In the first of what will be two installments of our interview, Gere Kennon remembers the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley and the late, great NASCAR 75 driver Sam Ard.
Gere was the crew chief for both of Sam’s championships and can testify first hand to his talent behind the wheel of a race car, his strength and his ALMOST ALWAYS gentle demeanor and the terrible accident that ended Sam’s driving career.

Love this!! I remember that race with daddy and Dale! We were all so mad! I remember too a lot of times when daddy bandaged those wounds mentioned with a piece of rag and duct tape! 😂 Daddy generally had a gentle spirit and fought most of his battles on the track! Hard to hear about daddy’s wreck and relive that but God touched daddy and we had many more sweet years with him! Thank you for sharing, Rick!

I remember when Sam would come to Savannah Speedway. Got talk to him in the pits. Super nice. Have an autograph book. He signed it Samuel J Ard. Still have it.

Excited for part 2. Gere has been a part of my family in so many ways. Gave Shane first Busch ride, carried me when I broke my back and many more family events. Hell his wife lived at our lake house all my childhood

I remember as a teenager at Hickory Speedway in the late 1970’s seeing Sam’s big red steering wheel! It was huge it looked like it was out of a School bus lol!

I actually remember that too! It must have had to been easy to notice, because I definitely remember that, especially the fact it was red, had those finger grooves in it. I was pretty young, was there in the pits with my dad and uncle, who was running a Limited Sportsman car. Sam Ard was there and I remember that car.

Journalists aren't supposed to have favorites, but in Sam's case, I don't care. He was, is and always will be one of the best to ever drive a race car.

Win, lose, or draw Sam should have took something with him if he needed to and beat Earnhardt's ass. That kind of stuff never went unpunished at our local track. After awhile the problem disappeared because you knew you would get it right back.
Looks realistic #tiktok
