Me too. And 'Night Train' is sooooooo funky... Actually most of the grooves on here remind me of Porcupine Tree, 2002 onwards??? Only problem is , This is a couple of years before that type of PT groove that we all like??? Not so original Steven Wilson - Gavin Harrison.(you ain't the Only Ones that can do that dirty Groove. And that's what your famous for???😂😂😂

As with plenty of other comments below - I bought "Do It Yourself" immediately when it came out. I had the Seahorses T-shirt. I've played "Love Is The Law" and "I Want You To Know" in bands. I always thought this album was stored in John Squire's loft under lock & key. I found it 24 years after the first album, finally! Thanks for the upload!

When i see Seahorses content i always read " Squire did this or Squire can do that, he was a genius". Well perhaps he was in some ways, but I like the Seahorses mostly for the vocals which are outstanding and i havent heard another voice like it. Helme was just as important to that band, and i cannot imagine the Seahorses without his voice. Sad that he, and other discarded members, were not able to form their own band and go on to make some impact on the music scene. Yorkshire forever

Brown was/is a crap singer and is legendary. Helme has a voice that is night and day more accomplished than the vocals on The Stone Roses. Still wouldn't change the sound of the Roses for anything, but to call Helme a crap singer is a bit of a reach.

anthony truman Squire split the seahorses because he didn't think they were good enough - truth is they weren't really. John also wanted to write all the songs and claim all the publishing...it was never going to work long term with the other members - especially Helme.
@SeahorsesJay
@SeahorsesJay 4 жыл бұрын
@@tc8066 Rubbish. Helme developed an ego, wanted to work in collaboration despite being hired for his services as a vocalist, not a writer. He frequently turned up to recording sessions drunk and belligerent and insisted on pursuing a solo career parallel to The Seahorses despite knowingly signing a contract to tie him down to the band. Squire couldn't be bothered dealing with a prima donna and walked away effectively ending all their careers and resigning Helme to the pub circuit. Shame because Heaney and Fletcher are excellent musicians.

@keithwellerlounge74 Жыл бұрын
@@-cityinthesky99 Hardly make out some of the lyrics? That’s common on many if not most released records. Especially if they put track upon track of overlays to make it really loud. Some even dull the vocals for effect. Now, if you subjectively did not like this album/playlist then that’s your personal feeling. But objectively, what we are hearing here are songs played by a band. The simplicity of good songwriting played well has value to the listener and in my opinion this was good enough to be released unfinished rather than not at all. By your logic, all live performances (including live albums) are not good enough for public consumption. I’m sure the band would have re-recorded these songs because that’s something that professionals do. But most people do not give a shit about minor imperfections, the particular artist’s vision, or terms like ‘guide tracks’. The average person just likes good music. This is good music. It would have worthy of being released because people would have enjoyed listening to it. Regardless of what the artist intended, I’ve listened to these track’s numerous times since I discovered it and have loved it. What’s more, when I shuffle The Seahorses on my IPhone I can’t tell which songs are from which album (being too young to have bought the first album when it came out.)

Love the comments calling Chris Helme "Helmet". Autocorrect I suspect. Anyway, what might have been... Saw them around the time You Can Talk To Me came out in Warrington. They played a load of new tunes and it was ace. The new drummer was much better, and if I'm not mistaken, there were little things on backing tracks on some songs, like the strings off the first album and some sound effects. Might be mistaken on that though. Definitely remember squire noodling so much at the end of one song that everyone had ceased cheering and clapping by the time he finally stopped.

They also played the unreleased songs City in The Sky and Moth that day, neither are on this bootleg but the TITP 98 recording isn’t too hard to find

Saw them at V98 supporting the Verve, they were really good much better than Verve on the night. Played a few tracks from the 2nd album that never was real shame as they were a really good group

Too many excellent B-Sides left off of their debut album in favour of some pretty crummy, filler tracks. 'Don't Try It', 'Shine', 'Falling Is Easy', '3 Wide', 'Moving On' and 'Dreamer' all relegated to B-Side status for some inexplicable reason. Well i'm putting together my own Seahorses album this weekend and they're all included.

I'm not sure on the accuracy of "Recorded at Olympic Studios with producer David Bottrill in January 1999" here. I have the original bootleg, which rumour has it was leaked by a few band members to make a few quid, and the sticker on the back reads that Night Train, Anamorphosis, and 700 Horses were recorded at Olympic Studios in Jan 1999, and that these were finished tracks for the album. The rest of it reads/was recorded at "Riverside Studios, Ossett (West Yorkshire), August 1998. Pre-run for Olympic Studios"

Chris said in an interview that he didn't like the lyrics and felt it was hard to get feel out of them if he's having to sing about lara croft so I assume that they did an alternative take with different lyrics

They walk away from an entire album, albeit an incomplete one. Something tells me this album was not good enough for Squire to complete it, which makes this album all the more beautiful to listen to.

Japanese heavy listener of this album on here ;) For some English speaker Plz tell me, (1) the original or daily meaning of, and (2)your interpretation of, the word "minus blue"" ? Is this used as "controlling color calibration down on blue tone, on canvas painting (Squire is a painter) or a TV, PC monitor etc ?

Too be honest, I think if this was released it would have finished them off anyway, so best left on the cutting room floor. I was a huge fan of 'DIY' and I've played with Chris Helme and he's a top geezer and performer, but the track 'Cocksucker Blues' sums this up for me, turgid title and turgid track, apart from a couple of glimmers it's all very ordinary.
