Danny Culler was spotting for Dale Earnhardt during the 2001 Daytona 500. That’s powerful enough, but Danny also very nearly quit that gig just two days before. And to hear what happened … it’s a perspective on that incredibly sad weekend I’d never before heard.
Then … Danny serves as Kevin Harvick’s spotter and pilot for the rest of the season, doing double duty at both the Winston Cup and Busch Series levels right alongside the rookie driver.
And … we get some bonus Harry Gant stories.

Man I love hearing old stories from men just like him who've been around long enough to tell them. Back when racing was fun and the country was strong.

@@CC.94 I agree. It’s hard for me to even watch. I find myself watching races from the late 90s early 2000s. That’s what I grew up watching and in my opinion was the best racing days

Nobody talks about this part of Dale. Sometimes you would meet him and he was happy other times he was depressed or mood swings. But Dale was under a lot of pressure regarding Michael. The media and Napa was pressing so hard because Michael losing streak. So Dale felt the pressure being he vouched for him. I think this is why Dale pushed so hard blocking. Dale jr had won already so the pressure was off there. But from my vantage point Dale was more concerned with Michael getting a win to shut up all the press and The negative people within Napa.

Never thought of it that way but it does make perfect sense especially with how loyal he was to people around him/sponsorships, wanting to please backers, etc.

What was Earnhardt thinking holding up the field? I could not believe what he was doing!! If he was racing that day he would still be alive!!
