That wreck still brings chills to me, as everyone there that day. They red flagged the race, all motors shut off, and you could have heard a pin drop it was so quiet. We all ran over to that part of the track, and stared in disbelief when Michael was unstrapped, and stood up. It was like a miracle right before our eyes. One of those things in life you don't forget. Never seen a car so destroyed, but the way it disintegrated, it absorbed so much of the energy of impact it spared Michael's life.

It’s sad that it took 32 years to get his side. He’s been wanting to say that for a long time.

I personally never thought it was Robert' s fault. But it sure pointed out that entrance gates on race tracks should not be in that location. If there is a gate at all, it should be near the end of the longest straight-of-way.

I always liked Robert Pressley, seemed like a good dude driving for the under funded teams. and that’s about the most DW thing I’ve heard, glad Robert finally got a chance to tell his side of the story.

I still have the Circle Track magazine from that month with all of the color photo's, and I had watched that race and couldn't believe that Michael survived that wreck, he had an angel on his shoulder that day.

The only wreck that rivals that is the Bodine truck wreck at Daytona.. 2 men that are lucky to be alive..

Look at the Mike Harmon crash at Bristol as he hit the same exit gate that Michael did, almost cut the car in half and he to walked away from it.

I’ve always thought that one was scarier than Waltrips, just not as suspenseful because basically when the car stopped moving dude just stood up and walked away. I still go back and watch that one. Absolutely amazing.

I'd have to say the Don MacTavish crash in the Permatex race at Daytona, in 1969, was worse.

@@davebryant8050 it's not just nascar. A working man with a dream and strong work ethics has a near impossible chance of moving up anymore and any racing organization. Cubic Dollars are the standard practice.

Nothing against Gordon, but I think he set the stage for what was to come in Nascar. If Nascar were to expand into new markets, they needed more young, good-looking, well-spoken drivers. Similar with crew chiefs.

That was 1988. I have rewatched all Busch series races available on you tube that this man raced in and it was either win or wreck someone. On purpose. Dozens and dozens of deliberate wrecks. I’m thinking it’s the reason Alliance got rid of him before season end, tired of repairing car week after week. Watch his last indy raceway park race in the ride, he damn near killed 2 in that one,you could see it in Todd Bodines eyes.

My family and I were there, it was crazy, the place went silent, parents were covering their kids eyes. Truly amazing how that gate broke open. I have a picture with Michael Sunday morning in the infield by the drivers lounge. I was about 10 or 11

It doesn't surprise me that Darrell Waltrip tried to blame Robert for this. Darrell has an extremely bad habit of defending himself or his brother for things they did on track. I remember Texas 1997 when Darrell came down on another driver at the start of the race & caused a big mess. And Darrell had the brilliant idea to say the other driver clipped him... & everyone is just laughing at Darrell... Because the other driver was Johnny Benson & he doesn't wreck anyone! 😆

I have a great still photo of the car laying in a pile, you can see Mike’s helmet under the twisted wreck, then he got up and walk off 😂 can’t believe I watched it happen, we were sitting front strait, turn one

Michael also "walked away" from a ONE car wreck off the track when he was "reportedly" DUI and would not answer the door when the Sheriff arrived to find out what happened. Shows exactly the character of the guy so I will believe Mr. Pressley.
