I can think of one Trooper Caffran, the bright eyed and young Sergeant that had seen so much trying to save a child, only for his team to be ambushed. The Chaos soldier killed he turned to see the child he was trying to help which had been reduced to a near animal due to their time on Chaos held Gereon holds a discarded Las rifle. Instead of snapping or ordering the boy, he kneels down, reaches out a hand and says, "Here, put that down and give it to me," all with a smile. Before young boy shoots him in the chest. He died never knowing his Son became a Ghost, he died never having talked with Gol Kolea about their relationship and the fact his kids were now Cafs and Tonas. He died doing what had saved three people he loves then more then anything in the universe, acting out of the kindness of his heart to help another in need.

Dermon Caffran was one of the hardest deaths for me because while it was during an assault to take back a world; it wasn’t the enemy that took him from us but a scared child that just wanted to survive and it was done with the ease of breathing. It’s one reason I love the Gaunt’s Ghost series it has amazing stories of triumph and deep despairs of mourn soaked losses.

That's the kind of text that remember us why Warhammer 40000 is one of the Pilars of the grimdark. With his tendency to focus on supersoldiers who can't feel fear and extremely large scale battles, most of the time it looks more like dark space fantasy. Which isn't a criticism, 40K was originally Fantasy in space, the dark fantasy is part of its DNA. But this kind of text remi us that the essence of grimdark isn't the scale of the threat of the existence of abomination: it's tragedy to human scale - or any other sentient being like here - set in a fantasy or dystopian universe.

Tbh I don't really care that there are female custodians. Afaik the lore never explicitly stated they were exclusively guys. Meanwhile female Astartes, despite afaik having been a thing in the past(discontinued and booted from the lore early on because of bad sales iirc) would be kinda weird because the geneseed is made from the genes of the primarchs which are all dudes, thus likely rendering men more compatible with it. Tho it could still be hand waved away because if Big E can create these supersoldiers, he can also make the geneseed work regardless of sex.

I'm truly starting to believe the theory that the Emperor was intentionally self sabotaging at certain points, possibly throughout his entire campaign because there are certain choices he made that were clearly and objectively the wrong choice, and very short sighted, but he's meant to be the most farsighted (hehe) man in the galaxy! Take his treatment of Angron for example. He teleported Angron onto his ship while his brothers and sisters in atms were slaughtered, breeding resentment in Angron towards him from the very start. He could have aided Angron in the rebellion, if not personally, he could have sent one or two of the castodes he brought with him. There are so many points where he almost seemed to be working towards the heresy, not trying to prevent it. Maybe his goal was to survive and for the loyalists to win overwhelmingly, as a means of weeding out and destroying the disloyal legions and their primarchs, but with his gifts of forsight and wisdom, he would have known it would have been better to put out the flame as a spark rather than trying to extinguish it as a raging inferno. Also his decision to keep the existence of Chaos hidden just played right into the Chaos Gods' hands despite it ostensibly being to keep people safe because people would fall to Chaos without even knowing what it is or how to fortify themselves against it. He set so many people up for corruption by keeping that knowledge hidden. And a LOT of his plans ended up feeding an inconceivable amount of power to Khorne! He's a giant beacon in the warp as bright as the sun, and is the source of millenia-and-galaxy-spanning wars. That's essentially like yelling directly in Khorne's face that you've set up a bottomless buffet for him, and then being surprised that he wanted eat.

You might wonder why he would be given orders to die for seemingly no reason. But if the enemy sees a lil gob sprinting in the opposite direction of their vehicle, they might reslize it's been rigged, and escape themselves. Besides, if the ticking stops and the planter is still alive, that means it's a dud. Better have s guy there to try and fix it, or maybe catch some bullets on the way out.
