During the Second World War, the British utilised an incredibly skilled network of spies who worked for SOE, the Special Operations Executive. These spies often did lots of missions behind enemy lines and inside of German/Nazi Occupied Territory, and they also were involved in training the French Resistance. One of these agents was Violette Szabo, a young 23 year old mother who was brutally executed and locked inside of a concentration camp after she was captured.
Szabo was working in France training the French Resistance in sabotage operations, and she learned that the local Maquis were rather disorganised. However during one of her missions, she was captured. Violette was involved in a shootout at a roadblock with a number of German soldiers, but despite putting up a brave fight she was captured. She was then interrogated by the Gestapo and brutally tortured but she never gave up any information and was then transferred to Ravensbruck Concentration Camp.
Inside here thousands of people suffered during World War 2, and Szabo despite being forced to work hard maintained hope that she would survive. However as the Second World War was turning against the Germans, she was executed on the orders of the Camp Commandant Fritz Suhren.

As opposed to the film, she and two other agents had been held in the bunker cell building. One day they were taken out, made to kneel and shot in the back of the head. This was perhaps 30 yards from the camp crematoria. There is a small plaque there. I have seen it.

I think I saw this movie. I thought it was fiction. She was caught in a cafe and despite having been caught she keeps her poise and calm when her contact comes over and she pretends she doesn't know him which gives him the clue she was lost and he has to go away and leave her, knowing her fate. That was pretty sad. Or maybe it was another movie but I remember well the woman, she had been parachuted in France.

After the war the executioners were pursued by a unit led by Airey Neave to try and bring them to justice. The files on the torture and execution of Violette Szabo and Noor Inayat Khan remain open, according to an investigator I met who had trained with her in SOE. Neave later did important work in re-establishing the SAS. He eventually took up politics in the Conservative Party, and had a role in Margaret Thatcher's government. He was murdered by the IRA, who blew him up in his car in the underground car park of the House of Commons. As we approach the anniversary of the bombing of the Conservative Party Conference in those days, we should take a moment to remember all those who have fallen at the hands of enemies of democracy - the combatants, the spies, the emergency services, and the politicians.

we lived on " burnley road, stockwell, london, sw9, back then, and they were making the film, about Violette Reine Elizabeth Szabo (née Bushell) called " Carve her name with pride " 1958. Violette Szabo used to live down this road, we were coming home, and the road had a barrier with a policeman, stopping people going down the road, we got under the barrier, and the policeman said " what are you doing " and we said " going home " and he said " go on then " we ended up on the film, but we did not even know what a film was, at the time, never had been to a picture house, or even new what a tv was at the time, till we saw the film many years later on the tv, and that's when we found out about it.

@@elizabethbarbour481 sorry to disappoint, but the author of the poem is Leo Marks, a writer, poet and cryptographer who was assigned to help train SOE agents in Baker Street in 1943. It was a code poem which (in messages) helped to make it difficult for them to be decoded by the enemy. The film “Carve Her Name With Pride” shows it was written by Violette’s husband Etienne who had died in Egypt in 1942 but this is just to add to the emotive value of the film - it was not the case.
