You can't claim to be a fan of the comic and say that you liked anything in this show better than how it was made in the comics. Specially not, "The sound of her wings" in which they left out the most important part, which is Dream's thoughts and realizations while he travels with Death.

The original writer thought the casting was brilliant, so shut up. A character isn’t made up of their race or gender, they’re made up of their character. If a black guy can play the part of a character who was originally white the best, then he should play them. Likewise with genders.

The main thing I hoped they would keep was the fact that Dream can appear however he needs to based on who he's interacting with. It's ultimately a minor thing they could've skipped, but they didn't and that made me so happy. It's actually something I incorporated into my own worldbuilding, where the gods are a single pantheon but they appear to mortals to look like them and answer to the names the mortals call them. Bring on season 2! 😃🎉

Love your review Mike and I agree with a lot of what you said. I decided to start reading The Sandman right before watching and I was completely blown away. Yeah there are some swapping, but the story was still there. There were times I was quoting things said in the book right before the characters said them. I’m genuinely impressed by how much this adapted from the source material. I really hope it gets picked up for more seasons. It’s so rare to see something that is so closely adapted from the source. Hopefully this lets others know that this can be done.

Love this adaption too. The series was one I followed as a teenager in 90s as well and has special place in my heart. The show reminds me that 90s Vertigo comics probably had 4 or 5 titles that are some of the greatest urban fantasys of all time. It is going to set the bar for what I expect from an adaptation. We see adaptations make huge compromises all the time and we get told it has to be this way because it's a different medium. This show keeps all the most outlandish elements of The Sandman and it works out great.

I'm watching this with my Dad (who's never read it) and we've both been digging it. I like how the Corinthian has a Tennessee William's character accent, and I enjoy that he's been the character that's been maintaining all the plot threads. He is trying to keep his agency by destroying Morpheus'. A neat-o angle, for sure. Every character casting has made sense - I wasn't aware of the rights issue for Constantine. I actually prefer the Johanna version as I've seen enough morally grey white men for a lifetime. Constantine's plot line is full of tragedy and self-destruction and bad mistakes that it was interesting to see it through a fresh POV - I mean, they included the disastrous summoning from Hellblazer. I hope she gets her own series, I t think she could handle it. Lucifer I think was based off of Tilda Swinton, not Bowie, so I never had a problem with that casting. I just wish it was Tilda Swinton, but I'll take Gwendoline. And I agree! The amount of things I thought would be left out that ended up in the show! Also, the ending to passengers strengthened John Dee's character arc. He wasn't just a monster. I'm only up to episode 7 and loving it. I have a good hunch this one will come pretty close to sticking that landing and hope Netflix is smart enough to buy at least two more seasons, if not four to finish off the series.

The actress who played Death was Simone in The Good Place. Absolutely fantastic newcomer (I think) and was brilliantly funny. I wasn't sure how well she'd do with subtly or Death, but she absolutely nailed it and with such minute movements. She didn't really need to say much when she could say so much with just a look or a gesture. I loved how they used the Corinthian as the inciting force. In the novels, it was never explained why Dream was vulnerable, so it's entirely probable that this was what happened. The only parts I really felt were rushed were the Doll House episodes. I don't know if we'll see more of it in season two or not, but I will say I liked this version of Rose so much better. Edit: Neil Gaiman was extremely involved in this, from casting to story. The part about having Jed at the convention was what he'd always wanted to write but didn't have enough room, so they were actually able to expand on some of his ideas. Neil (in an interview) said he printed out all his original scripts and gave them to the show runner. He also had a lot of input on the actors and has been defending the casting vigorously on twitter.

Neil literally co-wrote it and produced it. I don’t know another adaption where the author was more involved that Neil was for this. The show runner insisted to Netflix that he wouldn’t do it unless Neil was heavily involved and wrote with him. Which makes it even funnier when ppl freak out about changes when it’s literally the author himself doing them. I agree I wish that was more common! But not every author is willing to do that unfortunately, or they don’t adapt it till after they die 😂.

I think that anyone that was deeply intrigued and/or fond of but not perhaps, 100% IN LOVE with either the comic OR the Show will find an extremely satisfying bridge between the two, in the Audible audio drama. It too has great production values and is able to be completely faithful to the source material. It is done so well that with or without ever having seen the comics or the show (although most who listen will have at least a passing visual reference) your imagination of the world described becomes part of the experience.

As someone that hasn't read the strips he reminded me of every single generic vampire romance older guy/ ancient vamp + teen girl romance character from YA novel adaptations. But, then I checked the comic book character. And holy f that's a very good representation. I feel like they made him slightly too effeminate. It's very obvious that he's wearing make up to hide the stubble etc and that's actually what's making him look YA"ish. They need to either go all in on the make up or have none that is so obvious as now. If they go all in he becomes more like an 80s rocker type which he was likely based off. Same if they tone down the makeup. I legit skipped the show because I saw the characters and thought... ah vampire YA chick romance story, didn't netflix just cancel one of those? next. And then I found out it was based on Neil Gaiman's story / strip and that he is heavily involved. Ok I guess I'll watch. I both love and hate it. It is very well written so far. The story is interesting and cool. But literally every single side character is gay, bi, trans or non binary. And there are very long drawn out romance scenes that mean nothing and add nothing. E.g son of the evil old mage is lying in the grass. Servant boy comes past and is being kind to him. And it's immediately obvious what's going on. Not only because scenes with two dudes being nice are no longer a thing. But also due to how he says it, how concerned he is, the tone he uses and his mannerism. Now, you can leave it at that and it's perfect. You drop that hint we get later on where they are older and he's in a wheel chair and his husband says "come on sweetheart, let's go" or whatever. But no, like it wasn't obvious enough we get a very long romance scene in between. And they need to talk about and explain their fee fees. Like... who the fk cares bro. They have 5 minutes of screen time total. 3 of it is a romance scene. They make a huge deal about every non straight character's romantic life. And it's done so obviously it starts to get annoying esp in a show where everyone is gay.

I was at a wild party in ‘90, and when the host found out I’d never read Watchmen, he dragged me to the back of the house, put all of the individual issues down to a chair, said “enjoy,” with a smirk, and left. I missed the party. 😆 Also a massive Sandman fan, also super happy with the adaptation. 👌🏻🙂

I was so giddy with watching the first episode. I'm only halfway done so far. I was very satisfied with 24 hours. I remember initially thinking, no way will they be able to pull that off (I wonder why they stuck the 7 in the title though?)

It is funny, I went into this very scared. But the show carried itself with such confidence that only a few episodes in I kinda had to make myself remember that there ever was a time where I doubted this would work.

Great review, very well done. I was not a fan of this property beforehand so I had no reference point to go off of but I really enjoyed this show. The episode he met with Lucifer, the one with the Immortal, and certainly the one with Death was very very well done. Death’s episode was heavy in tone and feels but it worked very well.

Huge fan of the comics since the 90s, and I only have two criticisms of the show, one is that they were perhaps a little TOO faithful to some of the flaws of the comics with the wonky pacing of the first two story arcs until he found his stride as an author, and second is Gwendoline Christie's costumes as Lucifer looked really badly made and cheap, which stood out to me as a massive distraction because the wardrobe department did a great job for everyone else IMO. Most of the changes they made I loved, and there's definitely a few that I think improved on the comics: Rose's character and story was WAY more interesting than in the comics, where she was kind of an unmemorable non-entity, the fact that they removed some of the edge-lord stuff that hadn't aged well was a definite improvement, combining the sound of her wings and hob's story was honestly genius and the changes they made to both those stories made them even stronger despite being absolutely in the top tier of issues from the comics. Getting to see The Corinthian more also made him more interesting as a character, and the performance was mesmerising. I don't think I have a single complaint about any of the casting, everyone gave an incredible performance.

I loved it. It's beautifully filmed. I'd have liked to see more of Dream's starry eyes though. I thought his voice was great too and he was fabulous in the role. My only complaint is that I'd actually have liked the story to unfold more slowly. I felt things sped by too quickly and it didn't allow you to become as attached to the characters as you could be - Hector, for example. His fate didn't affect me and I'm a cryer! I also felt Jenna Coleman was a bit too posh for the part and her accent was erratic. But I loved her chemistry with Morpheus. I hope their will bea season two. BTW I have the same Omnibus editions. They're a bugger to read but worked out cheaper. And they look stunning.

It's funny that you mention Jenna Coleman's accent. Unless I've misheard this during interviews, that's the accent Coleman was born with. She's from the same part of England as the John Constantine character.

Good video! I have never read the sandman comic/graphic novel because I've always thought "COMIC'S JUST AIN'T FOR ME" and I still kinda hold that view. But I'm definitely starting to think now that's a stupid prejudice I've really gotta get over. Neil Gaiman is now one of my favourite authors. (Only discovering him during lockdown) and he has completely rejuvenated my love for reading. So of course I should read the comic's. It'll probably open me up to New wonders. The TV series kicked ass. The cinematography, the casting and and the dedication was superb 👏 👌. As someone who never experienced the source material, I still felt spoilt. It felt original, it felt raw, and at times it felt incredibly human. Just like everything else I've read from Neil Gaiman. Amazon Rings of Power Prime delivery will hang their head in shame when they see the benefits of having an author/ or someone incredibly close with the source material to help with production. P.S. Cover Gene Wolfes-The book of the new sun. Its massively under the radar on KZfaq reviews.

😂😂 I love that you call it the "high stakes DnD game." I love how exasperated a certain someone gets during the naming of Goldie. Like everyone I know sighed during that scene the same time as a certain person did. I'm curious what you thought about the changes to the convention and the casting of Desire.

I highly recommend the Audible performance of Sandman from a year ago to anyone who liked or likes this property. It is 100% faithful and the cast is absolutely outstanding. James McAvoy Kat Dennings John Lithgow Brian Cox.. dozens of others. In fact Kat was so good at death on the audio version there was quite the outcry for her to play the character on the Netflix show. It's parts one through four of the Sandman so it goes farther along the story and then the TV show.. and then there's a Sandman act 2 that'll probably take four seasons of the Netflix show to reach.

It really sucks how many people try to convince you not to like this because of the casting. I haven’t read super far into the comics yet but I did read the first absolute edition in anticipation for the show and I feel like the adaptation really captures the feel and essence of the comics. I’m really looking forward to seeing the rest of this story get told, in both mediums.

I think the main reason people were upset about Gwendolyn Christie is that a lot of people REALLY wanted Tom Ellis to reprise his role from the Netflix Lucifer show, since it's supposed to be the same character. That said, I understand the rationale behind picking Christie; even though Netflix Lucifer was based on Gaiman's Lucifer, it was VERY loosely based, and he's a very different character here. It still would've been cool, though.

I'm a recent fan of the book and I'd admire the faithful while cutting the fat in some places and I agree I Appreciate how without shame the fantasy and weird elements and so happy the average viewer likes it.Only real complain is I feel it really hit it's stride in the next two books(which I think should the meat of next season) i really hope we get to see the season of mists arc and have it going the semi anthology stuff with Shakespeare and the cat issue.

I had looked at a few issues back in the 90s, mostly completely out of order, thus I didn't got really into it back then. Even though that little which I had seen back then was really not bad. Still I would say that makes me very much a casual in regards of this property (well, I always was more of a Marvel fangirl anyway). I had not really followed the development of the show, I just noticed the show being dropped on Netflix and since I had nothing better to do over the weekend I thought I give it a try and before I knew it I had binged the whole season. And yes, I cried multiple times in episode 6. So good!

I think this is a rare example of an adaptation that the readers of the source material will like it even more than those who have not. If you had read it before, you'll likely get more out of it, but that absolutely does not mean you won't enjoy it if you hadn't read the comics

This is why being faithful to the source material pays off. Seasons 1-4 of GOT being faithful and adding some things payed off. So many adaptations have gone off the beaten path of the source material and failed.

I only started reading around issue 30 when they were published so am not familiar with the early issues and am fuzzy after 30 years. I found the visuals often very striking, Hell in particular, and no issues with the casting. Corinthian was brilliant. One minor issue I had with the production. The dialogue was often too clear compared to the background noises it often seemed almost dubbed. I also wonder if they also put in a lot more Easter eggs and mumbled dialogue since they expect viewers to pause and rewind often. Another way technology has changed film.
