Think you’ve seen all that Singapore’s museums have to offer? Think again. Less than 10% of Singapore’s National Collection of art and artefacts - which numbers over 250,000 - are actually on display at a time.
The rest are kept under 24-hour guard in a deceptively ordinary looking six-storey facility in Jurong. At the Heritage Conservation Centre, precious artefacts belonging to 11 of Singapore’s museums and heritage institutions are stored, conserved and readied for show.
We gain access to this high-security building and peek into its vaults, where some surprising finds await. Meet the people who work behind the scenes and find out what porcupine quills, termite poop and a blowtorch have to do with putting on a museum exhibition.

As a person who took history in secondary school I think its very nice to see so much care goes into over national treasures. Its good we preserve our heritage and history because it is important we know the roots of our nation.

When I was a kid, I was a fan of Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones and wanted to be a field archaeologist when I grew up. I mean there's not much left to dig up now after the European artefact bumrush of the 18th and 19th centuries, but I'd love to do work related to conservation of historical artefacts! Nice to see so many other young individuals in the industry and learning it is mostly a Learn OTJ career.

I dont agree i think we have dug up less then 10% of everything that we could and should.There are so many ancient sites and places on this earth (number is in the millions) that no one has ever dug up,looked at,investigated,researched and so on.

I’m also a collection manager and some times it hard explaining to friends and family wat I do. This video show you wat happens behind the scene in a museum. I’m going to everyone this.

Singapore is a place once under the king raja raja chola. He travel from thanjavur in tamil nadu, india. He concurred myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and even some South part of china. The Singapore stone which was found in the banks of the Singapore river was written in an undeciphered language. But now an archaeologist from Australia was able indentify a name in the rock." Virakesha varman." Which is another name for raja raja cholan. Its really amazing how the great king was here once.

Singapore was an important city state in the 70s, 80, 90s, and even early 2000s... but today most major asian capitals such as Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, even Jakarta are becoming metropolises, is an “advanced” independent city with modern subways still relevant when such wonders are present everywhere in south east asia these days? I think Singapore will need to have a wreckoning which country it wants to join in the next 50 years, Independent city-state is not a plan for the future. You need to choose now for the sake of your grandchildren...

Museums all over the world hoard tons of artefacts that no one can see, many get eaten by rats or rot away, what's the point ...

First: The point is that most artefacts in conservatories are being used by researchers from laboratories or universities when they are not displayed in museums. Many modern revelations of the past is through study of these artefacts while in conservation, not just during the short period they were uncovered on a dig site. Second: Very few are damaged beyond recovery by pests. Have you even been watching the video?
