To reach other intelligences our technology must reach beyond interplanetary distances it has to go interstellar distances.
The largest radio radar telescope on the planet Earth - Arecibo radio telescope - is located in Arecibo, Puerto Rico.
It is so powerful it could communicate with an identical one 15 thousand light years away. Half-way to center of Milky Way galaxy.
It was used to send a message to a star cluster M15. But is there anyone out there to talk to?
How far away is the nearest civilization capable of communicating with a radio telescope? If the galaxies are distributed randomly, the nearest one should be 200 light years away.
How would we know we are receiving a message from intelligent life form? Transmitting civilization could make it very easy for us if they wished. If one day we found a signal which was methodical series of pulses then we would conclude that someone is saying hello.
For example the signal could be all the prime numbers 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, ... which no natural source of radiation could transmit.
Our technology is now fully adequate for this challenge.
Why havent we yet discovered any and why hasn't they visited us? One answer is that maybe we are first? Some civilization has to be first.
Or maybe they have destroyed themselved. Or possibly they are already with us, just hiding.

This is what the net was meant to be the free exchange of ideas and information. Dr. Sagans lectures and philosphy on the web is wonerful and I get credit for my college class's.

RE: faster than light travel.. E=mc^2.. energy and mass are equivalent.. if you turn your pure mass ship into pure energy, you may go as fast as you wish...

Dr Sagan once said that he believed that humans were the first inteligent life in the universe. Someone has to be first after all. The universe is still very young and only one and a half sun cycles since the big bang. We are almost certainly alone.

Well even if we created a Tachyon engine, we could get close to the speed of light but not past it. The only other alternative, according to modern science, is a space warping system like Star Treks Warp Drive, Worm Hole generation like Farscape/Stargate, or Folding Space-time, punching a hole through to the other side (I.E. where you wanted to go e.g. Alpha Centauri)

I hope they finally find someone soon. There is probably other life forms in the universe. I am sure of it.

Maybe I'm just short-sighted, but the 'light barrier' seems impossible to break. Our current understanding of [hysics would have to be drastically revolutionized (a thing, I'll admit, not unheard of) for us to have any kind of feasible means of deep space exploration. *sigh* If it's possible, I can't fuckin wait.

As better as I know, this number is very low. Actually, in the observable universe there are: 10 million superclusters of galaxies 350 billion large galaxies 25 billion galaxy groups 7 trillion dwarf galaxies 30 billion trillion (3 X 10^22) stars source : look for fromquarktoquasars on facebook -
