The show launched in 1975 at a time when America was about a decade away from the civil rights movement. While race relations had improved there were still tensions lingering throughout the country. The show came at a time when audiences felt uncomfortable discussing such issues.
The show was mired in controversy even before it aired. Many executives felt that the characters could be a poor influence on American students. The show also faced boycotts from people who were offended by the premise. In fact, some episodes were even banned in parts of the country!
But the controversy didn’t slow the showdown - in fact, it may have even helped its success! Welcome Back Kotter became one of the most popular sitcoms of its time. It helped launch many of its cast members to stardom - most notably, John Travolta.
But despite the shows’ success, it continued to be met with one controversy after the next. Eventually, it came off the air and ended in 1979. While it’s been almost 50 years since Welcome Back Kotter was originally aired on our TV screens, it remains one of the funniest and most important American TV shows of all time!
So, what were the controversies that plagued Welcome Back Kotter? Why were people offended by the show when it first launched? And what was the straw that broke the camel’s back? How did it eventually come to an end after surviving so many setbacks?

“The episode that took Welcome Back Kotter off the air” evidently means just “the last episode”, not “why kotter was taken off the air….watch this episode to find out why it was the reason it got kicked off the air”. This was misleading, but good job.

After Vinnie Barbarino became a part-time character on the show, things started to get weird. Horshack saved a girl named Mary from suicide, then later married her. Vinnie got a job at the hospital as a janitor. Mrs. Kotter got a job at Buchanan High as a receptionist. And Mr. Woodman became school principal after Principal Lazarus left. That was a lot of changes, and it really changed the show so much that their ratings tanked and never recovered.

Welcome Back Kotter was also shown at 5.15pm on Granada - a regional Independent Television channel based in Manchester UK covering the North West of England! It was shown in the late 1970s and early 1980s. When I was at college, we used to do skits of some of the characters. Until now, I never knew anything about how this comedy came to be but it shares lots in common with many British and Irish comedies: The key to great classic comedy resonates from the life experiences of the creators and writers, making the characters relatable - this fact alone is lost on those who have little purpose or experience of real life, have wafer-thin skins and are far too busy being angry/offended/both for people whose lives they know absolutely nothing about whatsoever. That is why comedy is in intensive care today. Welcome Back Kotter was really great fun and it had a great theme song, too - and the humour travelled well across the Atlantic. We had 'Sweathog' classes, too! Thank you for covering it.

I always got a kick out of the Sweathogs always coming and going via the window instead of the door whenever they visited Kotter at home. I loved them all, but I have to say my favorite was Horshack's mother. Wasn't she played by John Travolta's sister? I'm also very disappointed to hear "Mrs. Kotter" didn't particularly like Gabe. Off the air means the last episode or scene before the show was ended. Have gotten to see several episodes thanks to reruns, etc. Like many good shows it featured many good characters from the Sweathogs to the principal to the wife, as well as special guests. Hard to pick anyone in particular outside of Mr. Kotter himself. All the others were equally good and entertaining, but Gabe Kaplan's character had to be, has to be, the star of the show without taking anything away from the other characters. Yes, a great show. Interesting it aired at such a transitional time in America and it's themes are still relevant today.

I loved this show. As a 10-15 year old, during its run, it was funny, with likable characters, and the message really was always positive. This "we're all Americans" message could be beneficial today, but people now find any little thing offensive, and the necessary stereotypes wouldn't be allowed. It's really too bad. Vinny Barbarino was my favorite, though it took all their chemistry to pull it off.

Always liked "Kotter"-However,the show had definitely "jumped the shark" by the final season-For openers, viewers no longer heard Gabe Kaplan tell Marcia Strassman another anecdote about one of his relatives-John Travolta only appeared in eight episodes due to his movie career taking off-The show was basically on life support at that point-The producers brought in a sweathog who was from the South-The audience wasn't having it.

This show introduced me to the love of my life ... John Travolta 😍 Unfortunately for me, I was only 11 or 12 years old at the time but hey, love has no bounds, right? I was bussed into the inner city for grades 4-6 and it wasn't easy for any of us. Turns out there were plenty of people who weren't so happy to see us everyday,; some students, SEVERAL teachers and at least one principal . But this show was great at showing how people (especially kids) can get along with each other, have fun and make friends no matter our differences. Combine the lessons of acceptance with great humor and resilience (plus one's first "true love")and it makes for great viewing and adoration! Now I need to go find episodes to watch. Thank you for posting this! 🥰

Same! Totally fell in love with John Travolta (for life lol) even though I was only 10 years old or so. AND I had the same experience with bussing. SO many of the teachers didn't want us white kids there, it was a miserable time. An hour long bus ride to a school nobody wanted you in. But at least we had Vinny Barbareno and friends 😅. Have a great day!

@@michaelmisiaszek2514 I agree with most of your choices. T.V. shows were fun back then or had a real life feel. They didn't have all the technology to mess T.V. up like they do today. There is no reality to this days shows. They are either Horrifying or so surrealistic....they aren't worth watching. Beverly Hillbillies...Green Acres and Petticoat Junction were fun shows to watch. Also Andy Griffith show. Shows taught kids morals back then. That is long gone. I wish I could go back and relive the late 60's-70's again. Politics are destroying everything now. Too much bad news. We can always look for some of the old shows on KZfaq. Though I see there aren't many free ones to watch anymore. Can't afford to buy shows.

Loved this sitcom for the way they weaved comedy and social subjects into a half hour of entertainment. In the 70's I was in 5th grade, and had a teacher who was the spitting image of the lead character. He was also quite eccentric, which made it fun to learn, and looked forward to his class. It was probably the first time having a male teacher, so this made it a memorable time, along with everything else that was part of that decade, both personal and worldly events.🤔🧠🌎👫🏃🏻🚶🏼‍♀️⁉️

I had go straight to the part that took them off the air I already knew about the other stuff but I already knew why it went off the air, Travolta left, his replacement Stephen Shortridge the Southern Sweathog didn't catch on and Gabe Kaplan was only shown at the beginning doing his family stories of his uncles and aunts and this among others was the reason.

I tend to agree. Although I never saw the episode this video talks about, I fail to see why two classmates fighting (regardless of race) or "wrestling on mats" would be a reason to end the sitcom. Your reasons make much more sense.

And sitcoms have a life span after which it gets boring unless you find a way to take it in a new direction that makes sense. Cheers is a show that was great at changing with new characters and goals yet not losing what made it work originally.

Watching re-runs these days, and while not a fan of many sitcoms, this one does stand out. A bit over the top at times, it dealt with issues important to youth and larger society in a not too heavy-handed way. To show diversity in a comedy, stereotypes are called for and with some backstory we learn of concerns of this good mix. They are more alike than dissimilar. I like the nod to Groucho by Gabe Kaplan and Robert Hegyes does a good Harpo. They were studied fans. Ron Palillo as Horshack is perhaps the deepest character. Seen as the weakest, given to uncertain dysfunction, he has the most to prove - if he cares to. His home life shows him to be a sensitive, put upon, good son and brother. His refusal to dissect a frog in biology class is not a surprise; he is ethical and strong. They all back him in the end. My home town high school is ‘James Buchanan’. Some students were referred to as ‘sweat hogs’ in the early 70s - a sexual judgement. I left after only a few months and finished school near Brooklyn.

It eventually became a ritual that most stars from a 70s sit-com HAD to appear in an episode of "The Love Boat" as said stars were on their way out on their sit-com.

I watched every episode when it was on, but even as a teenager I could see the show wasn't that good. I am not saying the acting was bad, the writing was the problem. They had a few decent gags they just repeated dozens of times. It survived for a few years because it caught fire the first few episodes and then Travolta's fame carried it. I often wondered why I tuned in, it was painful to watch sometimes.

Honestly I think they could've benefitted like The Big Bang Theory by introducing a steady gf for each of the Sweathogs. They'd be called a cute group name and everything. It'd be Kelly Woodman for Epstein, Horshack's wife, Verna Jean for Freddie and Vinnie's blonde sweety from the talent show. Heck even Bo could find a gf like Angie, the blonde that got to be a Sweathog for a couple of episodes.

I remember watching this in like sixth grade in my math class cuz the teacher wanted us to watch the episode with gangs cuz a lot of us were starting to mess with that kind of lifestyle. The nostalgia is strong, but I don't think the political issues or a boycott affected much. I was in my 20's and very political at the time, but this show was an escape, not a MASH or All in the Family. I remember zero controversy, never heard about a boycott - and we were not strangers to bussing controversy in NY. I think it died of natural causes - the quality of the episodes declined eventually, as happens to most shows when they finish telling a story and start creating new material - and Travolta becoming a huge movie star meant the character we all tuned in to see had to leave.

It was the last episode of the show since it was canceled. That episode had a happy ending. Both best friends, Washington and Epstein solved their differences and became best friends again. Epstein also got a job, now both guys had a job. Fitting title of that final episode was named: The Breadwinners. They were best friends in real life also, until Robert died of a heart attack years ago.
