This ain't your 7 year old's tornado size comparison video
Honestly, though, there's a lot of tornado size comparison videos out there, but none truly capture the scale of these behemoths of the sky. I'm here to set that record straight. Let's take a look at the real sizes of a handful of the more notable tornadoes in meteorological history, and hopefully you can get a little bit of that sense of scale that one gets when actually confronted by one of these monsters.
Footage used: • Video
Music playlist: • On The Nile
Clarification bulletin: this video discusses size within the confines of the definition of tornado as described by the glossaries of the American Meteorological Society and World Meteorological Organization, that being a rotating column of air extending from ground level to the base of a cumuliform cloud (i.e. cumulus humilis, cumulus congestus, cumulonimbus, etc.). This video does not discuss parent circulation or vorticial structure of the tornado beyond the LCL, and although the actual tornadic column may rise for several miles beyond the ground, semantically the tornado terminates at the cloud base.

*One minute little scaling error on my part: at 13:32 the Sears Tower's roofline should be a bit above Pampa, not just its antennae. A nitpick, maybe, but it would bug me till the end of time if I didn't address it.

As a meteorologist and an artist whose pencil work concentrates on tornadoes, typically, knowing the height to width ratio is actually important to me. I would love to see an addendum Dixie Alley's tornadoes because it seems even the visible ones are still not as photogenic as in the Great Plains. I've theorized that this is due to lower LCLs.
@RojoFern
@RojoFern 8 ай бұрын
The disorganized appearance of Dixie tornadoes may be a combination of factors stemming from the same root issue, that being the generally higher humidity. It makes me wonder if the high humidity means that it simply takes less effort for tornadoes to form a con-funnel, as opposed to the plains where condensation sculpts itself around the low-pressure core. Couple that with the lower LCLs, and what you end up with are these blotchy, pancaked stovepipes and wedges. Now, although I have studied some meteorology professionally, I can't in any capacity claim to be an atmospheric scientist, so obviously take my opinion with a hefty grain of salt.

LCL IMO makes a huge difference to the photogenicity of all storms... Here in Utah thunderstorms always have dramatic flowing curtains and you can visualize the whole thing but where I grew up in Ohio you could never really see the overall structure of a thunderstorm unless it was very very very far away from you... So you couldn't really ever see both the thunderhead and what was going on underneath it cuz there clouds are just too low. Probably similar effect with this. Basically I think high base storms let you see the forest but low base you see trees but you can't really see what's going on overall

An interesting story from the Pampa, TX tornado, as seen on the Discovery Channel; A man was in his storm cellar when the door was ripped off. He felt the air rush out of his lungs and his dog went to confront the "intruder." He tried to grab his dog before it was sucked out but failed. He never saw his dog again. What he DID see was blue sky straight up the funnel. The tornado went the entire height of the storm.

It is important to note that the F and EF scales are relative to observable damage. This means some tornadoes that had the potential to be among the most violent in history get lower EF ratings (such as El Reno that had world record wind speeds). Nobody doubts that El Reno was EF5 status if it hit a metropolitan area, but thankfully it stayed over mooville; population 1500 cowpatties. You can see the result of this in the Jarrell tornado as there wasn't much observable damage prior to hitting double creek because it was out over ranch land. When it hit double creek all of a sudden the nader was rated EF5 because of the incomprehensible damage it caused there.

El Reno is still to this day, a puzzling event as well as a horrific event It’s not as bad as some other tornadoes But it gave you a taste of what could happen Imagine if that thing hit Joplin or bridge creek instead of mostly open fields Or imagine if it did continue longer on and did reach the backed up highway that had hundreds of people stuck on it And the scariest part is, it can happen again, and it can be worse
@tomhsia4354
@tomhsia4354 29 күн бұрын
El Reno 2013 by itself could have been as bad as a tornado outbreak concentrated into a single track. Just look at all the videos about its veritable forest of subvortices and satellite tornadoes. It's almost made to kill cars given its invisible main circulation and heavily rain-wrapped nature. All the other "super wedges" would have been horrific as well. Imagine the Hallem F4, Mulhall F4 (F4 damage from a mile away), or Trousdale EF3 hitting a metro area.

@@RojoFern Also minor nitpick but I just wanted to point out that whenever you obtain the LCL of tornadoes, you are using morning soundings and taking the most unstable parcel. Because the MU parcel takes the parcel with the most instability, and morning soundings tend to have large inversions, the MU parcel in a morning sounding can often be taken from above the surface, thus giving an elevated cloud base. During the day, surface heating and mixing will occur, significantly lowering the LCL. Keeping this in mind, using surface-based (SB) or mixed layer (ML) parcels from 00z would give a more realistic estimation of the LCL height. This probably wouldn't change the height of the cloud base for most cases too significantly, but it is something to keep in mind. The most prominent example would probably be the May 15th 1982 case, as the LCL estimation goes from 1981 meters to 1413 or 1661 meters, depending on which parcel you use.
@RojoFern
@RojoFern Жыл бұрын
I definitely had this in mind when compiling the data. My height estimations are based off a mix of historical sounding data and actual imagery of the tornadoes. If the MU value tended to agree with what the tornado displayed visually, I typically went with that value. Often they didn't, and I'd have to refer to a sounding later in the day or take one of the other values that seemed more reasonable (Spearman I initially thought to be over 1400m tall, but re-evaluation put it down below Cordell's height). Brookfield is a very interesting case, and I went back and forth on whether or not to even include the segment in the video. the 1980m figure was collected from a morning sounding to the north in Green Bay, which already made the estimation rocky. However, given the tornado's starting coordinate relative to where we see it in photograph (denoting a northwestward movement), the length of the path, as well as the size of the condensation funnel in the photo considering its distance from the photographer ended up concurring with a funnel height of over 1900m. I seriously couldn't believe it (and to be fair, I still second guess myself on it), but from what I could make out it was in the realm of that height. Bottom line is, though, that I knew the great potential for error when using historical soundings for height estimations, and I certainly attempted to mitigate it. I'm honestly happy someone else could point this out rather than just blindly agreeing with what I've presented.

Tornadoes are unimaginably large. A few years ago there was a “little” fart of a tornado that measured over a mile and a half wide fairly nearby. That’s about the distance between me and the nearest Walmart. Or the distance from that Walmart to the nearest Walmart to it. More recently there was a tornado a just few hundred yards wide. Even that smaller tornado was huge. 100 yards is a good distance. But a few hundred of those? That little tornado would eat my whole subdivision in one go and take my shingles with it. You can barely even comprehend a mile wide wall of death churning through a city. It’s just too big. Fortunately they’re rare but we’ve also had near hurricane force wind storms that are even larger. Big things are scary. That’s the reason I still have night lights on when I sleep.

But to actually experience one is almost a spiritual feeling. I say this as an athiest. But when you watch a tornado from close up, and then walk through the aftermath? Its nearly impossible to witness one and not feel like you're at something supernatual. The way they move is like nothing else in nature. Nothing stops them and very little withstands them Ive seen stone blocks and freight train cars picked up like toys, as if the Gaia herself is pissed at what we've built and decided to remind us how small we are.

I'm having trouble finding the specific sounding but I found an animation of that day that showed an lcl of 2500 meters in North Central Colorado that day. Can you run your program to see if this is accurate? If so, that storm might best Campo by 730 meters. Love your work!

I came for the info - but stayed for the 1970s jazz intro. XD Honestly love your selection of music in general. I like that it plays such a strong role here. Also some terrific editing to go along with it, even putting lightning strikes to your sick synthwave beats. Love it.

Update to my previous comment....NWS said the tornado on June 7th, 2021 Weld county Colorado was over 10,000 feet high. This might warrant a part 2. If that's the case Campo, although better looking is "fun size" by comparison to the Weld County storm.

I haven't looked at the Denver sounding for the day yet, but afternoon surface temps and dew points do suggest the storm had a pretty high base. I assume NWS Boulder made the 10000 foot claim; do we know how they determined that height figure?
@jasonperry7970
@jasonperry7970 7 ай бұрын
No idea how they came up with the 10k foot figure but I got that from a 9 News Denver story, I tried posting the link but youtube won't let it post.

One thought here. You mention Moore 2013 having 100mph less winds. We don’t know that for sure. There was no DOW or anything else to observe the winds. Still wiped slabs clean, wind rowed debris etc…. I’m not convinced at all that 2013 along with the EF5’s from 4/27/11 were all between 200-210mph. Likely much higher. Structures impacted failure points wouldn’t prove anything higher. Even if the winds were 400 mph, if the failure point of any particular structure is 205mph, that’s all it will get estimated at. I hope I’ve made sense.
@brandonevans4020
@brandonevans4020 7 ай бұрын
EF5 means at least 200mph winds based off damage. A bit unfair to compare 2013 to 1999 since one actually had wind speeds measured and the other is just estimated by damage.

Yeah that's like the 4/27/2011 Philadelphia/Smithfield tornado that dug an almost 2 ft. deep trench just from ground scouring. I think that could generate the force to throw an abrams tank several meters if not a kilometer.
@gavinmoody5678
@gavinmoody5678 7 ай бұрын
So the wind speed had to be pretty intense though I don't know if windspeeds have an exact equivalence to ground scouring. I just know a tornado is considered more powerful the deeper and defined features of it's scouring of the ground. Even in a well built basement or subterranean level of a home your safety isn't guaranteed when it's ripping and peeling the ground up almost a meter thick. It's obviously possible to suck out the occupants of the basement. Wow some ef5's get so intense even the get below ground protective measure becomes vulnerable, like your only option is to hopefully known well in advance that it's a high end ef5 potential wedge coming giving you enough time to get within miles out of its way.
@gavinmoody5678
@gavinmoody5678 7 ай бұрын
Many many miles out of it's way st that because I'd be afraid of a strong ef5 potentially spawning a satellite tornado that would wipe me out.
@carlmay9532

@@gavinmoody5678 the part about “being considered more powerful……etc” One thing to consider though is the type of soil. Not taking anything away from the Philadelphia tornado. Obviously incredibly intense. But I don’t think it would scour the ground the same way if it were in a different part of the country. For example 2015 Rochelle IL the EF4(questionable rating) wiped well built structures clean and even moved a concrete walkway dragging it across the ground, but didn’t have near the scouring. Different types of soil are easier to move than others. El Reno 2013 radar estimated winds of 296mph and very little scouring. Could be soil type. Could be difference in wind dynamics between the storms. Perhaps Philadelphia MS tornado had greater vertical velocities? I’d love to one day have the technology to know for sure all the dynamics and how the inflict different damages.

As a fellow nerd I _LOVE_ what you’ve done here… communicating science is tricky, and this video is gold. 👍 The most important factor in effectively communicating scale is _putting it in the right context…_ that's no small feat itself, and the reason so many (especially mainstream media!) don’t do it well. The shadow diagrams you use throughout, as well as the tongue-in-cheek comparisons @ 4:55 and 11:55 are brilliant… really eye-opening for someone like me who is fascinated by the science but being outside the US, has never been able to contextualised these weather events. The inclusion of metric measurements as well as “freedom units” makes a big difference for us non-American viewers too, as it’s so much easier to engage with the points you’re making in that moment. My only suggestion would be to show both measures each time (eg. 700’ (213 m) _or_ 1 mile (1.6 km) ) to ensure all viewers can be on the same page, and it avoids confusion if you alternate between the measurements you're using in your narration (like swapping between metres and miles at around 8:00 ). But really thought-provoking content in all the best ways… an immediate sub! 👍 (by the by… the videos that include tropical cyclones in their comparison may be doing it to provide some context to their viewers, as equatorial regions like South East Asia, Australia/NZ, etc are much more familiar with the scale & damage from a cyclone. Tornadoes are much rarer outside the States.)

And recently, one of the most photogenic tornados ever was captured by Reed Timmer, and there were even shots from an RCV. And no, before anyone tries to, "correct" me, a Remotely Controlled Vehicle is *NOT* a drone. By definition, dones are autonomous, which means they are *NOT* controlled by a human on the ground.
