To be honest the word "Sense" seems to be written something like this in "lautschrift/phonetic transcription "ˈzɛnzə (never liked that way of written the way you speak words...). So if you ask me saying "Zen-zeh" is a lot closer to "Sense/Scythe" than the english word "to sense". But still 'I have to agree to go with the way the charackters are pronounce the names as most often they are really close or even spot on.

To be fair he didn't say that Sense's character name WAS Japanese, he commented that "Zen-seh" was the Japanese "pronunciation," which is correct as the show is originally voiced in Japanese. It just happens to be a coincidence that both the Japanese and German pronunciations sound so similar that there is really no difference. There has been much discussion about the "Japanese-ified" (not my word) pronunciations of Frieren character names going around on Reddit for some time now. I have no idea why it seems to be a topic of interest to so many people nor is it unusual for me to be generally confused by human behavior. Just a tiny point of clarification but since it appears to be something you missed I felt it needed to be said in the event others did as well. Particularly since some of this shows more rabid fans have been unwilling to give this man a break over the tiniest things for some bizarre reason. ​@@genesishep For what it's worth, I only commented on this because he specifically asked about the pronunciation for Sense's name. I would not generally offer unsolicited critique of someone's pronunciation. And yes, I know he's probably already aware the names are German, but it's still useful to restate that fact because it provides context to anyone reading it for the rest of my comment talking about German pronunciation.

@@genesishep First: I never intend/intended to attack someone (I know you probably didn't mean me but as you said "the rabid fans") as I love civil discussions and hate people that attack you over dumb things so if you/someone perceved it like that then I am sorry. Second: I never thought that he said that her name was japanese but the part "You wouldn't want to say it like the English word "sense", because the German word Sense actually means "scythe" in English." was the part that somwhat started my comment as the only thing the english "sense" and the german word "sense" have in common is the writing in my opinion (except if there's another eng. "sense" I am not aware of or if I missread that part) Also I can't really think of many names that weren't actually spoken rather well from a german perspective (maybe except for the "ü" in Lügner but even that was okay) I think that might just be a case of having a limited number of sounds and a lot of similar ones as german. Third: I think people are interessted about the names as they atleast somewhat actually have a meaning (whether it's a charackter trait or similar) instead of just being "cool names". Sometimes it's just interesting to think what the mangaka's intentions were, but that could also just be me...

I wanted to add some things to the things you said here, Heiter is also used to describe someone that is drunk/tipsy Übel would be Imo more fitting to translate as nasty, but is usually still an descriptor for bad. Richter is probably more in reference to the Richter-scale used to determine the intensity of an earthquake, which is why he has earth magic. What I also love about Himmel's name is that it translates to heaven, which is Frieren's endgoal to meet with Himmel again.

Also, Wirbel should be pronounced "Veer-bell." German W's make an English "V" sound. Same with how Lawine is pronounced "Lah-vee-nay."
