Welcome to science at home in this experiment we will be burning steel wool using a 9volt battery. In this experiment we use a 9 volt battery to heat up the wires in a bundle of steel wool to the point that it burns. The combustion of the steel wool keeps the burning reaction going until the heat is lost or all of the steel wool has been burnt. At the end of this episode you will be able to explain what happens when the steel wool is burnt, why the steel wool burns and be able to replicate this experiment at home.

A spark from the grinder lit up some wire wool on a bench about 6 feet away, behind me - that could have been the end of my workshop but thankfully caught it in time, I now always keep it safely in a box.

Fun episode! "An alloy is a metal made by mixing two or more metallic elements..." Except carbon is not metallic. Also, it's separated, not seperated. :)

+Stephen Abbott Smelting using carbon to reduce iron oxides, results in an alloy called pig iron which retains too much carbon to be called steel. Some of the carbon is then removed in future steps to create steel but much of the carbon can remain depending on the alloy.

What is the final product from the oxidation? Iron oxide has a density far less than both steel or iron yet the mass of the material increased with no change in the volume. How can this be accounted for?

Would the steel wool oxidize the same way under water?
@TheSciGuys
@TheSciGuys 8 жыл бұрын
+Gawn Bonaparte Well this reaction wouldn't occur underwater because of the lack of oxygen. You would need a chemical that produces oxygen in the reaction to continue the combusiton, like how we put the sparklers underwater in one of our experiments. If you are refering to the oxidation of the steel wool by rusting then you would probably end with different types of steel oxide.

+Sarah Khaled Ohh man that is a tough topic. We're starting up a new series in the new year where we talk about subjects that may not have at home experiments. We can try and answer it in one of those but we will do our best to get a video up on that topic eventually.

So glad I didn't know about this in the 4th grade. Went through a science phase where I experimented without asking😂 My "parental guardian" was pissed when she started finding my hidden projects around the house. She stopped buying me books after that and refused to let my family gift them as well. Had to borrow library cards and hide them. JW's lose their minds if you try to learn outside their community

Why are there sparks flying around?
@TheSciGuys
@TheSciGuys 8 жыл бұрын
+Danish Javed As combustion occurs in the metal occasionally bits of hot metal and other products can jump off. Those are the sparks.
