I found something interesting: it's a gun barrel attachment that turns it's propellant gasses into a pretty powerful vortex ring. I also saw a vortex cannon using a subwoofer to drive the air. So then I thought back to this video and it somehow clicked together. Lucio is shooting vortex rings from a beastly speaker.

I just want to re-analyze this a little. 1. We are assuming Lucio's "projectile" is traveling and hitting, target instantly and transferring all energy (in 1 second)...essentially a point blank explosion. However this is not really the case, Lucio's projectiles clearly have travel time and are "absorbed" on impact. 2. We are assuming Lucio is ONLY firing sound waves/shock waves, even though these are normally invisible to the naked eye unless viewed in slow motion. However Lucio's projectile not only moves pretty slow, but also quite visible and GREEN. It must be more than JUST a sound wave. My theory. Lucio is firing a "medium" in addition to sound, Something much denser than air. When Lucio fires his gun he is firing this liquid/medium while also blasting sound into it. The amount of energy required to rupture organs with sound is significantly lowered when the medium sound is moving through is denser. A small explosive going off underwater is more than enough to rupture organs .....much less energy than an airstrike. Also as the shock wave is moving through a medium faster and with greater ease...would further reducie the required energy. needs some polish, but that would make more sense than a explosion going off as he fires.

While it was an amusing video, you completely threw the entire concept of pitch and tone out of the window. See, everything, including people, have a frequency at which their physical structure vibrates. This is it's Resonance Frequency. Creating a sound that can match the structure (or in this case, person's) Resonance frequency destabilizes the molecular structure, causing all kinds of fun, catastrophic damage. it's why people can break a wine glass with just their voice. Volume doesn't matter. The right pitch, and you can cause some serious damage. You just have to know what that pitch actually is and you're in.

As someone who mains McCree and Lucio I'll have to say that the sound gun is actually weaker than a 9mm bullet since McGree does far better damage.

Sound can be focused like a laser, though. That should decrease the energy required to generate a damaging wave.

You can also find that much energy in the bullet case as the bullet is being fired since it's the pressure wave of expanding gas as the gun powder is being sublimated that imparts the energy into the 9mm slug, which works well since the slug doesn't have to work against the inverse square law and instead only has to deal with gravity and air drag.

Though I respect looking at the raw numbers on how something like this could work, I think it ignores one of the more important aspects of sound that not also explains how the gun can damage opponents, but also how it can heal allies; frequency. There's been numerous studies looking into how certain frequencies of sound can in fact speed up the rate at which cells repair themselves, which is exaggerated in the healing effects, but can also disrupt functions at different frequencies, much like a singer breaking a glass by finding the sympathetic pitch that causes it to resonate and subsequently shatter.

I'm probably not the first person to mention this but loudness isn't really necessary. All you need is the correct resonating frequency and you could rupture every organ in a person's body.

I thought I remember seeing something similar to this on Vsauce but it was with shouts from Skyrim and the explanation I received was that the sound would have to be so loud the shouter and the other person would actually get pulled together and basically create a blackhole or something like that. Seeing how Lucio's right click sends a shockwave that sends enemies flying, wouldn't he basically be creating blackholes every time he fired that round?

I like this since I have a basic understanding of the math and science. And too an extent understand the stuff I have no real idea about since you explain it so it's like revising and learning more about random shit and I love it! :D

The main problem I see with this is the fact that Lucio's gun is strictly directional, while the sounds we know how to make are strictly omnidirectional. While sound is usually much less damaging than its source, it is important to remember that that source is generating that sound in all directions at once. If sound could be generated such that it only traveled in a cone (btw, this is probably impossible, idk though, I'm not a scientist) then much less energy would be needed at the source to generate lethal waves of sound. I feel that, at this point, I should also remind everyone that this is a game where missiles pass straight through team-mates to hit opponents on the other side, then impart no force on said team-mates when detonating, even when the team-mate and the explosion are immediately adjacent.
