We use kindling totes inspire by yours so i thought i might share on improvement. Instead of the foam, we made what are essentially wooden bulkhead adaptors. Each one is four pieces of 1x6 with a semicircle cut out with a taper so that it fits into the grooves of the tube. The two on the inside of the box are natural, and the other two are pressure treated. The pieces on the outside are rotated 90° compared to the inside so that all four pieces are ultimately connected (using nuts, bolts, and washers). Weve used this with great success for over a year.

UPDATE_2019- We don't immediately transfer them to a nesting box anymore. If Momma decides to kindle in the cooling station we just leave them for about 2 weeks. We then put Momma doe and her litter in their new 36"x 30" grow out cage. We still put a nesting box in the cage just in case she decides to kindle in there but we haven't had a doe kindle in a nesting box in a while.

I'm hoping to see more of this set up too!! I have rabbits in cages right now but wanting them to get out of the cage.... without having to put them all on the ground! so this cage and ground set up is wonderful!! Living in Texas, they will need something to cool off during the summer, wondering if these totes in the ground will help.

May I ask how big your black tubing is? Ultimately, I like this setup and would like to mimic I think, but in the meantime, I'm looking into kindling cages with drop down nests. During winter I want to be able to drop a wooden box in there with a circular entrance to prevent kits from getting drug out on the teat (which is happening a lot for me right now with traditional boxes), but I'm finding it difficult to get a good hole diameter for a NZ/Rex size rabbit.

What happens if 1 of those baby rabbits die by accident ? Would the mommy rabbit drag it out of the nest, or will the nest get infected ? Just wondering what would happen if they were in nature.
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 4 жыл бұрын
If a baby rabbit dies it will get pushed to the bottom or outside of the cluster. You can't depend on Mama to drag a dead kit out of the litter. I check the nesting box every couple days to check for expired kits. You don't want them to stay in the nest due to the odor. It could cause all of the kits to stink like a rotting carcass.

This may be obvious but are the doe's able to move all of the hay/insulation material to feed their litter? I just followed your example and stuffed a bunch of hay and dry leaves (because I have that in bulk) in there to keep them warm. I'm hoping I don't have any losses, and I thought I was prepared but my first doe just kindled so I'm kind of panicking. First time jitters I guess!
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it will go great. I wouldn't pack it the the rim with hay or anything. I've never used leaves. I try to make sure the straw is clean. Clean as possible to prevent any extra dirt or bacteria. I put down the chip shavings to absorb and urine. 5-6" of straw. All on day 29. Mama will remove the straw if theirs too much. Keeping clean nest will help with the litter's health and preventing nestbox eye. Mama will cover them and uncover them based on heat.
@sharrielee1
@sharrielee1 5 жыл бұрын
I don't see why you don't just set it up that way to begin with if that is what you are going for, instead of transferring and running the risk of rejection after messing with them. Just build a wooden double walled box and bury it deeper with the removable lid. Use straw instead of hay as it holds heat better and put a lock on your top so predators can't get in. If you bury it deeper and put the hole up higher, the kits wouldn't be able to get out.
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 5 жыл бұрын
Rejecting has never been a problem. We've tried that. We used to have 1/2" caging around the bottom of the first run we built. I ended up removing it and using it in our chicken coop to keep out the chipmunks. If you keep them in there the kits run all over and you have to wait them out trying to collect/catch them. We sell most of our rabbits so this is a system that we've adopted that works best for us. I suggest you try anything and everything until your content with your Rabbitry system.

May I ask, does having them in a nest box, rather than in the totem, keep them from getting trampled?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 4 жыл бұрын
There isn't any guarantees that a kit couldn't get trampled but Mama rabbits are very aware of their nest and we don't have a lot of losses. We use these totes to maximize the amount of surviving kits and prevent unnecessary losses.

Could you use a dish tube with hay in their hutch?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on how big your tube is. I like the corrugated because they can grip with their paws- It’s good use at least 6 inch tile so the rabbits have enough room To access easily

In most cases your hay shouldn't have been sprayed and then harvested immediately. Farmers are good at spraying and harvesting at the right times in order to flush their crops of chemicals.

Allie, I keep the kits in the tote for 10 days during this time the kits will grow thicker fur and get a little bigger and only then do I move them. With new thicker fur they're able to withstand the cold and rabbits breaking cluster isn't a problem anymore. Main reason for moving Litter: Moving the litter keeps them from digging or walking out of the kindling tote into the rabbit run. Theirs 2"x 4" fencing that keeps the full size rabbits in and predators out but the baby rabbits can get through the fencing and a predator could get them. Moving the litter to a cage at 10 days seems to calm the mom down a little too. I figure she doesn't have to work as hard to keep her litter safe. Thanks for commenting.

@@TheRabbitryCenter Why not have all the totes set up to accommodate a litter, and mesh the rabbit run in with smaller wire? Or move the mother to cage set up for the litter before she has them?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 4 жыл бұрын
@@ebonypegasus9864 Absolutely, you can do that. I'd even recommend installing it that way. especially if your keeping them. But not having the kits easily accessible does make it tough to sell rabbits. We choose to do it this way for two main reasons. Health and Convenience. We sell most of our rabbits. Most of the time we have our litters sold before our litter's are kindled. Having orders to fill you really try to leave nothing to chance. Our rabbits just don't stay with us long. Catching them is difficult. Keeping the Does comfortable and giving them a safe area to kindle is the main reason we choose to use the totes and runs. Our runs are for our does to stay comfortable and get and stretch their legs while leading up to kindling and 10 days after kindling. Kind of a 3 week period to themselves. We remove the litters at ten days because we want the kits to get bigger and stay safe and healthy for their pick up date. The tote is mostly used for our does pregnancies keeping them in comfortable temperatures to prevent losses and then once the kits have more strength and fur this is our 2nd stage where we move them to a grow out cage with momma so they can be monitored closely and remain 40"high. Safe above a predators reach.

There’s a lack of airflow in your totes when there’s only one way in they’ll cover the front of it so drill very small holes Around the sides and back Drill hundreds of holes for good circulation . I like to go all the way up to the top right underneath the lid to help prevent rain and water from getting in

@@Brock-Lesnar-WWE bro i bought 3 rabbits and kept them in a horse stall and after about 2 months I had like 30 rabbits. I moved half of them outside into fenced run area and probably had around 40 rabbits before a fox dug into it and killed a few while they all escaped. this was near easter so my family and I had a "fun" time catching escaped rabbits. I think we found/caught around 12 and put them back into the hutch and now about 3 have nests full of babies. it's definitely easier to keep them outside. i don't even notice or smell rabbit piss, and the poops are great fertilizer that cant burn plants so I just throw it all into my garden. they HAVE dug a massive warren/tunnel system that goes down at least 4 feet and then turns. my arm isn't long enough to reach in with my phone camera to see what they're doing down there but they definitely dig, and get dirty. i have one rabbit i call "miner" that is always brown with clay from digging
