The reason Sadness solved the darkening console so easily is because it was the Idea that Anger planted earlier. Once Riley took the idea, it was stuck. Fear wouldn’t work to remove it, more Anger wouldn’t remove it, Disgust wouldn’t remove it… the only way to remove that idea was Sadness. Making Riley realise how sad she would be if she really left her parents behind. It may’ve seemed like an easy fix, but it made complete sense.

The thing is, if Joy hadn't let sadness take the memories, she would make Riley happy, therefore making Riley think she was doing the right thing. Yet another reason sadness was needed.

I really love this movie, it doesn't just speak to kids, but adults as well. Bing Bong's line of "Take her to the moon for me, okay?", and Joy's response of "I promise, Bing Bong", never fails to make me bawl. 😭💔

I think that sadness instantly knowing what to do is very fitting Sadness is something that you don't have to figure out, it's a natural response. And we also see that sadness has impulses to touch memories all trough the movie, it's literally her purpose and she feels a need to fulfill it, but the other emotions where keeping her in check Also, it shows that the sadness was not a sudden tought, it was being bottled up all along and she was just keeping it that way in denial, and letting it out was that simple

Only Amy pohler could play a character like Joy without being so mind-numbingly annoying And Phyllis Smith is the absolute star of this movie. Her voice is perfect for sadness and the sweetness and care in her voice just matches too perfect for words

I revisited this movie for the first time in years recently, and I was floored by this ending. Like… I’m sure a lot of people have experienced such strong negative feelings for so long that they just go numb. That’s how I interpreted the emotions not being able to control Riley anymore. “We can’t make Riley feel anything” really got to me. And the fact that sadness is the one who freed her from that- sometimes you have to face a sad reality in order to come to terms with it

Inside Out is one of those movies where you really have to stop and think about what it's saying because its message is legitimately uncomfortable for a lot of people. The idea that you need all of your emotions, that it's ok to be sad sometimes, is something even a lot of adults struggle with. Chaining yourself to just being happy 24/7 will just lead to depression and apathy, I know because I've been there. Notice how the movie also never specifies Joy's role in the mind. It's because joy, unlike every other emotion, is fickle and fleeting, it can come and go in an instant. Joy's main character flaw throughout the entire film is refusing to accept that the emotion she embodies can't be forced, which caused the events of the entire plot.

I really love that scene where Joy experiences sadness and cries when she finally comes to her senses and faces the consequences for her own actions. Like that Joy crying scene really symbolizes what Pixar is as an animated studio: sympathizing and sharing our feelings :’) Inside Out is really good. :) I thinking a lot of people give Joy so much unnecessary criticism and hate for very wrong reasons. Like they say she’s the villain of the movie when in reality she’s not. :/

The part of the movie that hits me the hardest was when the console goes grey and Riley loses the ability to feel anything at all because she has finally succumbed to depression. Chilling, and accurate.

Of all the emotions it makes sense that Sadness would know immediately what to do, she did read all those manuals.

A nice little detail that I hadn’t noticed the first couple of watches is how with the dual emotion core memories, the islands grow bigger than they were before. This really helps drives home the message that emotions are a messy side of the human mind and that some emotions are taken as bad when in reality, embracing how you are feeling and realizing that it’s good for you to feel sad or angry. Because that’s human nature and allowing ourselves to feel those emotions makes us more complete and developed individuals in the end

The reason I love this movie so much is that it very directly cuts through a HUGE misconception most people have about what depression actually is. Depression is not simply being sad all the time. Depression is when you can't feel anything at all. It's when your entire sense of happiness and sadness is just...gone. Replaced with numbness. This is why it was vitally important to the plot that both Joy AND Sadness were stranded out there. And often the first sign someone is recovering from depression is, in fact, when they start processing their sadness again. Just as Joy comes to realize at the end, Sadness isn't a bad thing. It's there to help you get your head around the things that hurt you, and to help you seek relief in the people you love. This is SUCH an important real-world message for people going through loss or trauma. And the world is full of well-intentioned but misguided people who, like Joy at the start of the movie, think they can help depressed people by just forcing them to focus on the good or happy things in life, when what they really need is to find a constructive way to face what's making them unhappy.

You know when a movie is so powerful you break down into tears from watching a review of the most emotional scene in the movie. I’m not crying, you’re crying!!

I LOVE this movie. I relate to Riley a lot; I was always the "happy kid" growing up, and my mom once did ask me to keep smiling to help when my dad was going through a tough time. I moved around a lot as a kid and into my adult years thanks to my dad's work, and each new move was a fresh load of sadness at leaving friends behind. I had imaginary friends and outgrew them. And when I was thirteen, I had my first depression. I remember feeling this profound sense of catharsis as I watched the final scene. It felt so raw and so real. People like to think depression is just feeling really sad all the time, but really, in many cases...it's not feeling anything at all. I had a deep sense of apathy about myself, my life, and my family, and the only reason any of my growing discontentment was discovered was because of the overwhelming sadness that finally poked through the neutrality. It so perfectly captures that moment where nothing seems to matter, until suddenly you're hit by a feeling of grief and realize all you wanted was someone to notice how hard things are and how much you just want a hug from Mom and Dad. Obviously everyone's situation is different, and this movie won't be an exact one to one for every person struggling with depression, but I see myself in Inside Out. It was the first time I ever watched a movie that felt like it was made just for me. There's something very special and beautiful about that, and it's scenes like the one described here that stick in my mind and make me sob like a child every time I watch the movie. I physically cannot make it through this film without crying at least twice. I'm so glad it exists, if not just to make people like me feel like someone out there truly understands how it feels to be us. Thank you for emphasizing the impact this movie had on kids learning to talk about mental health. It's truly remarkable.

This movie legitimately made me cry every time watching it because it’s always been after something really tough had happened, even just when seeing you review it, I always forget how hard this hits especially when you’re a teenager going through the thick of it all

The reason why the bing bong death scene has so many failed attempts is because at this point of the movie, joy is starting to think it’s hopeless and is holding on by pure desperation. As the scene continues with multiple failed attempts(none of which seem to go farther than the last), you can feel the tension and desperation crescendo as you start to fall into the mental state of joy. YOU want them to succeed and are equally frustrated that it’s failing and are desperate for success. Which finally breaks into a single heart wrenching moment where you do succeed, you get what you wanted, but at a cost you weren’t ready to even consider. The most important aspect of that scene is pacing which the whole team(director, artists, animators, scriptwriters, voice actors, etc.) nailed perfectly. The ability to put the audience in the shoes of a character is really difficult but this movie became my favorite Pixar movie by how effortless it was able to do that multiple times.

You're completely right about the solution being "easy." But more often than not, most of our conflicts, both internal and external, can be solved fairly easily. We like to think that the solution must be equal in size and magnitude to the problem. If the problem is drastic, so too should the answer be. But in reality, it's far more simple than we realize, and *that* is precisely what makes it so hard to fix the problem. 99% of the issues we face can be fixed with just one thing: a new perspective.

I think the scene at the end was supposed to be easy for sadness. They make a point to show that Anger, Fear, and Disgust couldnt do it. Its likely that the anger only made her think of how angry she was about moving away, fear reminded her of how scared she was about going to a new school full of new people, and disgust reminded her of how much she disliked her time there so far. Joy wouldnt have been able to because it would’ve just reminded her of how happy she was in Minnesota. But sadness was able to make her realize how much she would miss her parents if she went through with this.

As part of my mom's work she encounters a lot of children with communication problems (most because of autism, but from other stuff as well) and this movie actually really helped teaching those children ways of expressing what they're feeling

in highschool in norway i went on a line that was everything from medicine to working in a kindergarden, and our teachers showed us this movie as a great example on how help kids understand emotions.

the one quote from Joy that made me sad is "I just wanted Riley to happy" because we all want to be happy even when we're not but it's all we really want and eventually we forget how to help ourselves and how to accept change in a healthy way

I think a memory with both Disgust & Joy could be like one of those times when something is so bad it’s funny.

At the start of the film when sadness feels the random urge to touch the core memories but joy shoos her away. It is like sadness is starting to seep in but Riley is trying to push back the sadness she’s feeling and ignore it. That is why the character sadness herself doesn’t really understand why she feels urged to touch the memories.

I remember a classmate once wishing everyone could be happy and never feel sad anymore. Me after watching this film immediately questioned whether we would really want that. If Joy was the only emotion we ever had, would we still feel 'true happiness' or do we become indifferent to that and over time feel nothing at all? It's the great variance of emotions we experience that make life worthwhile imo, it makes you cherish your happy memories.

Why do I have the feeling the sequel is going to be relatable to me since I'm 17 and almost past my teen years?

I know that it might just be a “we want a visually appealing character” thing, but as an artistic person one of the first things I noticed was how fear, anger, sadness, and disgust all have very monotone outfits only shades of green or red or purple or blue. Joy instead of being all yellow has blue hair and eyes, and a green dress with purple accents, showing character design-wise that she cannot be fully her or do what she does without having the other emotions alongside her to make it even possible that joy happens. I hope I explained that well, I just thought it was amazingly cool.

I don't think Sadness' moment on the console was undercut by HOW the console mechanically works. They could have given Sadness a bigger climactic gesture in restoring or repairing the console, but in the reality of the moment, all Riley really needed was to be aware of her emotionally charged decisions. Riley really needed Sadness. While replacing the awareness bulb is such a small gesture, it is established that the Emotions don't drive Riley's body, they trigger physical reactions with emotional responses. We just see that the emotions press non-descript physical response triggers, while Emotion with the control in hand is conducted through Riley's face. But the entire plot basically explains that the console demands Sadness' attention and presence. The suspense of the scene wasn't if Sadness would pick the right button to sequence the console into doing something, it was if the console would boot back up in time to Sadness's presence, and alarm Riley of her choice, and return control to the emotions to guide her back home in time for Riley to get off the bus within the town.

I think Inside Out appeals so much because its moral goes against societal conventions. Modern society pushes individuals to constantly pursue dopamine highs, or “Joy”, and ostracizes anyone with depressive tendencies, in this case, Sadness (not talking about medically-diagnosed depression, just good ol’ feeling sad). Don’t believe me? How many times have you been told to “cheer up” or “look on the bright side”. The movie’s end fosters the idea that it’s ok to be sad, that you don’t need to be dominated by joy all the time. And I think that validating a traditionally-disregarded emotion that everyone has is the true appeal of the film.

I’m happy the movie is getting a sequel, but I hope for this one they give more screen time for Anger and Fear. Not because they’re my favorite characters or anything, but because those are the most common emotions for teenagers to feel. At least, they are for me.

WHY DO I GET TEARY WHILE WATCHING A VIDEO ABOUT A MOVIE?!?! One part that really makes my heart tremble in this scene is that final smile that's followed by that one shaky exhale. That is such a human response to a situation like this, and I love it. One thing i would like to see for the sequel is the way that the brain works with the rest of the body, like Riley's muscles calling the emotions after a hockey game to tell them that they're completely exhausted and the emotions congratulating them for bringing in the win.

Inside Out is a great movie, I can't wait for the sequel

This movie just digs a hole in your heart, it's so powerful. Sadness is something that is infectious, one thing can make you sad, and then it causes other things to make you sad. It'd also infectios in the way of empathy. Seeing someone cry can make you cry.

Like Charlotte's death in Charlotte's Web, This is the scene in Inside out always give me tears. This movie is genuinely a great time of a film.

I thought that that one little bulb was the representation of the "idea" of running away that the others couldn't remove? Like the ENTIRE point of how easily she could get it out was that she was undeniably what was needed to remove Rileys certainty of this idea where the others failed. If she'd struggled or needed to do something complex, it would have undermined that whole lesson bc it would have seemed like the others could have done the same if they'd just kept trying enough, you know? The actions and hurdles to overcome had all been in getting back, there's your climactic action, this was about the story being told about how emotional maturity functions

Dunno why I'm getting slightly emotional watching an analysis of an emotional scene, but I think it says something powerful about the scene itself and about your commentary on it

One Island of Personality is an oversized piano. The music that is always playing is Vangelis - Nocturne, A Piano Album (2019) Main Theme from Chariots of Fire played at somewhere between %30 and %34 playback speed. The core memory is blue and yellow marbled with blue and gold glitter. I find myself cherishing my favoritest emotion in the entire universe.

I first watched this after becoming a parent, and holy shit does that end scene with her parents absolutely crush me.

One thing that stuck out to me when i was a kid was how everyone else’s feeling people were portrayed as one gender whereas Riley’s had two. I doubt that they would throw gender confusion into the plot because well…its Disney but its still kinda interesting

The climax at the end is powerful, but what really caught me was that scene towards the middle where Bing Bong is upset and crying, and Sadness starts to console him. When Joy goes to tell her not to bother, Bing Bong is feeling better. This completely shocks Joy. This is probably the start of the events leading to Joy's final realization with the one memory in the pit, and it helped me personally put into words that "crying it out DOES help you feel better." Excellent video. I remember being disinterested in Inside Out for a very long time, only finally begrudingly watching it literal years later when it was all I could find on tv to hold my attention.

I remember watching this movie with my youngest brother after a time in my life that just flipped my whole world upside down and it was honestly the first movie to make my cry in a while. When Riley says "I wanna go home, please don't be mad" it really just resonated with me on a very personal, emotional level. It's so crazy when you can actually recognize a connection with a character in a movie like this. It puts the whole theme of it into perspective.

I absolutely love the details shown during the scene with riley finally being able to explain what's wrong with sadness's help When she first comes into the door there is shock, fear and almost anger is shown by the parents immediately with the mother questioning where she was because of how worried they were but even those feelings are washed away in mere moments by the sheer relief that she is safe again, how strong their own fear was until that moment was palpable in those small things. This is then followed as we the audience are watching Riley process her memories of home and starting to cry as both parents look on with nothing but concern and a need to try and help but not knowing how or with what yet whilst also not pushing at all and waiting for their daughter to process whatever it is that she is going through and letting her speak completely uninterrupted. Just after she says "I miss minnesota" both of their expressions change again, the father slightly more subtle but remaining focused on the needs of his daughter and wanting to protect her from this obvious pain she is feeling and the mother with a slight head tilt already desperately wanting to comfort Riley but waiting for her to continue. This then is ended with the great line "please don't be mad", and judging by the shocked look and gaze towards one another we saw that was probably a thought that had never even occurred to either of them with the mother then turning back to Riley right away to comfort and reassure her whilst the father has a brief moment where he looks down and shakes his head no doubt dealing with some guilt about what pressure he unintentionally put on his daughter's shoulders. Absolutely brilliant work from everyone involved and I hope they know just how good a job they really did.

As a kid i used to love this movie but it wasn't until i turned 15 and moved away where it hit so different- And it honestly feels so relatable, the message was always so unclear to me. But now i see it.

Ok. Great over analayzation…about the bing-bong dying scene…the way I interpret it, in a reality-based way, or whatever you wanna call it is this: Riley hadn’t quite completely forgotten about her childhood imaginary friend, that brought her so much joy, and comfort. But as you said, she was almost a teenager. I’m pretty sure this scene is about the hesitation that comes with accepting that your imaginary friend is only that-imaginary, and moving on. It’s a part of the maturing process. As far as I understand, EVERYONE has had an imaginary friend at some point, or another. But most have also had that period of accepting that they eventually have to let go of that mindset. Not necessarily the happiness that it brought them, but rather the delusion that they had a friend, or existing peer that actually was hanging out with them. Now I’m not exactly I worded that in the best way possible, so if anyone has any additions, or corrections, feel free to pin them in a comment of your own, or a reply to this comment!

Riley is sad because she has no siblings. A brother or sister forces one to realize that the world does not go around one's self. You learn to win and lose with a sibling since you are cooperatively competing within the family so that no one loses. Also, Riley needs a dog that she must provide care. Learn responsibilities as a kid.

This was the perfect movie to come out during the Era of toxic positivity

One thing I noticed, that was obviously intentional, is how Riley has emotions be male and female, while everyone else we see has emotions that match their birth sex. I wonder if this is a subtle hint that Riley will uh, discover something about herself.

there is a lot of nuance in the details, and a lot of my appreciation for the movie comes from it. So much nuance in fact that the cynical "bingbong is going to sacrifice himself" prediction mindset is just hyper focusing on the wrong details. Joy is not the overprotective and exclusionary one just because of her nature, but instead her environment. Sure, Riley is allowed to cry physically, but not emotionally. She just moved away from her life as she knew it, and yet her parents dont fully recognize the strain it puts on her up until the climax of the movie. It is easy to miss, and there is no malice behind it, but every interaction between Riley and her parents prior to her breakdown boils down to "just keep smiling, even if it is hard. your smile gives us all strength." Riley picks up on the subtext without realizing it and puts all the pressure on her emotions to remain forever happy even when sadness is needed. What we see the emotion characters go through is all metaphorical, and there is an entire layer of subtext in the movie that comes just from trying to decipher how the emotion characters' journey represents Riley's reality. Bingbong's sacrifice is just another piece of Riley's past that is lost after moving in reality. The struggles Joy and Sadness go through, and the constant coming up short of their goal to return represents Riley's own abandonment of the emotions. The movie is framed like the emotions are in control of Riley, when in reality, they are the ones being controlled by Riley. The more subtext you absorb inherently, the higher your initial enjoyment of the movie, even if you cant put the subtext into words.

I'm so scared for the sequel to this movie because I am absolutely in love with this movie and sequel movies don't have the best reputation. I hope it's good.

So they're making a sequel now, huh? It would be interesting if, in addition to the plot about Riley going through puberty, they go with the original idea of some of her emotions somehow escaping her head. Perhaps Fear could be one of them, I feel like that would be a good move. For example, Riley can no longer feel fear and finds out the reason as Fear himself comes to explain the situation to her, but after the initial shock, and maybe some attempts to get him back in, she finds that she enjoys the fact that she can't feel fear, whether from an accident involving Joy's influence, or maybe even something beyond the other emotions' control. It could lead to a really good moral and some potentially powerful scenes.

I was 13 or 14 when this came out and although I wasn't that interested in this movie, my mom still dragged me and my brother (6) to go see it, more so for him since it is a kids movie. I cried during this movie and it shocked my mom, she turned in disbelief and kinda laughed as she looked at my face to see tears, she said, "Girl you crying?" and all I could do was nod and wipe my tears. I think it is a mistake to chalk this movie up to be just a kids movie, that you just throw on, this is definitely a family movie that can be enjoyed by all ages.

Inside Out is absolutely one of my favourite movies

I rarely tear up during movies, and when I saw Inside Out in theaters, this is the scene made me tear up. So yes, I agree.

God this whole movie is such a fav of mine like it hurts so good but God it's a needed movie for some people. Alot of people think they can just keep going by smiling when honestly... it's okay to cry it's okay to feel bad when situation doesn't go your way.

As a kid watching this movie I just thought of it being a fun adventure and moral lesson like most kids movies. Now that I’m older, Ive actually went through that same experience as Riley, moving away, loosing a lot of friends, and not wanting to be here anymore, and not in the running away sense. I’ve luckily passed these hard times, though it definitely still effects me. Seeing the movie now that I’m older hits way to close to home, and I hope the sequel is actually good, and not a money maker.

If I were born a girl, my name would have been Riley. Also, I lived in Minnesota for my early childhood before my family moved to the West Coast when I was a preteen. I’m starting to think they were watching me for far longer then I knew o_o

bing bong dying is not suppose to be "OOO MY GOD!!!" it's suppose to be a coming sadness seen a mile a way. Joy wants to hold onto childhood, where happiness reigned supreme. But no one's imaginary friend makes it out of childhood, and as the audience we know that. That is the "twist" knowing what HAS to happen and watching it actually happen. I doubt anyone with an imaginary friend can recall the exact moment they forgot them, but regardless we all have that feeling of forgetfulness of something amazing in your past. Also sadness was not a "simple exit" or however you said it. Allowing your emotions to take control over you is a tough experience at any age let alone 12 years old. Sadness needed to be the one to pull that idea out because anger put it in. there was no other choice, nothing could surpass the anger and feeling of betrayal and loss of innocence. But sadness can make you quickly reevaluate. also the console is just a metaphor for who's in control at the moment. sadness just needed to be there, sadness and joy just leaving the control tower flipped her world into chaos.

1:16 I mean to be fair, if you looked at all the movies that are Pixar movies only and also came out around the time Inside Out came out (so 2015 till now) it’s definitely the perfect movie to get a sequel to be honest (well I might eat my words once Elemental and Elio comes out cause who knows maybe one of those movies if not both might get an sequel as well but since they haven’t come out yet gonna skip them) since the movie left it opened ended for an interesting sequel if done correctly

I just noticed now how for making joy the leader they incorporated every emotion in her her hair and eyes were sadness the right side of her Aura was a pink and purple which is understandable seeing how red with white is pink and it fades into a purple as if she is worried about something while her dress is green and and her skin/fuzz is yellow usually put with joy joy was made to be a leader and that’s what she did she also learned when she had to let go of something like control which shows how not everything remains the same happy hour lucky way

Well, I feel like the reason Sadness knew exactly what to do is because she was with Riley from the very beginning, as seen in the first scene of the movie. She was there when Riley opened her eyes, so of course she knew that the only thing lit up on the darkening console is probably the main problem.

for the time sadness removes the lightbulb... i think the thought is letting go of something and that in itself is not a complex task in like it requires much action but its still something u can only do if u come up w it... so therefore it was sth onl sadness could do whereas on the other emotions u had the controls that made that the others couldnt do it(if u wanna make the argument w other emotions couldve done it)

When this movie came out I was 11 years old, like Riley, and moved house in the first time in my life. I had friends for the first time and we moved. To ppl who were friendly and ppl who actually broke me stuff which I couldn't connect with anyone. I had really bad time after one or two months and this movie just popped in the best time. It has a special place in my heart. Yes, I think Joy is annoying and Disgust not funny but somehow, I could really connect to it.
