The region of Galilee gets a lot of attention in the New Testament. Jesus spends most of his ministry walking from town to town around the shoreline of the Sea of Galilee. But what is the character of this region? What does archaeology tell us about the towns that were inhabited in Jesus’ day? This episode examines the archaeology of the towns of Magdala, Capernaum, Tiberius, Nazareth, and Sepphoris.

0:47 isn't this a bit Christian-centric though? I get it, birth-region of the most (second) important person in the two biggest religions of today, but there really are so many interesting historical sites.
@Cor6196
@Cor6196 3 жыл бұрын
I tend to agree with your fundamental critique, but I would argue that without Jesus to focus on, this video - and indeed any video or book about the Galilee - would attract the interest of those who live in the region but not the immense curiosity of archeologists and historians and millions of Christians. In other words, no matter what the inherent interest of the Galilee might be, any information about it that isn’t “Christian-centric” would attract little interest because most people in the world wouldn’t recognize even the name of the place. There’d be a huge “Meh!” and a comparatively small audience. So the bias you point to is basic to this video, its sine qua non.
@daddyleon
@daddyleon 3 жыл бұрын
@@Cor6196 I also mostly agree with what you said, lol. I didn't mean to suggest that there's be an equal interest (let alone justified) if this wasn't Jesus' region. But just that mere fact doesn't really make it "home to some of the most exciting archeological discoveries of history". Though...now that I think of it...that statement was so full of subjective and soft qualifiers, I might well have overreacted. It's not like he said: top 10 or 20 most important/impactful/surpising/enlightening, though it might've felt like that to me. So I guess I'll retract my criticism, thanks!
@varana
@varana 3 жыл бұрын
The way I understood this: Because of its importance for esp. Christian history, the region gets an extraordinate amount of attention, and that led to some very interesting discoveries. You could probably get similar results elsewhere but many other regions don't get that focus, and so fewer discoveries.

in 70 ad the Romans destroyed the Jewish temple and ended the relative freedom they had in Judea, leaving a much smaller community of Jews in the land. Although the final nail in the coffin came in 135 ad because of the Bar Kosiba revolt. Temples were still built, but much less frequently, for a much smaller group of people.

Hopefully this comment will not be deleted as my comments comparing scripture with scripture get deleted much. Here is what is interesting about Galilee! We are still dealing with the ramifications of what Solomon established to this very day! { 1 Kings 11:1 KJV } But king *Solomon LOVED many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites;* { 1 Kings 11:2 KJV } *Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, YE SHALL NOT GO INTO THEM, NEITHER SHALL THEY COME INTO YOU:* for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: *SOLOMON CLAVE UNTO THESE IN LOVE.* { 1 Kings 11:4 KJV } For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and *his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.* { 1 Kings 11:5 KJV } *For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.* { 1 Kings 11:6 KJV } And *SOLOMON DID EVIL evil in the sight of the LORD, AND WENT NOT FULLY AFTER THE LORD,* as did David his father. { 1 Kings 11:7 KJV } *Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon.* { 1 Kings 11:8 KJV } And likewise did he for all his strange wives, *which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.* Molech, is associated with BAAL later and Molech and Moloch is the same in scripture. Molech is associated with CHILD SACRIFICE! Still going on today! { Amos 5:26 KJV } *But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch* and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves. { Acts 7:43 KJV } *Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan,* figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon. The beginning of the carnal kingdom! WHEN? { Matthew 21:42 KJV } Jesus saith unto them, *Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected,* the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? *{ Matthew 21:43 KJV } Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.* Asking the right questions is of utmost importance! WHEN DID THE BUILDERS REJECT THE STONE? { 1 Samuel 8:5 KJV } And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: *now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.* { 1 Samuel 8:7 KJV } *And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: FOR THEY HAVE NOT REJECTED THEE, BUT THEY HAVE REJECTED ME, THAT I SHOULD NOT REIGN OVER THEM.* { 1 Samuel 8:10 KJV } And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king. 1 Samuel 8:11-18 ( Samuel tells them all the things a king would do and that is what Solomon did ) { 1 Samuel 8:19 KJV } *Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;* { 1 Samuel 8:20 KJV } *That we also may be like all the nations;* and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles. *The same Lord who spoke this to Solomon:* { 1 Kings 11:9 KJV } And *the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel,* which had appeared unto him twice, { 1 Kings 11:10 KJV } And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: *but he kept not that which the LORD commanded.* { 1 Kings 11:11 KJV } *Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon,* Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, *I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.* *The same Lord that spoke that Solomon also spoke this here:* { Matthew 21:42 KJV } Jesus saith unto them, *Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected,* the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? *{ Matthew 21:43 KJV } Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.* Did Solomon turn? It's story time! Once upon a time there was a certain king who stood in opposition to God and God's will seeking to kill or destroy a chosen servant of God. *His name was. Well let us read!* { Matthew 2:12 KJV } And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to *HEROD,* they departed into their own country another way. { Matthew 2:13 KJV } And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and *flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.* { Matthew 2:14 KJV } When he arose, *he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:* { Matthew 2:15 KJV } And was there *UNTIL THE DEATH OF HEROD:* that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. *Wait a minute, let me start the story again:* Once upon a time there was a certain king who stood in opposition to God and God's will seeking to kill or destroy a chosen servant of God. His name was, well let us read! { 1 Kings 11:40 KJV } *SOLOMON sought therefore to kill Jeroboam.* And *Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt,* unto Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt *UNTIL THE DEATH OF SOLOMON.* I cover on my channel just how deep it goes comparing scripture with scripture. ( Solomon lost the 10 tribes of Israel whom Jesus came for and Solomon gave God's land of Galilee away and Jesus spoke from the sea for the lost sheep of house of Israel. Solomon sent ships on the sea for carnal merchandise rather then sharing God's spiritual merchandise. Thus why Jesus taught from a ship on the sea of Galilee ).

I was raised Baptist, but attend a small Mennonite church where only straight men are leaders, women are only allowed to teach boys under 12. Men teach boys 13 and up. Women cover there heads in services and dress modestly, no pants. Families sit together in services. We do have a piano, but only The whole church sings, no choir or solos. I am a graduate of Dallas theological seminary and have be a guest of the pulpit a lot. They have ask me to come on staff several times but I have turned them down. I have a good retirement so I only volunteer to help anyway I can. This congregation is about 25 years old a split from something else? The congregation is mostly younger families, I am one of the oldest. Hard working and very conservative people, two families work for me on my farm. We can and Butcher for our Church food pantry, that is open to everyone. I also helped build a small furniture factory. Some of the people work at a small nursing home in our town. Marriage is between one women and one man any thing else is sin.
