Using contrasting thread colors to mimic the subtle color variances along the body of a natural chironomid pupa is a popular technique. Good friend Trevor Tatarczuk is a master of this technique and chironomid tying in general. Trevor's chironomid pupa are works of art that look almost too good to fish. He is an innovative fly tyer everyone should pay attention to.
This past fall (2020) while fishing with Trevor in the Cariboo region of British Columbia I managed to sit down with Trevor to film him tying the Rusty Duck one of his less complex blended body chironomid pupa patterns.

I use a Regal vise myself. I believe Trevor was using a Peak vise in this video. Cheers, Phil

Thankyou for the reply.I was asking more specifically when Trevor was tying the pupa with the peak midge jaws what would be the largest hook those jaws could handle.Granted certain hook manufactures hook diameters run differently.Thankyou.

Hi Dan, I have tied up to size 6 streamer 2XH 3XL hook without any issues. I'm sure you could go a bit bigger, but I wouldn't. The key when using bigger hooks in the midge jaws is to place it further back in the jaws so you are not putting a lot of pressure on the tips. Hope this answers your question. Trevor

No there has always been access to the lakes on the ranch.

Hi Lawrence, you are correct simple is often just as good or in some instances better. There are a lot of chironomid tyers who really enjoy putting in subtle details. I have been known to do that from time to time. I am not always convinced the fish see or notice them but if it becomes a source of confidence for the fly tyer they probably believe in their patterns and consequently fish them better. I still come back to the point that if fish can see all of the details we put in flies how come they consistently don't notice the hook? 😀: Cheers, Phil
