I noticed some overdubbed audio. Works for me. I don’t think all your narration has to be done ‘on the bike.’ The video ended a bit abruptly. I guess it was a tease for your next video?

Honestly, I couldn't tell. I thought it was all your audio was recorded live during your ride. Good job! Your reaction (acting) made me feel how you felt during your ride out here in California. Awesome! This was a great video.

Basic Lanesplitting rules: 1. Only split between the 1 and 2 lane (far left) 2. Don't split if traffic is moving above 40mph 3. Don't go more than 10mph faster than surrounding traffic 4. Cover your front brake with two fingers, and be extra aware of "gaps" when cars will move over quickly Otherwise, as someone who's been riding in CA for 13 years, lanesplitting is the only way to get around

Also be extra vigilant when approaching off ramps. People suddenly realizing that they need to get to the ramp from the fast lane are a major danger.

5. Ride a bike that has fast steering geometry. 6. Prepare for how they will not see you and if they do see you in the side mirror, they will unintentionally drift toward that side (like target fixation), closing up the gap you are in.

We literally have those exact rules here in the Netherlands except it's km/h and not mp/h lol. So you can't lane split if traffic is going over 40 km/h and you can't go faster than 10 km/h faster than the traffic you pass. And you have to lane split between lanes 1 and 2. Those are literally the rules, that's funny

Europeans watch Americans freaking out over lane splitting with puzzled astonishment. Over hear it is as common as walking. It’s a part of riding a bike from the very first day. Here in UK everyone does it all the time.

Yes we all do it here in uk. but rather than give you space assholes in tin boxs will close gap. you really need to be aware when doing so here. people do give you space but suspect most are riders when not driving.

I’m in California, and I don’t see any drivers moving to make space. friend told me some open their car doors, too. But, I haven’t seen that yet.

To me it’s obvious we don’t just need a better riding/training program but we need more incentives for motorcyclists. The small amount of filtering and lane splitting I’ve seen has me 100% convinced on its merits.

same here ... in paris you would not even calling it lane spliting , there is so much space between the cars .. I am sure we would have 2 lines of bikes. I have to say I am also really surprised by the amount of comment of people freaking out.

I can’t stress this enough. Ride your own ride. Your skill level may not be on par with the next person and that is ok. The main thing is you return home safe to your loved ones. This is what I tell myself. By the way I love my Cardo.

Agreed with Donrudeboy T here 150%! Ride to your own pace, this can potentially be extremely dangerous, especially with some of the drivers out there. It's a great thing being allowed to but, never take risks where other bigger vehicles are concerned, pushing yourself can result in panic which can cause you to put yourself in even greater danger, ride ALWAYS to your own comfort and experience and practice using inanimate objects that can't hurt you if you misjudge a bit.

It is suggesting she practice in a safer environment till she feels comfortable THEN at her own pace amongst the rolling lumps of steel that will kill you if you make any mistake. Caution, NOT reckless, genius.

I'm a returning UK biker having ridden small bikes in my teens until I got a car, and am now (at 50 years young) three years into my second riding career on my first "big" bike. I was very nervous about filtering until I went out on a ride with a couple of my trusted friends (sensible riders) and followed what they were doing. Now I do it all the time and absolutely love it. I tend to only do it if the traffic is stopped or going below approximately 20mph, and I'll only pass vehicles at a speed difference of around 10mph maximum - I feel safe enough doing that and also feel that I'm going slow enough that I SHOULD be able to react to anything unexpected from the vehicles I'm passing. In the UK lane splitting/filtering is legal and our Highway Code instruct other road users to be aware of motorcyclists passing between cars etc, but not everyone in a car likes it or is even aware that it IS legal. You find some people will purposely move over to block you, but most will move to let you through if they can.

Yeah, other road users in the UK know that lane splitting or filtering by motorcyclists is legal (actually it has never been made illegal, there's a subtle difference, but has been established in law such that motorists cannot cut up a bike that is filtering past). Some road users are helpful and give motorcyclists space. There are however guidance speed differentials. To use the american definition "filtering" is mostly done at lights but lane splitting on a motorway between lanes at speed can be dangerous (beware of idiots), better done as a simple overtake. When motorway traffic slows to a crawl or a halt, then it is filtering again, or splitting, as the two terms are interchangeable here.

Watch someone get rear ended at 30 miles an hour. Much worse than having to be prepared to slightly swerve or brake.

@@MurrMan23 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. Buddy lost half a leg and totaled a bike getting side swiped by a car. The rear wheel caught his leg and pulled it under and wrapped it up in the wheel and suspension at about 15-20 mph. He was on vacation in NY and was hit by a cab. Someone else I know was run off the road at highway speed and went head first into a pole and did not survive. Improved odds does not lessen the injuries. Just makes them less likely to happen.

Gotta watch out for people taking your lane even when not splitting. The best part is getting to the front of the light and getting away from them in city traffic.

Expérience. Watch dandan the fireman to recon risks in traffic. Those can be applied to lanefiltering/ splitting.

I don't think I'd want to do lane splitting at high speeds. If traffic is moving well, I'm good. Lane filtering at slow speed is a great ideas for bike riders...👍😺

Technically we're not allowed to lanesplit unless traffic is slowed down to like 30 mph or below. Even then, we're just supposed to go just 10 over the speed to traffic. But that doesn't stop people from going double the speed.

When I lived in California I rode an RD400 Yamaha with a very wimpy horn. Got ran off the road couple of times and only was on 60/210 freeway once. No way I dared lane splitting when I couldn't be seen or heard!!

In the UK, we are allowed to lane split/filter, but if you do it dangerously/too fast you can still be stopped by police (dangerous driving or driving without due care & attention, I would guess). My own private rule is to filter at about 10/15mph above whatever the cars are doing until the traffic is doing about 40mph, then I just rejoin the traffic (I'm never in that much of a hurry to risk my life).

I live and ride in CA. Nothing cooler then when the cars move over for you and see the sea of traffic splitting for you to slip by. I loved hearing your reactions while you ride....you're adorable.

You did real good! I'd hate to think of CA traffic without lane splitting, we couldn't live without it. Yes, many car/truck drivers move to give us a little more room if you don't surprise them by going too fast.

Lane splitting should be legal everywhere! I got the LA experience last fall and wouldn’t have gotten anywhere without it. Instead trips take half the time Google says it will!

@@seanmac5093 As tragic as that incident was, if splitting were legal everywhere & it were something that both drivers everywhere knew to always be on the lookout for, & something that all riders were experienced in, that might not have happened. There's currently no data on what sort of impact legalized splitting has on rider accidents & fatalities, so we have no idea if it generally makes riders safer, less safe, or makes no difference. Lane filtering, though (riding between stopped traffic to get to the head of the light), pretty much only makes riders safer as it eliminates the possibility of being hit from behind while stopped, with the only real risks being hitting someone's side mirror if you're not paying attention, or someone being an asshole & deliberately opening their door to stop you, & both filtering & splitting reduce traffic jams for all commuters. Anyways, at this point I'm mostly just rambling, so I'll just close it off by saying that while we don't have real data of just how risky responsible lane splitting is, there are definitely some very significant benefits &, were it legal, it may mitigate most of the risk by having all drivers trained to be on the lookout for it, & all riders trained to do it as safely as possible.

Having ridden in the UK for 42 years I find filtering very easy and safe. What I do find dangerous is listen to music when riding, it takes away one of the most important senses you need to ride safely, madness in my opinion.

What's weird for me is that listening to nothing, I'll get drowsy, and listening to music makes me pay too much attention to the music and not the road. But listening to a podcast, I'll still pay attention to the road, but not get sleepy, and when I'm done, I rarely remember anything about the podcast. Listening to people talk lets me focus on other things. Maybe I'm just a crazed narcissist?

It's been a few years since I rode, but living in Southern California, lane splitting is a must. My wife didn't do it and didn't like me doing it, but when I sold my bike I agreed to deliver it to the new owner. We were in stop and go traffic with my wife leading in the cage. She wanted me up beside her and told me to split lanes and we would meet back about 15 miles up the road. As a former rider, I try to spot riders coming up behind me and will make room for them whenever possible. I just wish everyone would look out for bikers.

As someone who rode a big Harley lane splitting on LA freeways I would always ride during the day with the high beam on and thumb resting on the horn button. You develop a kind of six sense as to what the person in each car is doing. You can anticipate which cars are paying attention and which ones aren’t or are about to change lanes. No turn signals of course. Thing is the cell phone has made MC riding so much more dangerous. Especially in LA where nobody is paying attention to driving. Stay safe out there Doodle.

Great job Doodle! Definitely an advanced skill. You brought up an important point few people touch on in the discussion. The reduction in rear end accidents causing traumatic and catastrophic injuries such as amputations, spinal cord injuries, and traumatic brain injuries. Injuries and deaths caused by motorcycles being rear ended are down substantially. As an ambassador for disability service organization for the newly injured patients, we have seen the numbers change dramatically.

That's so cool you got to ride with Dan the Fireman! I have learned so much about riding just from watching his videos everyday!!! I was stuck in near stand-still traffic for the first time last week and my first thought was how nice it be to be able to filter through all the stopped cars lol. I was very concerned about running out of gas that day

I live in SC and the only time I have lane split, is when traffic is backed up, at a dead standstill and I'm looking for an escape or alternate road to go onto. It's not legal. but I'll take my chances with the law. Loved this video! Ride and stay safe in the Peach State Doodle!

In my home state in New South Wales (Australia). Lane filtering is legal. It has some rules with it (traffic shall be travelling less than 30 KPH which is approx 19 MPH) but has been very successful since it was introduced about 10 years ago.

Years ago, I took a job that had a 50 mile commute between burbank & rancho Cucamonga. In a car during rush hour, it took 1-½ to 2 hrs. Lane splitting on the honda vfr took less than an hour. First time I tried it, I thought I was gonna die.

Still the best channel about motorcycle riding. I rode all over the state of California on hard tail choppers, 1976 Kawasaki KZ900 and BMWs and was never comfortable with lane splitting. Keep up the great work.

Having grown up in CA, lane splitting is second nature for me, but there is an art to it that takes practice to both get good and to get comfortable doing it. With its heavy traffic, it is an essential skill in CA. One thing that is pretty universal in videos that show lane splitting is that the cameras make it look narrower than it really is.

The horn on my RD400 was unreliable and too weak to be of use. In fast traffic that bike got buffeted too easily. But it was fast!!

Good point Michael, lane filtering is an advanced skill. Teachable, and should be taught by the MSP schools. Much like how Doodles just learned, with experienced riders with comms.

YES!! I love that about LA! People DO part like the Red Sea for motorcyclists in Los Angeles when you’re lane splitting! You can see by the traffic, you HAVE to lane split to keep the traffic from jamming up further. I just moved out of LA to NorCal and this video made me homesick!!

I've ridden, off and on, for 60 or so years. Tried lane splitting two or three times. Massive rush. Major goose bumps. Took an hour for my heart to get below 70. Fun but terrifying, to me. I am in awe of those that can zip by. IDK. People just don't watch for bikes.

Easily the one thing I miss about living in California. Lane splitting made my commute so much easier. So wish they'd make it legal in Georgia. Even then it would take time for those in cars to adjust how they drive to make lane splitting as easy here.

I live in São Paulo, Brazil, and it is simply impossible not to lane split here. The space between the cars is very narrow in some streets, so the riders have come up with this habit of constantly honking, so the drivers know you're there. Very risky, but if you can lane split here, you can lane split everywhere!

As a Californian, I’m impressed with your splitting skills 🙌 I haven’t tried it myself yet but I can see why a biker would. My bagger is huge, I’m a little concerned about getting stuck between cars and hitting someone 😅

I did that in California and got out of military and came home to Georgia; doing it around Atlanta would be insane. Being able to talk, that would be cool, somewhere on the West of 285, a very common thing in a common situation, "guy in blue car doesn't know which way the blinker lever goes, be careful." Washington Rd exit, yeah, that side of 285, if it happens like five times, it's a thing.

When I lived in NY we would split and filter. I stuck to filtering myself but people accepted and it was fine but I’ve also heard of places where people will go out their way to block you. Haven’t tried here in Georgia yet

Here in Japan splitting and filtering are a bit of a gray area. People still split but I stick to filtering at some lights that offer an escape path.

I miss California. The first time I got stuck in a traffic jam and saw several bikes pass me by my wife changed her mind on lane splitting. She shouted, "I'm burning up. Go!" It was wonderful. You are right, CA drivers watch out for bikes for the most part. I live in Virginia now and miss it. Drivers here are oblivious to bikers and it's much more dangerous. Learning to lane split is better solo. You can ride at your own pace and stop in open pockets and calm yourself if necessary. Glad you experienced it.

i giggled while watching this. i live in mexico, and let me tell you we do something a level above lane splitting. we cut thru traffic on either side of the car, we do zig-zags between slower cars, right lane passes, we ride on the shoulder to avoid slower traffic, run red lights, go down the wrong side of the road to avoid speed bumps. so yea, advanced warning for you Doodle, if you ever end up riding in Mexico… good luck

I am glad that you got to experience lane splitting. I live in a state that does not allow it when I live in America. when I live here in Thailand, I found that lane splitting is not just a common occurrence, but a necessity. Lane splitting is done here not just at low speeds, but also high speeds. I have been doing over 100 Kph and had people lane split on me. This kind of action will even happen in the monsoon deluges that happen here. The ones that worry and scare me the most are the ones who lane split on the mountain roads going to Mae Sot from Tak (I live just outside of Tak with my wife and mother-in-law) I have both an American and Thailand driver's license and motorcycle endorsement for my home state and the separate motorcycle license for motorcycles that is required here for riding motorcycles.

Good effort Doodles. Keep your speed down (no more than 20 mph above the traffic speed) and take care. Its also very tiring to do lots of lane splitting due to the concentration required.

AND Hawaii... to a smaller extent. It's legal for motorcycles and scooters to use bike lanes in certain areas to essentially filter through traffic when it's really backed up. It's a little bit confusing as to when and where so basically people just do it everywhere and get this. It helps overall traffic a lot!!

Late to the party on this video ! Makes utter sense to maximise traffic flow, you can save so much time. I live in an area that gets busy in holiday season, coming back from work I would often have to lane split for miles - car journey 45/60 minutes, bike journey 25 minutes even with all the traffic 🙂

I bought a Lifan Expect over the phone. My only regret so far is that I waited so long, I’m 59. How do you like the Cardo? Which model do you use?

7:06 had me take off my headphones, I thought there were gun shots in my neighborhood LOL. I definitely need a audio system and always had Cardo on my mind, just amazing how fast the group was able to pair up. Also I think I would like Dan in a group ride, those call outs are A1.

My nephew and I rode from Florida/Georgia to Los Angeles last month and hit I-10 in afternoon traffic. Lane splitting seemed like a great idea until we tried it on our baggers, then nope, nope, nope. Hats off you California riders who have it figured out. Not for me.

So I currently live in California (North Bay area) but not from out here originally. I’ve gotten ok lane filtering at stop lights unless of course truck and/or bus makes it difficult. However, riding on Interstate 80 I can’t bring myself to just take off and zip thru traffic at 55-60 like I see being done all the time. I ride by myself so I’m sure being in a group makes it much easier on the nerves. Great video!

I remember my first time. It was in November and I was on a rented xsr 900. Totally forgot it was a thing until a Sportster cut me off and then disappeared between some cars. It was perfect. It gave me something to target fixate on. Like your experience, I really missed it as soon as I got home.

I live in Utah where they allow lane filtering , I know how you feel Doodle at first its a little unnerving to split lanes! But after doing it quite a bit you get used to it ! 😀😀

I'm a Thai, living in Thailand. I learned to ride motorcycle in Indiana in 1960s. First warning from my US friend pillion rider was that lane splitting was illegal. When I returned to Thailand, I never lane split or filtering. I'd stop behind a car. I was kind of afraid that the car behind would honk horn to push me into filtering. But that never occurred , Cars drivers were tolerant of my motorcycle. BTW, I stop my bike near the left side of the lane ( we drive on the left side just like the British) so car could share the lane. But that never happen. I see many accidents because of lane splitting and filtering, and feel that they should be illegal. But you mentioned that Californian drivers were moving like the red sea to accommodate motorcycles Lanes in the US are quite wide, but traffic lanes in Thailand are narrow.

Having just moved out of California, I miss lane splitting. It’s definitely more efficient for everyone on the road, despite how some car drivers seem to hate it.

It's so strange hearing this isn't legal in the US. In the UK filtering and lane splitting is legal as long as its not dangerous as if done incorrectly you could be prosecuted with driving without responsible consideration, driving without due care or dangerous driving.
