Greg actually did confirm a Toa of Gravity is a planet-cracker. Even though in our real world physics, gravity is an insanely weak force - so much that it wouldn’t allow for any kind of telekinetic control of anything - in the BIONICLE universe, a Toa of Gravity has the power to fully control gravity and things with gravity, to the extend that they are able to fix a chunk of a world in place, while the rest of the planet keeps rotating. This would then cause said planet to crack! Although, we don’t know if they have enough elemental energy in one full charge to be able to fix the object for enough time for it to happen. Or how far, I guess, their power's reach extends with the amount of energy they can use in a given timeframe. We also don’t know if fixing a super tiny object might have the same effect, either. Hmmm, any physics major able to answer that? If I fix a grain of dirt in place that’s some ways down underground among other dirt, which it is tightly packed together with, what would happen? Perhaps nothing and the dirt would just slide around it?

For real. I'm just loving the fact that the Bionicle community is old enough now that we're starting to be able to have these more mature discussions about the science, philosophy and other deeper aspects of the lore 13 years after the series was cancelled. I doubt Lego, Faber, Hapka, Farshtey or anyone else involved in the creation and development of the series had any clue just how much impact these stories would have on an entire generation, or how loyal we would be.

Rahiwatching: "We'll also be setting the thickness of this layer of iron at 1cm thick. This may seem small..." Me knowing that the average thickness of plate armor is between 1-3mm: "uh oh." Even when being more conservative w/ the numbers by using 1mm instead of 1cm, that still leads to some absurd (if slightly more believable) results since they're only reduced by a factor of 10. Either way, based on these numbers, it's amazing that Gali wasn't able to do more damage to the GSR itself when she destroyed Karzahni, let alone Icarax and the other Toa Nuva.
@theknowledgetower208

Yeah, I debated for a while on exactly how thick to make it given the quote from Greg left a lot of wiggle room, but I settled on 1cm after finding another Greg quote that stated it also created shards of metal that flew out in all directions. The additional metal in the disk thickness tried to account for that, but I left that out of the video itself for time. I've probably still over-estimated a bit, but even being within a factor of 10 is still sufficient given the unknowns involved here. And as you say, its still a very, very large amount of energy either way.

@@orderlysummit3449This is actually true given that it's confirmed by Greg. It would be similar to Nuhvok-kal blackhole but likely bigger, though it would mean that the Toa of gravity wouldn't likely survive the blackhole as they would be crushed by their own power along with sucking everything in it. This is probably a in-universe explanation for why Toa of gravity cannot absorb their power unlike most types of Toa, because if they do they are essentially increasing of a gravitional pull around themselves and would become so dense that they collapse themselves into a blackhole.

I guess the statement that Toa of Plasma turn into miniature suns when they use their Nova wasn't an understatement. Given that Nova Blasts all seem to be about the same size, I would guess that those with more volatile elements (Fire, Light, etc) contain however much elemental energy it would take to produce a blast of the same size as the iron disc. And Icarax took one of these to the face and walked it off.

Yeah, especially when considering that Toa of Plasma's power is much hotter than a Toa of fire, due to being basically superheated gas that can melt & vaporized anything in their path as a opposed to burning out. As well as being even more resistant to heat on top of having their eyes shield from bright light. Though unfortunately this also means that they can't control the temperature of the heat they produce unlike their Ta matoran brethren, since its always at that highest melting point. Another thing to note that if a Toa of Plasma pulls a nova blast, theorically it would definitely be much hotter & volatile than a fire nova blast(which can already boil water to the point of turning it to vapor). It would be more equivalent to a miniature supernova, essentially glassing the surface of the planet. Similarly to the method how the Covenant did to the UNSC's planets in Halo, but more of a bomb than just firing a stream of Plasma at it.

I’m fairly certain Toa of Iron can also control non-protodermic iron. And if they absorbed metal from Spherus Magna, they’d probably start producing non-protodermic metal too, right? It’s a force of nature, a universal one, that also exist outside of the MU, after all. It is possible that somehow the GBs allowed managed to make the MU so only protodermic equivalents of the element were created within it when elemental powers were used in there, while outside it would be regular matter instead.

I'd like to ask for a recalculation based on the energy elements. The reason being that it's implied toa don't create matter but manipulate what's in the environment (see Nokama in the novels). That would make this calculation a drastic overshoot if that's the case.
@theknowledgetower208
@theknowledgetower208 Жыл бұрын
While it's true that Toa have been shown manipulating the elements that are already there (which is likely the easier and less energy intensive way of doing things for them), they can definitely create matter out of elemental energy too. An example that comes to mind where this is definitely the case is when Lewa was teleported into space by Makuta Teridax alongside Helryx etc. and he created air pockets around their heads so they could all breathe. That was definitely creation of matter, given there was no air around him within range to manipulate. The description of Gali performing her Nova blast does show that she incorporated water from her surroundings into the blast, so it would certainly form a part of it, but given that the amount of an element in the surroundings would vary with time and location, there wasn't really any way to include it in the video.
@enderking1525
@enderking1525 Жыл бұрын
@The Knowledge Tower there's also another factor to consider, in that chemical reactions and converting available elements by changing the amount of protons is also likely less energy intensive than creating matter from scratch. Point being, I think a light, fire, or gravity nova blast would be a better measure for how much energy is used
@theknowledgetower208
@theknowledgetower208 Жыл бұрын
@@enderking1525 I do get where you are coming from here, but the purpose of the video was to take what is said in story and apply real world science to it to see what would happen, and I think I have done that in the method used. The story states that Toa can use their store of elemental energy to create, manipulate or absorb their element, so an energy to matter conversion is the simplest interpretation of that for the “create” part of their powers. When the Toa create their element rather than manipulate what is already there, it is described like it has been made out of nowhere, rather than there being some sort of exchange of one element into another. This again fits in with the Lewa in space example, as in space there would be very little in the way of other matter for Lewa to convert into air, other than the bodies of the beings that got teleported alongside him into the void. Some sort of chemical reaction could be used for some of the elemental powers as you say, at least to an extent. Fire is really just the oxidization of a fuel with heat after all, and water could be created from free floating hydrogen and oxygen in the air if there was enough of it around, but that doesn’t work for all the elemental powers. Iron for example, would be very difficult to make from chemical reactions alone, as you would really need some metal to start off with anyway. This would be less of a problem in the purely Protodermis based MU where the raw material for everything is readily available all around, but we know that Toa can still create their element when outside of the MU and sources of Protodermis are hard to come by. However, let’s say that they don’t create any new mass, and instead they convert one type of atom into another like in your comment, as it’s a fun thought experiment to play out. We can’t just make new protons/neutrons/electrons out of nowhere to add to existing atoms in the surroundings to change one atom into another, as that would just be the same as creating the desired element out of energy like in my method, just with extra steps. So instead, we would have to get them from somewhere else. There are two processes in physics where you can convert one type of atom into another: fusion (where you fuse two lighter elements together to get a heavier one) and fission (where you split a heavier element apart to make lighter ones). With these two methods, you could create any atom you wished from the ones around you, but both of these processes not only take energy to do (though not as much as to create matter from scratch), they also create a lot of energy in the process (well, mostly. Iron fusion actually consumes energy rather than creating it, but let’s not get into that much detail in a KZfaq comment). To have the elemental powers work in this way would mean that they would be creating tiny nuclear reactions all around as they did so, which would lead up to a colossal amount of energy being released for any decent amount of elemental power usage, so its not going to be helpful for the Toa if the use of their powers causes nuclear explosions! Ultimately though, the reason why I didn’t look into the energy based powers for this video was that there were so many different variables to consider that it would make coming up with a figure for the energy output almost impossible. A light nova blast for example - light comes in a lot of different wavelengths, which ones would be included in the nova? Each wavelength represents a different energy level after all. Or fire - how hot would a nova be? Fire is not one uniform heat after all, how would I choose how hot it should be? With the energy to matter method, a number could be found in a simple enough way to fit into a 10ish minute video in an understandable and (hopefully) entertaining way, so that’s why I did it this way.
@enderking1525
@enderking1525 Жыл бұрын
@@theknowledgetower208 I agree with many of your points, but I do want to bring up that we do have a workable estimate for the temperatures involved. Greg himself said that all the water within the blast radius would have been vaporized by a fire nova. and considering the context, I think its safe to assume he meant near-instantly. That gives us a pretty good guess for a minimum to work with. If I'm not mistaken, I think heat follows the inverse-square law, meaning we could also factor in some variation going from the epicenter to the outer edge of the blast radius, which would need to be at minimum 100C, but probably more as we need the water at this range to flash rather than simply boil.
@theknowledgetower208
@theknowledgetower208 Жыл бұрын
@@enderking1525 I’ve just had a check of the Nova blast page on BS01 and sure enough, there is now a section on the effects of different nova blast types that includes fire. From the version history page, it looks like it was added a couple of months after I did this video, always cool to see that even so may years later people are still finding interesting new information from the Greg archive! The quote in question gives us a couple of interesting points, the first being what you said in your last comment, that a fire nova would vaporize the water around it if set off underwater. The second is that (like I guessed at in the end of my video) the Great Beings did indeed limit the extent of Nova Blasts inside the MU, meaning that my radius calculation from the video would only be valid within the MU and a new one would be needed for outside the MU. This new one would probably have a bare minimum radius of 200 miles (321.869km), that way it would fit with the “hundreds of miles” extent of the quote. That’s enough new information for me to think a new calculation can be done to supplement the one in my video, so let’s get to it. For this I’ll do two calculations, one with the MU radius and one with the outside of the MU radius. For both, let’s say its Jaller Mahri setting it off deep enough underwater that the entire extent of the nova stays within the water. For the ease of the calculation, we will also assume that liquid Protodermis and water have the same properties. Now, an energy-based nova would most likely go out in all directions rather than creating a flat disk like with the matter-based elements described in the video, so for a blast within the MI that would give us a sphere of water with a 32606m radius for the blast zone, with a mass of water equal to 1.447692553x10^17 kg. Water in the deep ocean is around 4 degrees Celsius on average, so lets say that out water sphere starts at this temperature. Water has a specific heat capacity of 4.18 joules per gram per degree centigrade, so it will take 5.809300677x10^22 joules to heat that much water up to 100 degrees C. Water then needs a further 2260 joules per gram when at 100 degrees C to turn into water vapour, so that means our nova will need to pump a further 3.27178517x10^23 joules into the water within the blast zone. Adding those both together, we get a total bare minimum energy needed to vaporize that much water of 3.852715237x10^23 joules, or the equivalent of the energy output of the entire sun for 0.01 seconds. A good bit less than the 60.66 seconds of the calculation in the video, but still an energy output on the scale of a star! Re-doing the calculation but for the outside of the MU radius, that gives a minimum energy needed of 3.706054401x10^26 joules, or the same output of the entire sun for 0.98 seconds. Given that this would be the bare minimum of a fire nova (as it is only the minimum energy needed to vaporize that much water, we have no idea how much hotter than this it would actually go) I think this fits in well with the mass-based calculation from my video, with this being the lower end of the scale of what they put out and the one in the video being closer to the middle. Given the Greg quotes also hint at the matter based elements like water are also limited within the MU, then the higher end of the scale as to the maximum amount of energy a nova blast could contain must be even higher than in my video!
