Thanks to Worksharp and the Drill Doctor for sponsoring this Saw Blade to Knife Build!
Today I'm building a custom knife from an old circular saw blade with no tempering required! In the video I go over how I cut out the knife blank from the saw blade, ground the blade profile, built the handle and sharpened it to an edge that will cut paper! This was a super fun build and hope it inspires you to make something new out of something old ;)
Please let me know if you have any questions!
Please go check out Worksharp Tools and the Drill Doctor!
www.worksharptools.com/
www.drilldoctor.com/
And here is the Amazon list of worksharp/drill doctor tools I used in the video!
Worksharp Belt sharpener - amzn.to/2xptjq9
Drill Doctor - amzn.to/3dBTD0G
Worksharp Blade Grinding Attachment amzn.to/3bnR5BE
Worksharp Guided Field Sharpener - amzn.to/2vT1S7I
If you guys like the videos I make and would like to help support the channel at no additional cost to you. Please consider doing some of you Amazon shopping through this link. I may receive a commission on some of the items you buy. Thanks for considering, it’s greatly appreciated ☺ amzn.to/2hWHbgu

Nice work! Nothing "wrong" with using old saw blades or other tool steels for blades. I'd still re-quench the blade once it was profiled though. Use a torch to heat up just the "edge" and quench it in some preheated oil, then sand it clean again and temper it in an oven for a couple hours to get the best possible edge.

That is a wonderful video. Thank you very much. I once used a handsaw blade to make a long knife to slice bread. It won't hold an edge well. Using a circular saw blade is a good idea. You could even build a rocking dicing kitchen knife thanks to the blade's circular shape.

Love that you used Mesquite as your handle material. It's such an underrated and underappreciated hardwood. Highly resistant to rot, harder than any oak or maple, super stable once dry, takes glues and finishes pretty well. The only bitch about it is getting long straight pieces and it can be murder on tools. I laughed when you sharpened up the drill bit immediately after telling us about using Mesquite as your knife scales and thought, yup dude knows what he's talking about. And for people who don't know, mesquite grows in the hot, dry areas of the Southwestern USA and Mexico. It takes a long time to get a big enough tree for lumber and because of the wind in these areas, you end up with some pretty gnarled shapes, lots of figure and inclusions. Also, you get sand in your lumber because it blows in, the tree grows and it absolutely eats saw blades and drill bits. Don't ask for long clear boards of mesquite, because they just don't exist. But the color and figure you get out of the pieces is just gorgeous. It's heavy as rocks so maybe don't make a violin or a baseball bat out of the stuff but for all sorts of other things, it's fantastic. Hardness is generally above Hickory and almost approaches some Rosewoods. And chances are if you're anywhere from South Texas to Southern California and The US Mexico border on up to Southern Utah, you can find it everywhere.

Val Clothis thank you! But unfortunately I can’t stay home all the time as my day job won’t let me. But we try to be as safe as we can👍👨🏻‍🚒

Thanks Don! I work with a master knife engraver who would certainly know a good knife if he saw one... you wouldn't happen to know him too? ;)

Yes, I might know him! If you upgrade that knife later with some stainless bolsters on the front, he would engrave it for you and it would make a great combo video.👍😎

Very, very nice. You took your time and followed your muse.... :) I love the Wicked Edge sharpening system. Not cheap but it will truly put a perfect, polished bevel (or compound bevel) of any specific angle you desire and that blade will be much sharper than a razor blade. "Wicked sharp" Heh. And it's not subject to any of the errors of freehanding it.

Great job Joe! More knives in the future? Proof you can do anything with minimal tool. We're all in lockdown here in Michigan, but I live in the country so not much has changed here besides toilet paper being hard to find. Hope your good too brother! Dan

Bull Dozer thanks Dan! Yep, living rural makes it quite nice! When I’m not at work life is pretty much the same for us as always! Enjoying time with my girls, making stuff... just appreciating the good things we have to be thankful for😀👍

Nicely done! Would also be cool to use the middle (assuming it's hard aswell) to have hole for a finger grip or just a hole in the blade. Thanks for the vid!

Jace Musgrove thanks Jace! I plan to use the rest of the blade eventually....so perhaps I might do that with that middle part😀👍
