Stats:
156 singers
US - 29 states + DC
CANADA - 5 Provinces
WORLD - 13 countries
Poetry from video:
And let this feeble body fail,
And let it faint or die;
My soul shall quit this mournful vale,
And soar to worlds on high,
Chorus:
And I’ll sing hallelujah,
And you’ll sing hallelujah,
And we’ll all sing hallelujah,
When we arrive at home.
Give joy or grief, give ease or pain,
Take life or friends away,
But let me find them all again,
In that eternal day.
(Chorus x 2)

Beautiful! I have listened to and sung along with Sacred Harp choirs, at home for several years now. It is an extraordinary feeling that I am continuing to do the same thing with others who are singing, perhaps in isolation, just like me. I love singing along with your conventions and it has brought me a lot of joy in the past and will continue to do so. Nothing that is done for the glory of God is done in vain. God bless you all.

So having this land in my in-box has been just the ticket I need to straighten my shoulders and ride out this storm, singing as I go! I've got nothing but love for any folks who have similarly cobbled together a remote music making experience. AND, I have not found anything nearly as soul stirring (though gorgeous and moving at times, for sure!) I love that we are not the Brady Bunch, if you catch my drift (just look at the thumbnails!) Something to do with each of us in particular, something to do with the editing, a lot to do with "the music itself," but overwhelmingly about a whole different orientation and sense of purpose- what music is or can be, and what we can accomplish by doing it together, with all our particularities. Just an observation with a little preaching to the choir. Haha!

Haha, not the Brady Bunch indeed! Yes, I'm proud to be a little bit weird and to be part of many cool musical endeavours with other folks who are likewise a little bit weird. By the way Tim, I've long admired your music and hope to meet you one day. I'm an ethnomusicologist who studies the Republic of Georgia and Eastern Europe (did a Ph.D. in Illinois alongside Jonathon Smith, who got me into Sacred Harp), and "Balkan Fascination" is one of my favourite books.

my understanding is that this didn't happen live but everyone recorded their parts individually and sent them to someone who edited this together
@jacobeiserman
@jacobeiserman 4 жыл бұрын
That's right--these parts were all recorded separately, while listening to a 4-part master track, and then edited together later. I've been a part of other online singing groups in the past 2 weeks and so far there isn't really a good solution for simultaneous sound. Programs which are meant for conference calling (like Zoom) usually default to whoever is loudest rather than putting sound from all participants through simultaneously--there can perhaps be two or three simultaneous sounds, but it gets trickier with larger groups. Even with small groups there is the issue of latency/delay, which seems kind of insurmountable. But I'm sure there are a lot of musical tech wizards who are working on this with a new kind of urgency these days. The best options right now are individual recording and mixing into a whole like this, or for a slightly more interactive experience on a conference call, you can mute all of the callers except for one. The others can sing along while listening to the unmuted performer. This works even better if there are two or more people calling from the unmuted device, since they can fill in more of the parts. If anyone's got a full (and capable) SATB quartet living in their house right now, I envy you!
