't a try. But you have to hand it to them. They were the better team on the day overall, with better ball movement, less errors, creating more chances etc.

I have used rugby league here in America to turn gridiron fans into Rugby watchers! One fella said he didn't like the game until I showed him League and explained its closeness to gridiron, and he fell in love with the sport. After that, introducing union to him was a piece of cake, (and showing him his first union match as being the '73 Barbarians vs All Blacks game helped a lot!) Therefore, you want to get Americans into Rugby, teach them about League, and maybe we can get something going over here!

+Alfred M Actually touch rugby is not the same, it's a sort of rugby with rugby union rules as regards scoring and stuff, but you are not allowed to tackle as in rugby league or union. That's why there's no rucks or mauls in touch rugby as there are in union (at least the touch rugby I used to play in school. Since we were kids they limited the contact in the sport).

That's Super Legue in the video, club Rugby League over in England. But the rules are pretty much the same in other countries like Aus and France. Some additional rules. The ball can float forward but it has to go backwards out of the hands. You can also strip the ball if you're in a one on one tackle. If you kick the ball past the opponent's in goal the other team starts from their 20 metre line and gets an extra tackle. You can lift players in tackles but their body has to be horizontal or less than that. Any closer and you risk them landing on their neck and you get penalised. Instead of draft picks there's a salary cap on all clubs. If an offside player tackles the opponent before their team is back onside it's a professional foul and they get a 10 minute sin bin. (In Australian club League, which is the NRL) Kicking out on the full means they the other team gets the ball right from you kicked it.

I think every Rugby League fan agrees. Either make it relevant or remove it in favour of a tap restart.
@sakr-el-bahr272
@sakr-el-bahr272 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree. The modern rugby league scrum retains ties to the tradition of playing the game. They were revised to make them cleaner to restart play. Also redeveloped due to the amount of injuries to players because of collapsed scums and also how sloppy and uncontrollable they were during the scrum feed. They are an alternative to a tap restart and can provide backlines with an opportunity to execute set plays. Also offers variation to just a tap restart which could become boring, repetitive and tiresome.

I used to be a person that disliked how Rugby League works due to their uncontested tackles and how the scrum works... To this day I still find fact that they stand in formation and roll the ball through them kinda silly. But what got me to have more respect for the game is how much more simple the game is and how much more faster the gameplay is.

As someone who grew up playing American Football , I do appreciate this much grittier style of Rugby. But it can get annoying with refs sometimes - can get way too technical… I was watching the AFL - and I much prefer that style of Rugby. on a huge (cricket) pitch , which is more similar to traditional football (soccer). I like aspects of both . Personally, I would take the best of the two styles -it would be a perfect blend..

To be honest, I love both types of Rugby, but I think I like League a bit more. It's faster, stronger, tougher, easier to play (funner), and a not bunch of perks to it. So to all the Unioners who wish to be snobby, weak up, because League gives Union a run for it's money. I also wish Aussie was more popular. It's sad how the most boring sports are considered the "world sports", rather than the funnest ones which are less popular. The world sports should be American Football, Aussie Rules, Gaelic Football, Hurling, and Baseball. I also wish League was the more favorited one. It's rather stupid how soccer, cricket, tennis, gold, and land hockey are the most popular. This is coming from an Irishman, lads. I like Union too, though. No offense from earlier.

Fun Fact: The normal, improvised running of the ball in rugby with the added stipulation that you can only pass it backward or sideways has a smaller equivalent in American Football, but with a difference. It's called the Lateral play, and just like Rugby it is not executed by design. It is a split-second decision by the ball carrier at any given moment while a play is being run to abandon the playcall and go for broke with the Lateral to another player behind or alongside him. Unlike Rugby, it is usually only done at the end of the 1st half or end of the game as a last ditch effort to score a game-winner, therefore it is usually one long play. Because of the way a Lateral is used in games, being tackled during it rather than scoring is considered a failure. It is a low-percentage move, has a low-probability of success. In the film "The Longest Yard" with Adam Sandler, the Lateral is referred to as "Schoolyard Bullshit" because of its freestyle nature appealing to kids just playing American football without any rules growing up. I guess Americans technically could pick up Rugby rules rather seamlessly. The Lateral during real games (both successes and failures): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7KHgrJ5uqqRYmw.html The Lateral in "The Longest Yard," skip to 0:40 for the scene: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f7uUY6t7y5ewmIE.html

Usually when the other team commits a penalty, and the team with the ball gets another set of six. You can take less than 6 tackles if you want to, but your positional play has to be good in order to limit the damage from the other team. Hope that helps?

In Australian NRL rules you get a seven tackle set when the other team kicks it out past the field of play or if a player catches a kick from another team in his try zone, the seven tackle set will start at the 20 metre line, I think when they introduced this it added a big element of tactics not seen before and now kicking has been much more important.

Those two players do not retreat. As mentioned in the video, once the ball carrrier is tackled, he must stop and play the ball back to a teammate. +Ninh Ly I notice from the latest Rugby World Cup that Union have fiddled with the laws around the breakdown so that the attacking side is pretty much guaranteed possession after a tackle unless they do something really stupid. Thus encouraging more running, at the cost of giving teams almost interminable sequences of possession , particularly when they're near the tryline. Next they'll introduce a tackle limit to fix this problem, along with the National Rugby Championship trial rules that give 5 points for a try, 3 points for a conversion, and two points for penalty or field goal, and thus complete the transition to a game that's virtually rugby league.
@NinhLyUK

cygil1 It's interesting isn't it? How both codes are evolving, and one could argue that Union is trying to be more like League. Some would argue that this isn't the case, but I've noticed rules changes on both sides that seem familiar to the other code. I don't foresee there ever being a compromise or a joining of the two codes to form one, but it's food for thought for sure. Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

Hi Ninh, I've just discovered and enjoy your various videos. But just one correction on the distance that a conversion kick (in both codes of rugby) is taken, is not 20 m out from the goal line but as far back as the kicker deems necessary for him to be able to effect a conversion. You might also have added that the kick is taken from a spot which is in a line drawn perpendicular to the goal line and at the distance in from the touch line where the ball was grounded.

Technically you CAN push in the scrums in the Rugby League but nowadays no one does that, because in Rugby League the ball is fed into a tunnel and rolled straight to the back of the scrum so that the team awarded a scrum can get the ball possession easily.

@NinhLyUK 9 жыл бұрын
Wolfe Tone1798 Hi. Thanks very much for the comment on my video. To answer your question: there is a difference to the balls used by each sport ... but not by much. A Rugby Union ball can be 28cm - 30cm long with a 58cm - 62cm circumference, and the most popular ones are made by Gilbert - who have the iconic 4 point design. A Rugby League ball is exactly 27 cm long and 60cm in circumference, and the most popular brands are made by Steeden and Rhino, both have varying designs that make the ball LOOK different, but are largely the same. To be honest, if you blindfolded a rugby player and asked which one was a League ball and which was a Union ball, I doubt they would guess which is which. Hope that helps? It always looks like nobody is really moving but they are still pushing down on the ball carrier. Can someone explain that to me?
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you have to make sure that the referee knows that you have tackled the ball carrier. Merely bringing him to the ground does not count as a tackle, you also have to impede forward motion. Once the referee has indicated so, you can stop the tackle and release your opponent.

It's in the attackers best interest to get up and play the ball as quickly as possible to catch the defence out of position. For the defence it's in their best interest to slow the attacker down and keep him on the floor as long as possible so their defensive line gets set. The ref will say move to the defender when he's got to get up and allow the attacker up, if he takes too long it will be a penalty to the attacker.

@Warren552011 That's not a penalty try. A penalty try is worth 4 points, followed by a conversion kick from in front of the posts. This only happens when a try _isn't_ scored, but it would have been scored if not for foul play. When a try _is_ scored, _and_ there is foul play, the try is worth 4, the conversion is in line with the spot of the try, and then there is a penalty from in front of the posts. This is referred to as an 8 point try if both kicks are successful, or a possible 8 point try. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q6uCpJZ4v7vUg6s.html

@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 5 жыл бұрын
That is one of the downsides to the scrum yes. Unlike in Rugby Union where the rulebook specifically states that the ball must be rolled down the middle between the two packs of players, in League there is no such requirement. This results in League scrums being almost useless, and the opposing teams know this, so they don't even try and contest for the ball.
