I always thought this same approach should be done for archeology. Good recreations of ancient cultures are rare. I enjoy watching good attempts in movies even though they pay for less historic consultation that I would. There are Turkestani trinkets and baubles passed off as Anatolian jewelry in Troy and southeast Asian textiles passed off Babylonian and Bactrian in Alexander. Just sayin...

Hiding Ceolophysis's feet behind the mud piles is such a mood. It just made me laugh because that's exactly how I used to draw dinosaurs, or literally any animal or character because I had so much trouble drawing feet, so it's amusing knowing an actual talented production company used the same trick, even if for a different reason.

The Scarlet One To be honest, anything can be considered monsters because of our strong perception of fear. I don’t see what the problem is portraying animals as monsters for the sake of entertainment. At the same time, are we just going to treat animals like dolphins as kind-hearted and purely benevolent when they are perhaps one of the most cleverly sadistic animals known currently? That is more psychopathic and monstrous than animalistic. I’m not kidding, there’s reports of Dolphins killing innocent people, and they do it coordinately. When you think about it, when do we really draw the line between animal and monster?

For it's time you have to give it credit for being incredibly up to date and even getting some things spot on. The use of scientifically informed speculation is something I'll always applaud because it helps to bring these animals to life and can help advance the field. If you then get it wrong that's just how it is in science but better to take a risk and fail than to not. Also of course back then we used to know way less about the behavior of these animals so you had to speculate to fill in the gaps.

It's great that someone on KZfaq is finally doing this layout of an analysis, rather than just giving a blanket "not as accurate as it should be." I can't wait for the next few episodes! One thing that should have been brought up was Coelophysis' sleep schedule. The program only ever shows them in daytime, when the relative size of their scleral rings suggests they would have been more nocturnal. EDIT: I was completely wrong on that end. Coelophysis apparently had terrible night vision. Thanks to Cherry Jester for the correction.

New blood is such a good episode. It takes places at the end of a mass extiction, yet it's feeling is not a "End of an Era" kind of mood. It is exciting, as throughout the episode, you can feel anticipation build up. "This is the begining of something grand!"
@bkjeong4302

New Blood takes place well before the End-Triassic Mass Extinction, and the downfall of the rauisuchians was absolutely nothing like what is depicted here (they were actually better-adapted for hot, arid climates than dinosaurs were, and said climates were something that happened during the height of the Late Triassic, not at the end of it).

@@ThemagpieBird734 The important part is that they were better-suited for surviving harsh droughts than dinosaurs (meaning that the ENTIRE PLOT of New Blood should be the other way around). That’s why there were only smaller dinosaurs outside of high-latitude regions during the Triassic (when you take continental drift into account). The thing dinosaurs were better at was surviving very cold conditions, but this only became an advantage during the end-Triassic Mass Extinction when a worldwide volcanic winter set in; it didn’t give them an inherent advantage without said mass extinction.

@@bkjeong4302 yes but how exactly? Did they use less water or were more energy efficient? The only way I think the dinosaurs could be hampered in arid environments was that some of them may have had feathers in the triassic period and even then modern desert birds and mammals still had filaments.

"The Real T-Rex with Chris Packham." Released january-2018. A feathered rex, with their tiny arms having a usage in their juvenile form and perhaps most notably, no bellowing roar. Instead, we get a low frequency rumble that sends shivers down your spine and gets worse the closer the T-rex gets.

I've also loved this series since it came out, but I was 30 at the time...I bought the DVD set & still watch it regularly...the DVDs still play perfectly after all this time too! This is still the best CG dinosaurs outside of a major motion picture, inaccuracies or not. I noticed a lot of the behavior problems too, but still very much enjoy the series...There was one episode that was made after the main 6 called Allosaurus. That was actually the first one I bought & watched...you should cover all the episodes...

My wife and I went to the Petrified Forest in Arizona a couple months ago and definitely watched this episode of Walking With Dinosaurs a couple times in preparation :) The Placerias being nearly extinct is consistent with the lone Placerias site you mention. Also, a single pterosaur jaw has been found at Petrified Forest, which was reconstructed as a Peteinosaurus-like animal: www.nps.gov/pefo/learn/ornithodiran.htm I'm sure you already knew that, but I'm just throwing it in anyways. Thanks for the video and I look forward to watching the rest!

And of course everything else about it is amazing. For me the greatest thing about WWD was how it enabled me to feel exactly what it would be like to stand among those creatures. The movie "Titanic" similarly was like experiencing the sinking in person. We do not know what the archaic animals of ancient times looked like, & there could have been much variation, so no quibble with the presentations in WWD.

The walking with collection was a big influence in my childhood and to this day in my opinion is the best Prehistory documentary ever made, despite some scientific facts being outdated. The animation was revolutionary at the time, and every detail so well done I can’t say how many times I’ve rewatched the show.
