I never understood this scene as a kid. I was like, why would they ever stop hanging out? Now as an adult, I realize years have gone by since I’ve seen my childhood friends. That’s just part of life, you become close with your buddies when you’re little, and then everyone grows up and moves away/ loses touch. While it is sad, I can’t help but smile remembering the fun times we had together. I hope to give my kids a childhood like my parents gave me.

I remember watching this from my earliest childhood, around 6-7 years old and up until my early teens when you'd still see this movie at blockbuster or something haha.... I'm in my early 30's now, and this scene makes me sad and happy at the same time..... sad because it's all true, all the precious friendships i made in the 90's as a kid, playing sports outside with all the neighbors kids and everyone being friendly with each other, even the neighborhood BBQ was all true as in this movie.... and i would give anything to have those days back..... we never would realize as a kid that we would want this feeling to last forever because we miss it very much....we were in such a rush to be older.. and we would just brush it off when adults said "stay a kid as long as you can.. trust me" The part that makes me happy when i revisit these clips and movies again is for one moment... i can feel that deep spark in me of the happiness i had as a kid with all my friends.... It's a small moment but ill never forget the feeling.. and i hope the rest of you know what that feeling feels like. In case no one has told you lately, I hope you're doing well and life is treating you the best it can, if I was your neighbor i'd throw some football with you just to feel young again. The line right before this clip starts is "Benny always said Babe Ruth was the the Hercules of baseball and it turned out to be the beast's name" - then "no none of us could ever figure out what that meant" - this is the key to the film. Babe Ruth never really "called his shot" as the legend goes (referenced in the beginning of the film) - it was a legend. The beast wasn't really a killer - it too was a legend. Confronting reality behind the legend is the wisdom that comes with growing up Our legends and most importantly our *fears* aren't reality. To grow up you have to pass through fear as they all did in confronting the beast. What happens afterwards is the unsettling knowledge that what was holding you back all this time was an illusion. This is what growing up is like - overcoming these grand pictures we build up in our heads. The wisdom however is the strength necessary for adult life - and most importantly - allows you to help others to confront theirs and grow too.

There’s some more sadness to this scene after he says, “I was the last to move away, but when I did, the sandlot was still there.” Baseball and baseball fields were such a mainstay in this country and in neighborhoods. They were a place where kids and adults could go, make some friends, and have some fun. Nowadays, those same sandlots are torn down or replaced by parking lots or chain restaurants. And the idea of baseball and community gathering has faded away.
