Benjamin Stephens is a Ph.D. student in the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. He is originally from Oklahoma, but received his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University.
His PhD research focuses on the control of humanoid robot balance and push recovery for force-controlled robots. He is interested in the use of real-time optimal control for robust control of very complex systems. Using his knowledge and experience, he hopes to make legged/humanoid robots more capable of operating in rough and uncertain environments. He also believes this work will lead to the creation of new intelligent assistive devices such as prosthetics and exoskeletons.
To learn more about Ben's research and see other videos of the Sarcos Robot in action visit his personal webpage:

Excellent! Much behind-the-scenes work to make it move so smoothly and keep its balance the whole time, without jerky recoveries and software glitches. A face would make it quite impressive.

@cambo125 This demo was a simple one setup for tours viewing Sarcos during National Robotics Week. Sarcos can do more, but this is what we got to see that day. Stay tuned for leg movement and more.

It's fascinating to see the incremental changes that robotics is going through. It's a steady progression that is showing some amazing potential.I can't imagine where they'll be in 10 25 50 and 100 years out.

One of the major challenges for such robots to overcome is with their ability to reliably grip various objects and manipulate them properly. Like door handles or when trying to lift or drag a soft object using just enough force to complete the action without damaging it by squeezing too hard. One way I can think of that might help to overcome this problem would be to use rubberized tracks overtop of analog 'buttons' that measures force used to maintain a grip on the object by whether or not the track is moving when it attempts to lift or otherwise move the object. If the track moves it increases the gripping force till the object can be moved without the track also moving which would indicate to the robot the difference between dropping the object or successfully doing so. by using a number of these tracks placed in various points on the grabber or hand at different orientations it would tell the robot how much of the object it has engagement with, which finger(s) need to increase force, if it needs to change its grip and how best to move the object in order to complete the task. I may not have described how I see it functioning totally accurately or how best to build what I'm thinking of, but hopefully it is good enough to be understood.

Great vid and great work he is doing. This seems to be the most humanoid reacting bot I have seen to date. I think in ten years with components getting smaller, lighter, stronger where this type of advancement will be. For all the would be doomsters who say this is the start of "Terminator" I would say "change" happens because it is a part of nature so we must embrace it and care for it like a new born baby. Like it or not, we must evolve and responsibility starts with oneself.

Nice fluid movement, I would like to see it walking but I would guess that without toes and/or a bigger foot print it would not be that stable. How much power does it use for the compressor, for my robot I have used servos that I can switch off when not in use, similarly I would imagine a power hungry compressor only runs to top up the pressure rather than running continuously. and I would be interested to see how the two different approaches compare. Good Work !

How many man-hours and funding has been put behind this project? Just wondering also if the motors and parts were custom-made in-house, custom-made by order, maybe 3d printed, or much was available in the marketplace? Thanks for the cool vid.

i think electrical actuators are faster but with hydraulic you get a lot more force. to get decent force with electrical actuartors they have to have motors with high rpm and great gear ratios, like a drill, and they end up being just as slow as these to get the same amount of force.

I think balancing that is "unnecessarily" compliant just reduces positioning accuracy. If the ZMP is not at the edge of the support polygon then the robot should be able to reject the upper body disturbance without moving. I did something like that in watch?v=Xq3k3YAYOeU but its hard to see without the ZMP data. I'll make a better video in the future.

@neoslover I'd say the American firm Boston Dynamics is currently at the forefront of humanoid robotics, despite many Japanese attempts over the years. I love Japan, so much so that I'd go as far as to say I'm disappointed by this fact. I think Japanese technology is amazing, but Boston Dynamics is going beyond anything I've seen out of Japan.

If you made the human robot the exact weight and proportions of the human used for motion capture then it wont need to try and balance since the original dancer already catered for that. I know it wont be easy to match weight and proportions so maybe gyroscopes in strategic places will help. Like one big one just above the hips.
