The Science of Preventing (and Reversing) Dementia

For so long, we’ve been told that memory loss and dementia are just a normal part of aging. Though we now know it doesn’t have to be that way, and that there are many measures we can proactively take to avoid cognitive decline with aging, there are still 6 million people in the US who have Alzheimer’s or pre-Alzheimer’s and that number is expected to rise to 15 million by 2060. But emerging research is helping us look at new ways to treat and even prevent devastating diseases like this, giving people a newfound sense of hope. Today’s guest on The Doctor’s Farmacy, Dr. Marwan Sabbagh, has spent the majority of his life pioneering this field. From the age of 8, he knew he wanted to be a doctor, and just ten years later at 18, he began researching Alzheimer’s.
Dr. Sabbagh is a board-certified neurologist and considered one of the leading experts in Alzheimer’s and dementia. He is on the editorial board for the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and BMC Neurology and is now editor in chief of Neurology and Therapy and is the author of The Alzheimer’s Answer: Reduce Your Risk and Keep Your Brain Healthy, and The Alzheimer’s Prevention Cookbook: 100 Recipes to Boost Brain Health. Dr. Sabbagh’s latest book, Fighting for My Life: How to Thrive in the Shadow of Alzheimer’s, was just released.

Great discussion. I used to farm: calves, sheep, horses - the veterinary surgeon’s first action was to question/examine the CAUSE. I could never understand why doctors didn’t do the same. The furthest they would go would be ask who might have spread such and such an infection. Rosemary aged 75

I dont know what's going on, alzheimers and dementia are the worse diseases, I'm sad to say mostly all of my friends' grandparents and some of parents all have some sort of dementia. My college friends, colleagues at work ,pple from the community all have stories that someone in thier families have dementia as much as today. They are very hard to take care of and you never want to give up on them because they are a family member and you have deep love for them. However when I was a kid you would never hear of family friends who have dementia, what going on , what is new in our environment that so many pple have this disease .

Don’t pick on gene kits. A person has to sign additional permission slips in order to get their gene status not only on the APOE gene but the BRCA gene (risk of breast cancer) too. This allows the person time to ask themselves if they really want to know. It’s an electro i signature for each gene.

I find interesting is that if you take these expensive tests to find out you have Alzheimer's or even just a cognitive test and they say yes you are having Alzheimer's symptoms, then what? Then you go on a Mediterranean diet and start playing lots of puzzles, reading more, but couldn't you've just done all that instead of getting all the tests? Because you pretty much know when you're coming into Alzheimer's with your family members letting you know of your memory loss so just take the only measures medicine has so far is the Mediterranean diet. I've heard any medicines they might give you they don't really help that much anyway

It's well said, treat for achieving health, not to clear diseases. And first thing can be brought into today's system is use common sense of health care providers, communicating with the patient/customer for relevant info they can provide which can give an insight. But we are so eagerly awaiting the battery of tests n reports, artificial intelligence only is used more. This type of an approach not only costs an astronomical expense in tests n treatment but simple important n obvious signs n symptoms are overlooked for want of that B 12, B6, Iron, Calcium etc in thr serum. Initial years of medical education is concentrated on signs n symptoms of those deficiencies

Wow...so it seems like we have no clue about how to remain healthy. High fat, low fat, high carb, low carb, gluten free, etc. etc.

So this doc says Mediterranean diet pre MCI and then switch to Keto. Dr. Bredesen’s book says keto. Which is it? I’m totally confused now.

Keto in my opinion is not a health diet it is modified Atkins- try and nutritarian diet with more fiber vitamins and minerals 😊

Ketones are preferentially used by the brain even in the presents of glucose. Stephen Cunnane demonstrated this on multiple occasions.

I need advice. I'm a generally healthy 26 year old - I have excruciating pain in my jaw, especially upon chewing food. I'm in pain everyday. I've been to two different dentists, x-rays, radiologist says I have advanced stage Arthritis in my left bone so bad the bone is eroding from the left side joint. Basically I've tried to find drs to evaluate me. The two dentists say I need surgery but It's not in their realm of practice, they can't help me. Orthopedic surgeon here when I went to talk to them they raise their eye brow and say they extract wisdom teeth but they don't do anything with jaws. A different doctor says he'll see me 3 months away and there's a huge up front pay expected. I'm literally stucck at a dead end. I feel like crying. The pain is a struggle

Destany- where do you live? Im so sorry you are in pain. Thats the worst. I use to have a lot of pain in my jaw joint. I found a wonderful Osteopath! He worked on my jaw naturally/no surgery!! And cranial sacral work. Sounds like maybe your jaw is out of alignment, causing arthritis and pain. If you live in Florida, I could give you my guys number. He has helped me so so much and is great. If you don't, maybe you can find a good natural Osteopath near your location. It can really help! Acupuncture has also helped. :) Sending prayers your way. Hope you get the proper help soon. 💙

An Epigenetic or Functional orthodontist may also really , really help. They care about your skull bones, jaw, face bones, joints, etc. All being healthy and in the best alignment for your best pain free self. If everything is properly in place, it should help or hault any arthritis.

I live far from Florida. I live in the Midwestern region. Thank you for your advice. My primary care nurse practitioner is working on my referral to a big hospital 5 hours away, she's just waiting on their response to see if they'll approve to see me. In the mean time, I have an appointment with an ear, nose, throat doctor. He may not be able to help me much but he can order an MRI of my jaw to see the soft tissue/cartilage to see if it needs reconstructed surgically. The x-ray shows the bone erosion from the joint. I need something to get pain relief. Over the counter pain relief isn't working. My left side jaw is swollen.

Don't even know how it started. The radiologist seemed surprised to see it in someone young. The dentist thought I had some type of injury to the jaw to make an impact that's how arthritis settled in it. But i don't remember ever having an injury to my face. They all seem flabbergasted like they've never seen it in a young person the circumstances.

It just started hurting out of the blue one day and it's been chronic for 3 months, I briefly mentioned it to my dentist about my jaw I really didn't know what is wrong with it. That's when they thought it's TMJ. I went to another dentist the pain got over baring that's when they caught it on x-ray and there's said advanced Arthritis. So the pain is very bad I have a hard time eating and my weights dropping too far but the pain does go at bay when I don't move the jaw. Eating is very painful. The pain is so bad I'll do anything for it to stop. I'm not a complainer at all I'm usually a cheery person. It's taking a toll
