The science of evolution has caused friction for many Christians. And science does pose some challenges to the way people have been taught to think about their faith, but those challenges don’t have to lead to a decision to reject faith-or to reject the findings of science. In fact, understanding science can lead to a deeper faith.
Jim Stump, host of Language of God has a new book coming out-The Sacred Chain: How Understanding Evolution Leads to a Deeper Faith. The book explores several challenges posed by science and how they might be resolved. This podcast series Jim walks through three of the challenges.
The challenge of the Bible asks how we can continue to affirm the Bible as inspired and authoritative if the human authors believed incorrect things about the world. Did God correct their cultural-bound beliefs, or work through them, as God has always worked with imperfect people?
Richard Middleton joins Jim for the second part of this episode to talk about biblical inspiration from the perspective of a bible scholar, and the episode features clips from a previous episode with Philip Yancey.
This is the first of a three part mini-series.

These sound like arguments from someone who is deconstructing. You are making very good points. Many believers get extremely uneasy with these kinds of comments. On the other hand, I do believe it is extremely important to bring them up. The sign that your faith has matured is when you can hold these questions loosely in your hand, while still holding onto the essentials

Universal Common Descent is the easiest myth to debunk in modern "science". It survives purely off of the necessity for an atheistic explanation of life. The theory, when criticized, is utter nonsense, especially when you also study abiogenesis (or the lack thereof). I've found that pretty much the only reason most people believe it is because everyone else does, it's confirmation bias to the max.

I wrote ten books on the fractal structure of the Bible. My research is revolutionary in Bible interpretation history.

Thanks for a lot for this discussion. I generally agreed with the overall thrust of the discussion. A possible tweak for your consideration: There are some places in Scripture where God is specified as saying some words to Moses, etc. Plus of course, there are all the words recorded as being what Yeshua said. And I know at times, it is not clear where the quotation ends. My point is there are some parts of the text where the claim seems to be stronger than some bottom up inspiration, as those examples seem to me to be top down.

Thanks. A possible tweak to your tweak: there are places in Scripture where the author claims it is God who said something. That is a little different than God actually saying something. The classic example of this is whether it is God who told David to take a census (2 Sam 24) or Satan who told David to take a census (1 Chron. 21). That makes interpretation even more complex.

Does anybody out there have any thoughts about the Jesus/Legion story where Jesus sent the demons into 2000ish pigs? I have never heard a good take on it (I have heard takes, but never a good one... Most come up empty and small). I mean, did Jesus not care about those sentient beings that have the ability to feel pain and suffer (an ability that God put in them!!!)? It is like God is saying, "OK, I created all 2000 of you with the ability to suffer and feel pain... Now I will inflict suffering on you by my actions! Bwahahahaha (evil laugh)!" It just doesn't come off as "Thy Kingdom come" or "wolf will live with the lamb" like. Something seems off. If you saw me drowning 2000 puppies (You can't say puppies are much different than pigs... Sorry, both are equally sentient!), I would have the law called on me and be put in prison, and rightly so! If I just stood by and allowed it, that would be seen as awful too. Again, rightly so!! So, is God love in a holistic sense or not? Does God love, REALLY LOVE, the planet, the nonhumans, and the humans, the whole of the Universe or not? Anything less than this does not seem like actual real feet on the ground good news to me at all. True love, that which God supposedly is, it seems to me, either includes it all or it fails. Love, in the deepest God-like sense, is holistic or it is not. God is love all the time in everything or he is not, and if he is not, is he actually love at all (I am talking in the deepest holistic sense here)?

I walked away from Christianity years ago because of all the ridiculous jumping through hoops people did with the Bible. I just couldn't be part of it anymore. I saw the nonsense clear as day. Recently, I have started to ask, is there a different way to approach all of this, a way that actually makes sense? I am now looking into what the Bible actually is, how it should be approached. I absolutely refuse to be part of any group that sees certain questions as "too sacred to be asked about".
