Emergency keyboard, first-aid kazoo and the tactical survival theremin. Bill is just like MacGyver, if MacGyver made silly music bits instead of fixing things! But yeah, Bill is a damn clever bloke! A comedy treasure for sure! It's actually kinda amazing how well he paired with Dylan Moran in Black Books, since they're so very different people, yet both absolutely top-shelf artisans of comedy!

From the IMDb trivia for "Morse": _The opening notes of the theme music are based on the Morse code for the word "Morse", altered for musical purposes. The same notes are also included at the end and in places within the theme music. In the 1995 documentary "The Mystery of Morse: The Making of Morse", the composer stated that the theme sometimes spells the name of the murderer, a cryptic version of the name, or, as a red herring, an innocent character. However, there is _*_nothing_*_ documented on the Internet for any specific name or episode. Morse code experts say that, aside from the code for "Morse", any other Morse code-like notes in the theme are complete gibberish, probably because the code was modified greatly for musical purposes._ I've checked this myself and Pheloung does say that. But I've also searched the web looking for anyone who may have found the musical clues, and I couldn't find anything, either.

Fun fact: the four note-motive in the first movement in Beethoven's Fifth depict the letter V in morse code. The roman numeral for 5 resembles a V. Beethoven wrote the symphony decades before morse code was invented. During WW2, the Allies famously used the symphony to radio broadcast hope, unity and defiance to the occupied territories in Europe, as part of the V for Victory campaign.

The episodes often take longer to record than is shown on television. This Morse code segment took 5 months to record, mainly because of Alan's ankle injury that is mentioned and the shooting incident, which apart from the sound of the gunshot, has been completely edited out for broadcast (even from the XL version). Add on the little things, like the fact that Alan Davies absolutely shat himself and would have needed to at the very least change his soiled trousers and it's easy to see how this took so long to record. The guy in the audience discovered the Morse code 2 months after the introduction was recorded. It's just another example of a QI fact being proved wrong at a later date due to new discoveries. It's just that this example happened during recording so they could mention it.

He got the fact sort of right. The opening theme was always the same as you say, but when the soundtrack made an appearance mid-episode there was an opportunity to add extra messages in morse code. The messages didn't always point to the murderer either - sometimes they deliberately placed a red herring instead.

I some how doubt this. The domain was registered in 2015 (which is the oldest record of that domain), while the intro tune has been on the show since, at the very least 2009 (the oldest video I found of QI). Would that mean that the composer created a "morse code", that would result in a site that doesn't exist ? I highly doubt that. Unless the intro tune was changed in 2015 or after, then I call bollocks.

Yeah it's clearly a retcon. They've even gone to the effort of putting the morse code and its translation on sheet music, and if you understand sheet music, you can see that the morse code beneath it makes no sense and has no correlation with the rhythm, pitch, rests, or anything else. Stephen says it is the "minims and the crotchets" which correlate to the morse code, even though there are hardly any minims or crotchets used throughout the theme, they're mostly quavers or shorter. To try anjd give it more credence, they put a young, bright-looking plant in the audience, and claimed he spotted the code!
@vacri54
@vacri54 2 жыл бұрын
@@Tobotimus It's weird that I think it's a lot worse because they went for the plant in the audience. That moves it from being a bit of "ha-ha fooled you" to being intentionally deceitful just to make up content. I don't know why that element makes it worse for me, it just feels wrong to add that bit of 'authenticity' to it. Can't trust any of their "and we have them in the audience!" now...
@FredHickey
@FredHickey 2 жыл бұрын
Perhaps they did create it without the intent of leading to an actual site, back then the desire for people to follow up on the links on the net was highly underestimated unlike in recent years where even what producers think are random phone numbers are used but then people just call them and turns out to be a real number and some poor person gets harrased night and day by random people, especially considering it does not appear that QI made the original page.
@trueaussie9230
@trueaussie9230 2 жыл бұрын
@@FredHickey Other than 'emergency / public services' numbers, neither existing nor potential real phone numbers are EVER (intentionally) used in fictional content in movies or on TV, etc. In Hollywood productions phone numbers used to start with '555', a fictional area code assigned for that purpose. In most, if not all, 'developed' countries publishing a real private phone number in that manner would likely constitute a breach of privacy. Production companies are not stupid and they all have legal teams to advise them re avoiding the likes of 'harassment' claims.

"If you've got nothing better to do with your life" Ummm...were watching this. And if you use a little of the time Alan derails the show in, you have plenty of time to look, make yourself a cuppa, have another look and empty your blader before Stephen (now Sandy) can get it back on track...

The website no longer exists. When I typed it in, the "www" portion changed to "ww1" and it showed a blue page with "Related searches" and three boxes. One box with the line "Australian Online Pokies >", one with "Law Office >" and one with "Legal Attorneys >".

This is such bollocks. The morse code of that URL has absolutely no relation to the notes in the score whatsoever.

I am reminded that Rachel Riley stalked Bill Bailey. (She obsessively bought tickets to all his shows. Not real stalking. Just a throw away line one day.)

I loved the panel replies that if someone was arrested for the stalking it would be Bill anyway.

the domain without the and is registered by a cyber squatter. The non www version is incorrectly setup The non www A record should direct to a custom IP, with a redirect The Url itself goes to the QI KZfaq playlist.

But QI says the Morse Code isn't a code, it's a cypher and the alphabetical version was developed by Alfred Vail, Making it Vail's Cypher.

If you do that kind of thing with a web site name then maybe hold on to the URL for quite some time.. It now keads to a site with sex toys :-)

The Morse Code matching with the song as it continues is a bit iffy. And yet, someone discovered and decoded it? I call shenanigans.
