AKA The Saint's Girl Friday.
'Blondes... Bullets... and Blackmail... Can't Stop Him'
A solid light-hearted mystery from Hammer Films, actor Louis Hayward (despite the fact that he is not the young man he had been a decade and a half earlier) returns once more and for the last time playing Simon Templar, the character made famous by Leslie Chateris long-running collection of novels about "the Robin Hood of Crime" produced by Hammer Films in the UK (with a nice nod to Hammer Films legend Terence Fisher) and distributed by RKO in the States. Its quite a rarity this one to fans of the Saint series. Interesting to note that it would be another decade before it was successfully revived on the small screen, with a perfectly cast Roger Moore. The film is notable for the unexpected but memorable appearance of a very young 22 year old Diana Dors who plays a temptress who tries to seduce the Saint in order to keep him in her apartment "Look Baby, you don't need a GUN! Use what you've GOT!"

Louis Hayward was an excellent choice for “The Saint.” In fact he was the first to play him, in 1938’s “The Saint in New York.” After that, George Sanders did several films. Hugh Sinclair made two (not very good). Then Hayward returned for this. Roger Moore remains the most popular; hardly surprising after a seven-year series. Ian Ogilvy was also good, in “Return of the Saint.” Unfortunately, we were later subjected to a thoroughly asinine film with Val Kilmer! As this was an independent British production, it was not part of the Hollywood series. (Hayward aged well.) I had always wanted to see it! Thank you for finding this and uploading it.

@@redblade8160The biggest reason Diana did not get the reception she deserved in Hollywood was the abusive, narcissistic, manipulative asshole that was her first husband. He sabotaged her early Hollywood chances by turning down roles opposite actors like Burt Lancaster, just because he wanted to make the most money possible off her without giving a damn about her actual career. Even when she did go to Hollywood in '56 for RKO Pictures, he still screwed her over by having her turn down the role that eventually got Jayne Mansfield acclaim in The Girl Can't Help It. To say nothing about truly killing her Hollywood career by nearly beating a photographer to death after he, her and a few others were pushed into the pool during a welcome party. And that's on top of the fact he regularly beat the hell out of her and mentally abused her. She would have been a much bigger name today, much more remembrance here in the US as well as England if it wasn't for him.

@@redblade8160 The reason she didn't go down well in America, and why her chances at becoming as big a Hollywood star as others is squarely on her controlling, narcissistic louse of a first husband. He drove her away from Hollywood jobs opposite actors like Burt Lancaster and Tom Ewell (She was offered the role that went to Jayne Mansfield in The Girl Can't Help It), directed her squarely towards acting gigs that didn't really show off her true acting capabilities, and sabotaged her Hollywood career in 1956 by going to town on a photographer who pushed them in a pool at a party, which is what signaled the demise of any chance of being a Hollywood star. All this, when he wasn't constantly cheating on her, slapping her around and using her money as his own personal piggy bank. Boils my blood; he was married to such a beautiful and wonderful woman, and treated her like dirt.
@redblade8160

@@joeygoodwin9629 Oh, yes, I did hear something like that; it slipped my memory. The story reminds me of some rough piece of dirt from an Al Capone gang that lured her in by promising her the world, but only to bleed her dry and then leave her for dead!

Diana Dors, the British counterpart to American blonde bombshells -- Jayne Mansfield, M. Monroe -- was the youngest student @ LAMDA. She worked on stage & screen earning kudos for her performances in "Yield to the Night," "The Long Haul," "The Unholy Wife" & appeared on numerous TV episodes in the US. One of her 3 husbands was actor/game show host Richard Dawson. Louis Hayward, Ida Lupino's first husband, was born in South Africa, came to the UK where he wanted to act becoming Noel Coward's protege. After arriving in the US with Lupino, he enlistef in the USMC, & was awarded the Bronze Star during the WW II. Some of his best roles include the dual role in "The Man in the Iron Mask," "Ladies in Retirement," (with Lupino), & "The Strange Woman." He was in many swashbuckling movies, but Edgar Ulmer cast him in "Ruthless," a type of "Citizen Kane" melodrama. He worked on TV as well. His smooth, charming facade belied an evil mind who could inflict pain or save a damsel in distress. His films display a versatility of characters; his nuanced performances imbue each character with a realism worthy of Shakespeare's heroes whose inner dramatic tensions enable him to explore the human condition in a variety of costumes & settings.

Unless sudden rotational force or other acceleration stress occurs, one is NOT zuddenly knocked out. A hard pistol induces severe pain, but it requires a little time for a skull fracture to cause swelling or hematoma damage which damages the brain. And the scene with Diana is contrived. All that 1950s sudden passionate smooching is not how women function in seduction.

Simon Templar - The Saint - was an independent operative, a free spirit. He was never a government agent or licensed private eye. But he was always on the side of right. Even while driving them to distraction, he stood ready to work with Inspector Teal in London, or Inspector Fernack in New York. Police around the world were wary of him because he operated outside their systems, too - especially when he was helping foment revolution! But the major negative point (for them) was Templar’s penchant for helping himself to some of the booty at stake: cash, gold, jewelry, whatever! And to rub it in, he would leave a note with his famous symbol: the stick figure with halo. (Roger Moore did not show the shadier side very much.)
