In this installment of our second interview with Larry McReynolds, he talks about his run with Robert Yates Racing and the late, great Davey Allison. The discussion covered everything from McReynolds' decision to make the move from Kenny Bernstein’s team to Robert Yates Racing … to his decision NOT to make the move … then his final decision TO pack up and Bernstein for Yates. It was a move that paid immediate dividends. Allison won five races after Larry Mac came on board in 1991 … and then came an absolutely tumultuous 1992 Winston Cup season.

Inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time to listen to Larry. I was not aware of Tim Brewer’s car offer. I miss those days. Davey Allison, forever my Champion on and off the track.

Caution is out. Larry Thank you for signing your book and my hat at Texas track side in 2005. You really r a Nascar legend and u took the time to talk to me a couple mins a total stranger in private. You are one of the nicest guys I've ever met as a fan. Dale and Davey proud of you from up above.

Man Davy was some kind of special. We never got to see his full potential. How many championships would he have won? No telling. Safe to say Earnhardt would have never won seven.

For Dale's risk, it all comes down to the following year 1994. Could Davey of won? Maybe, but Dale did have hell of a year. Gordon's 4 is more at risk, particularly the first, or Labonte's second.

@@Tcottong I agree. More likely that him and Jeff have some historic championship battles through that back half of the 90s.

Davey had to be such a cool, confident, down to earth sweetheart. For a guy who a got injured so many times and lost his brother and almost his legendary father in 1988 and still remain mostly calm and positive towards everyone just goes how amazing he was. No wonder why Larry and so many others, most importantly his family and friends loved and still misses him to this day.

Wonderful interview and great insight into my most favorite race team #28 Yates and my favorite driver Davey. Larry Mac is an awesome guy and still enjoy his work with FOX. Thank you for this amazing content and all the classy interview. You guys quickly became my favorite source of NASCAR content on the web, even before the first 3 part Podcasts had been uploadad. Thanks again guys! Keep the good stuff coming.

Was there in Pocono in '92 tickets to my 1st race for my bday. Pop and i were over on exit of turn 1 and the car flew up high enough that you saw it over the fans in the infield. -U10

Davey might've became the lead Ford driver in the nineties for NASCAR if he wasn't established in the role already apart from how Mark, Rusty, Bill and Dale Jarrett were being pitched as such in their careers at the time. I'm a little biased when I say this of course, but as much as I respect both Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt would Davey Allison be the third of their "Big Three" between them that actually got the best of 'em on a semi regular basis? Based on everything I've both read and heard about him, Davey really was outside so many conventional benchmarks considering how sincerely kind he was with the fans, so classy in terms of affable PR conduct, so mechanically savvy and technically sharp and being legitimately a generational talent. So much about him was so likeable. He would've been most likely seen in the upper echelons of how many other superstars were regarded. He was and still is beloved by so many people in this world and he'll never be forgotten.

@@danfarris135 Thanks for the shoutout, Dan. I've read on Davey's racing reference page in the comments section that it's possible that the Pocono tumble might've allegedly ruined him or at the very least it definitely affected the second half (Even if they hadn't wrecked at Pocono, it was almost guaranteed if they didn't win the race, they'd have one heck of a points day in the top five considering they were the class of the field. That'd be at least over a hundred points back for them even with the Atlanta crash that ultimately happened. Enough to nab it in spite of the deficit that would be under the overall totals anyway. 'Course with the context of things changing they all would've raced differently with alternate outcomes. Who knows, lol? Might've been scenarios where Davey, Alan and Bill all wrecked on the first lap and the crapshoot for Harry, Kyle and Mark could've been decided by who outran the other in dead heats or who outpaced the other team's mechanical woes) of their '92 season and while some of that may be true, I still think both Larry and Davey had at least twenty plus more victories in 'em maybe even thirty along with at least a single championship if not multiple ones especially combined with Robert Yates' horsepower turnout for their engine program along with the multi car expansions for many organizations that would follow suit as time progressed. Still as an enormous fan, I don't think less of Davey regardless of the stats 'cause he was such an honorable person. His appeal wasn't just in his talent, but his personality of course. Probably would've been Davey and Jeff Gordon virtually going eye-for-eye most of the time for the remainder of the decade.

That '92 season was intense and I remember it like it was yesterday. If you tried to write a script about it they'd send it back for not being believable.

Why doesn't Davey Allison & Larry Mcreynolds not have a movie kinda like Ford vs Ferrari? I love days of thunder, but we need a better more modern stock car movie!

Larry Mack I have a big question I was wondering where you put a spring rubber on the spring can that change the way the spring load is say you put the spring rubber higher on the spring Jeanette change the way it's different zip head to if you put it lower on the spring I understand the concept of the spring rubber that it stiffens it but is there a level of stiffness as you go up the spring or down the spring does it get softer with that spring rubber
@sillygoose2508
@sillygoose2508 2 жыл бұрын
No it's a one way option you can only make a spring stiffer not aware of how to losin it up with widges to soften it up you have to crank the housings for the spring and take the tension off it as to soften it up
