In summary: The brother is disappointed by the SBL

Thank you for providing the first in-depth review in the SBL Study Bible. Regarding NRSVue translation itself, it sounds like they introduced "twelve thousand substantive changes" (SocietyReport2021) across a span of three years (it's conception first introduced in the 2017 Annual Meeting). I hope that this wave of post-1989 NRSV changes doesn't follow the same history of the ESV where it's initial rollout is premature, evident by how many ESV editions have occurred in such a short timeframe (01', 07', 11', 16') not to mention derivatives which introduced textual changes (Gideons, Catholic Edition, Anglican Edition, and several lectionary versions). To have a rushed translation with an accompanying study bible only then for it to be tied to a specific edition which soon becomes outdated would be very unfortunate and encourages people like myself to wait out purchasing. Interesting that you bring up favor with Oxford's Catholic Study Bible as it is indeed a critical work and therefore comparable. It's study material along with the NABRE translation's footnotes are indeed critical enough to even dissuade more traditional Catholics who lean toward both more conservative translations (RSV-2CE, ESV-CE) and similarly conservative study bibles (Ignatius, Didache) from using it. Some of the few product reviewers agree with you that the SBL Study Bible seems to lack in content compared to previous editions of the HarperCollins Study Bible. You may have mentioned it, but along with already owning a HarperCollins Study Bible, perhaps already having an Oxford Catholic Study Bible or even the NOAB (New Oxford Annotated Bible) also would not warrant enough need to obtaining this. Thanks again for your contribution especially with the current state of lacking reviews on such a new product. I'll be checking out your other content.🙂

Thank you for your great insights and for sharing them. I apologise for the delayed comment. The Catholic Study Bible remains my go to. I can’t comment on its critical text but if I am not mistaken it follows the NA28(revised edition).

I think SBL Bible is for beginners. Oxford Study Bibles are more detailed and richer in info than Harper Collins and Interpreters Study Bibles/Commentaries, and are aimed for intermediate level readers. I am enjoying reading the Oxford Jewish Study Bible, although Jewish Bible is just a footnote of Christian Bible.

I quite agree with you that the Oxford’s are much better in terms of content. I think the previous version of the HarperCollins Study Bible was better. It has more articles. But I can see pairing the SBL with a good commentary. It should work well.

@@historytheology As I understand, both Christians and Muslims do not say, at least the normative ones, that we are the Chosen People. Such thinking is pure arrogance.
