Harn is such an impressive product line. Thank God for my gamemaster Craig who absorbed its details so we could play in this world. I've used Harn a bit in my own games but mostly just for maps - it's just too much detail for me. But these Harn episodes of Sage's Library have opened my eyes to the advantages and possibilities of that detail - of starting small with a local set of characters and conflicts and growing out from there into a consistent wider world.

My wow moment was the gargun. I really like that they aren’t just humans dressed in a rubber suit like most humanoids, but fundamentally alien.

The supplement about manor economics was so detailed and appeared to be historical to me. It will blow away the stereotype that people in mediaeval times were primitive and not very bright -- manor management is complicated.

Just backed the KS. I'm more than a little excited to take in the world of Harn. I like the idea of using a very rules-light ttrpg for a setting like this, so the intricate world can be the focus and not the character sheets. I might use something like Advanced Tiny Dungeon for the mechanics at the table.

I love the Harn stuff.. but I think a hard question needs to be asked about their pdf pricing policy. Its offensively high …the same price as its print equivalent in some cases… and makes it difficult for people outside the USA to buy certain supplements at non-extortionate prices. I’m quite lucky that i have much of it in print from the 1990s but they’re cutting off their non-US market with their current policy.

As much as I love Harn, and it's my favorite game world (I own just a few of the PDF's but I have almost every print product Columbia Games has ever released) the pricing of the PDF's is what's prevented me all these years from going hog wild and purchasing them all. I 'personally' feel if Columbia Games markedly dropped the PDF prices they'd sell allot more copies. Maybe in the end it wouldn't result in more revenue for them but it would lead to many more people being exposed to the wonder that is Harn! And that is a big net positive in the end. No matter how many RPG apologist shout that a PDF is still the same intellectual content as a printed book, thus similar pricing is valid that argument will always fall short. Having the cold dead tree in ones hand makes it 'real', rather than a digital/virtual/ephemeral product on your device.

@Vlad The Inhailer first of all, you're name kills me, lol Second, I agree with the tree flakes sentiment. I think if PDFs were cheaper, a few of those would go back and get the book. Further, I think the hobby should double down on book prices actually. Do a pdf at 50% the book price, but load the book with color art, scratch and sniff pages, glow in the dark artwork, etc

I love Harn, amazing realism and just so different from anything else. I don't know if Columbia Games reads these comment but my appeal to them is please find a way to distribute your games in the UK! The cost of shipping from the US is prohibitive.

I picked up the Harn bundle on Drivethrurpg a few hours ago, and gave it a read. I just finished a Harn rewrite for the OSE module "Hideous Daylight". I feel like really leaning into the religions of Harn can really up the mysticism and presence of magic.

I have ran a Harn campaign every couple of years running a low fantasy rare Magic DnD, Starting with ADnD then 3rd Ed I have my own Pathfinder version. Two most talked about events are the adventure of the Iron Pot, where the Wizard need an Iron Pot for a spell and could not get any of the villages to sell him one as it was autumn and if they gave him their Pot they could not get a replacement as the trader would not get back to the village till spring. And the ex Jarin revolutionary Ode who as a very rare half elf who did not know his origin, left when the North, after 60 years he still looked 25. He walks into an in in Tashal 600 old miles away and I look at the Inn in the module and the Innkeeper is an ex Jarin revolutionary, So Ode walks in goes to the Bar and orders a pint the Innkeep looks up and says 'Ode?'

What would your favorite system be to run this in? I know that in the interview they say that any system can work, but are there any systems that are particularly compatible. The standard HarnMaster rules seem a little more dense then I would like to play.

Chivalry and Sorcery,. when I saw the first edition all those years ago. My first thought was this is a C&S setting the fiefdoms aren't quite the same size but otherwise it looked pretty much identical to what a world generated according to the original C&S rules would have been,

My own view is that you should pick a system depending on what you want to do with the setting this time around. Whether that's an extended, traditional campaign or a one-off or a short series, or whatever. I have run and played HârnMaster in Hârn, but also GURPS, freeform, The Pool, a hacked Apocalypse World, Torchbearer, Fiasco and D&D 4th Edition. They all worked for what I was aiming to do at the time. Chivalry & Sorcery would be a great choice, as Simon suggests above. So would Savage Worlds or something like Warrior, Rogue and Mage (although the tenors of the game you would get would be different - but Hârn could support them all). To start out, what I suggest is that you skim an overview of the whole world and see what catches your interest. Then zoom in, and zoom in until you come up with an area that you want to use. Then read about that area in as much detail as you can find (and want to read!). Then think about the system (preferably one you are familiar with; taking on a new world and a new system at the same time might be hard work!) that you think would fit with whatever it is about that part of the world that interests you. You want rogueish larceny (in, say, Hârn's Lia Kavair, or 'thieve's guild'), Blades in the Dark might fit. For exploring mysterious sites and seeking ancient treasures, try Torchbearer or one of the OSR systems. For a convention session game around clash of hombres at Trobridge Inn (on the Salt Route) I have used Apocalypse World (hacked a bit for the medieval setting and specific characters); I have run it several times and each time has been different but hugely fun!

Trevor, How do you feel about Dominion Rules for a Harn World campaign. Is it a system You think you would like to spend more time with?

I loved Harry back in the late 80s then stepped away from RPGs for a long time. When I returned it looks like Columbia Games really haven't created a lot of new content beyond a few animals. They have mostly repackaged old content. During the same time Crosby's side was exploring non-Harn areas with new stuff and customer created content. Was this divide contractual from the split-up?

CG has been publishing new and expanded content for decades. So I don't think your statement is 100% accurate. For example there have been new publications on two Ilvirian clerical orders, The Order of Pia-Gardith and Order of Seafarer Ibenis, Ibonost Keep which is a royal fortress in Kanday, two guild articles, the Weaponcrafters and Courtesans guilds, the Kingdom of Menglana which once dominated western Ivinia, the Froyaheim Thran (royal castle/settlment) in eastern Menglana, and that's just since January of this year.
