Come all you bold seamen, wherever you’re bound, And always let Nelson’s proud memory go round. And pray that the wars and the tumult may cease, For the greatest of gifts is a sweet, lasting peace. May the Lord put an end to these cruel old wars, And bring peace and contentment to all our brave tars.

Started out as a girl, became a burly man with a handlebar mustache, cried a manly tear, wiped it away with calloused hands hardened by my many years before the mast. 10/10 would listen again.

Not too long ago, I saw an old friend laid to rest to this song. I thought it beautiful at the time, and as the months went on, I felt it fitting to remember him by going down the sea shanty rabbit hole. And then - I found this. This song. This version. This voice. Mr. Coffin, your voice is nothing short of spectacular. Should I, in fact, one day find myself at the Pearly Gates - hopefully sometime long from now - if God’s voice doesn’t sound like yours, I suppose I’ll be a bit disappointed.

Agreed David indeed has a great voice. I especially appreciate the way he takes his time with the songs and doesn't try to scream or rush through them I know many Liturgical chanters and few are as talented as David Coffin. May our great God who loves all ,restore us to that likeness which is with Him. Which he created us in. God Bless David Coffin...

How old is this song and it's a call for peace from those fighting the wars of others. Nothing changes. I first saw David Coffin singing at Portsmouth (via youtube) 4 years ago and was amazed. What a stirring voice and personality. Fair play and good health all. Perhaps one day we will learn. The enemy is not without. Maybe we don't count on it though eh?
@DavidCoffinMusic4 жыл бұрын
Chris, the text was written by A.L Lloyd and loosely set to a Welsh hymn tune called Patience.
@Chris-qt5cb3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply David. That leads me to another artist I was not aware of. For all of it's faults, KZfaq is a musical rabbithole if you have the time and inclination to let yourself fall. What an asset eh? My Grandfather was Welsh and sailed out from Liverpool with all it's mixed history to many of the cold seas on the whaling ships. My dad still has the scrimshaw, teeth and eardrums. How strange a change in just a lifetime or two. Abhorant by todays standards quite rightly, but just a short while ago the world was lit by whale oil and viewed so very differently. Easy to forget the realities of life just a blink of an eye away. You nail the song as always. Many thanks for sharing. If fortune allows it, my round. Hope you like a Guinness. Chris
