The Baltimore Ravens are always doing promotional things and Honors for their Former star players. The Ring of Honor, each home game there’s a former star that leads the team out on the field before the game. Half time honors and I’m not talking just about Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. I’m talking Haloti Ngata, Matt Stover, Jamal Lewis etc. Ravens have only been around since 96’ but they do a great job honoring past players.

Eagles are like that too. Im always seeing players I grew up watching getting honored by the team and then being involved somehow with current regimes and coaches and new players. Obviously its a business and guys age out n retire or get traded at the end of their career so you gotta bring in new blood to continue to have a good team but you cant sit there and erase history especially players who brought you success and was always loyal.

Major universities do a great job of honoring tradition and past players/coaches, etc; it's a huge part of fundraising from alumni; UNC for one does an amazing job; it's a huge driver of team apparel as well. The college teams that do the best job with preserving tradition are most often leaders in team merchandise as well. It's also a huge billboard for recruiting, which begats more wins. Colleges that ignore their past glory do so at their peril.

This is exactly why being a Pittsburgh Steeler fan is the greatest. The standard is the standard, going all the way back to Mean Joe. Those names and legacies from 50 fuckin years ago will never be forgotten in Steeler culture... Chuck Knoll Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Joe Greene, Mike Webster, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham, Mel Blount. And they didn't stop there.. Bill Cowher, Troy Polamalu, James Harrison, Kevin Greene, Larry Foote Brett Kiesel, James Farrior Joey Porter, Heath Miller, Jerome Bettis, Casey Hampton Alan Faneca, Hines Ward, Bryant McFadden, Ike Taylor, Ryan Shazier... just to name a few. The Rooney family has curated a culture and legacy that cannot be understated and I believe was epitomized by Ben's farewell. I really can't describe the pride I take in being a Pittsburgh Steeler fan.
@johnnyrivers8110
@johnnyrivers8110 Жыл бұрын
I am a diehard Cheesehead, but I agree with you. The Steelers are much better about showing appreciation for their legacy players. It's an embarrassment that Rodgers wasn't given the same amount of respect Ben was when Ben couldn't even throw a ball his last season. He got that moment to say goodbye on primetime TV to the fans he played his ass off for. The Packers traded up in the first round trying to replace Rodgers after signing him to an extension and making it to the NFCCG.

Green bay is so entrenched in history it will never "new team" the building. The history if you ever do a tour is insane. There is about a 15 ft long by about 4 ft wide section of bricks in the packs walk out tunnel that is from the original tunnel of the first actual stadium. Theres shrines of the old guys everywhere. The press section is very old school style. Hell the stadium itself still has bench seating through most the stands and one of the huge bath rooms is a massive troft the guys piss in. So its very much history based.

@kennymorelandiii9406

This is true but also at a certain point not completely. Maybe you have different ownership and everyone in the building/stadium has been replaced a dozen or so times (looking at you the Washington Derrrrs) Also if the team moves I think you lose some history. For example sticking with Washington when they played at RFK in DC even though the place was falling apart that stadium had some incredible history and felt like home and felt like Washington had a home field advantage in a way. Once Jack Kent Cooke passed and Daniel Snyder bought the team and moved to bumfuck Landover Maryland( I think this was actually JKC's doing so can't blame POS Danny) this team immediately felt different to me. At first while I was younger I didn't think Fed Ex was all that bad but then I went to other stadiums like the Ravens, Steelers and was blown away with the GameDay experience. Im high and rambling for no reason so my apologies

The part I feel sorry for the players about. At least here in australia in the NRL coaches and clubs cottonwool the players so much from 13-15 that they never grow up and become men. They have the most impressive physical attributes on earth but none of them become men, and they do it because boys to question the coach. Men will. But that kid that joins the Brisbane broncos at 14 and retired at 34. Well mentally he’s 14 and the real world hits em and the clubs aren’t interested in even talking to em. Just you’re off the books not our problem. Unless it’s an absolute legend of the team then they tend to get jobs for life in development or advertising or what ever. It’s hard to go from the NRL to real life. I imagine a similar thing happens in the nfl.

As a packer fan, the team itself feels different, but the TEAM does not. The packers are always the Packers and AJ HAWK is always going to be a Packer and a great to us. The fans are what built the packers into the team they are known as now as well. Aaron will always be a packer, just like Brett. We understand the business of the sport, especially more so now with Aaron, so that doesn’t sting like the Brett trade. Aaron has said he loves the Packers as well. I used to be a fan but couldn’t even tell you the last time I watch more than a highlight reel. Growing up I could tell you names of people in a team, but only a handful. I’m not trying to be rude. Heck, I don’t expect anyone to ever care who I am or even what I say in a comment. I can say this about WVU and most colleges for that matter… if they advertise for a specific player and they put his name on a jersey with his number, what happens when he decides to go pro at the last sec.? Or if he gets traded or injured? For them, they know the player has a shelf life. Even if he starts his first game as a freshman and plays till he graduates. It’s still a finite amount of time. These days guys don’t even bother with finishing a degree. They can do that after they make a few million and retire…for fun.. Add up how many players have gone through those locker room doors since you started playing there. Just players? How is a place suppose to stay in business with that many guys wanting to feel “special”? Now a pro that puts in a decade or more of work for that one team… yeah I guess he has some pull. But that pull is limited. But after a certain amount of time that welcome starts to run out, and that’s a guy who played with the same team from rookie to retiree. I know guys get hurt and screwed over. You have guys living off pain meds and there’s a conversation to be had about injuries a player received playing for a team, that leave them handicapped in some way and the roll an organization should have to help them. But, football is a sport that each player at that level should know comes with risks. The risk versus reward is up to each player. If a player feels like he isn’t being compensated for his risk he can bring that up, find a better deal with another team, or just quit. Unless your contract states it, you should not expect it. I signed a contract, I served 10 years. During that time I received a spine injury on the job and now I live with constant pain. They medically retired me and I became the VA’s problem. The way I got hurt was unexpected but it happens more than most know. As much as I didn’t want to leave I had no choice. My shop couldn’t expect me to just show up and hang out all day. In fact I went back to see a friend one day and I didn’t recognize anyone. Once the USAF medically retired me, my contract was void and I was no longer there problem. It stings, because you feel used. It’s hard to get past it. But it is what it is. I guess if your lucky as a player to have a long career or maybe help win a championship your able to hold onto some of that glory but only so much. At least in those cases you stamp your name in a history book. And of course all that money… setting your children up for a better life at the very least. My son will never get to see me at work or wearing my uniform. That gets to me sometimes, that and being told that because of my injuries I’m unemployable(a real classification by the VA). But I can’t stay focused on that sort of stuff. It’s not healthy. I’m surprised I never met you Pat. I partied pretty hard back home in WV. From Morgantown all the way to Clarksburg and everywhere in between before I decided to join the service. I was an OU fan though, first game I ever saw was in Okla back when the Boz was playing.

It’s literally a business with a bottom line and a budget. Teams have to dump guys that are asking for too much because winning rings and sustaining 10-15 years of success isn’t won with one guy asking for too much money. Dynasties are had and built by stacking good young cheap talent on rookie deals and then having team oriented veterans that are willing to restructure their contracts to get paid later if they have to so the team can constantly build the team. Tom Brady did it for like 10-15 years on the pats. Dude restructured his deals all the time so they could bring in guys like randy moss.

I really appreciate Pat, but if we are talking about legacies, I should be clear as a man from Baltimore: there is no such team, and there never will be such a team, as "the Indianapolis Colts". It does not exist and never has. You may call them the Indianapolis Irsays if you absolutely wish, but I certainly wouldn't wish my team to be tainted with that name.
@ItBePatYo
@ItBePatYo Жыл бұрын
They're no longer your team. They moved out of Baltimore. You don't need to worry about "your" team being tainted because they're not your team anymore. The Indianapolis Colts are definitely a team, no matter what you say. It's been almost 40 years. Let it go.

All-time leading scorer at WVU...also the guy that during the '07 Pitt game, botched two kicks from 20 and 32 yards, respectively, and cost his team a shot to play in the BCS championship.

How did the Pack abandon Rodgers? Lol they just signed him to an extension last offseason and for the past 3 years it’s been him constantly going back and forth with retirement. Just few months ago he said he was about 90% sure he was gonna retire. What are packers supposed to do?

“Abandoning” former players? The real question is for the players: What do you think the team owes you after your career? These teams are trying to move forward and win games and be successful, and that cannot be done while looking back. The former players aren’t being “abandoned”, they just can’t handle the fact that their playing days are done.

Here’s a Packers fact I bet Ty doesn’t even know, maybe AJ doesn’t. George Papa Bear Halas had to FUND the Packers back in the day so that the bears could have a rivalry. George Halas kept the Packers lights on just to go whoop on em. Without Papa Bear their is no lambeau leap, no titletown, nothing. So when you speak on Da Bears, speak with some damn respect

It goes both ways, during the Great depression the Packers lent the Bears $1500 to meet payroll. Two storied franchises with all time greats, an incredible rivalry that lasts the tale of time.
