The Sea Ranch (Hong Kong)

The Sea Ranch is a 1970's luxury residential development in a remote area of Hong Kong's Lantau Island. After initial boom, it experienced fall in prices, decline in occupancy and mismanagement. In 2008, "TimeOut Hong Kong" compared it to a city hit by a neutron bomb. It wrote: "The southwest Lantau ghost town is shabby, crumbling, and crushingly depressing to visit."
I made this documentary to explore what the developer's initial vision was, what The Sea Ranch was like when it opened, what went wrong and what it is today.
This is a Documentary Film Production project completed as part of the 2014 Master of Journalism program at the University of Hong Kong, under the guidance and supervision of Ruby Yang. The project was completed in three weeks.

This is ace! I was absolutely fascinated by this place when I lived in HK, would spend hours researching its history. Would have loved to have made it over there from the Island. Really interesting piece, well done guys :)

We went past the Sea Ranch on our way to Macau with the catamaran and I got curious about the white buildings on the island. And now I know the history. I got quite fascinated by it. Thank you so much for the video!

Most of my childhood memories was from Sea Ranch..... I remember those sofas, the carpet patterns.... I spend so much time in that swimming pool.... learning to swim... and I remember the helicopter playground..... being my age.... I should know by now that nothing can last forever, but its still sad seeing the place in that state..... thanks for making the video, and bringing back so much happy memories....

Dear Nancy, thank you very much for your kind note. Yes, that is a dog corpse and it has been there for a long time. We really enjoyed making the mini documentary. thanks for this documentary. are the parts that are left rotting the clu house and the residential buildings are fine? the buildings do look nice from the outside. I wonder how they are inside. never even heard of this place all my life! thanks for sharing this!
