When it comes to the zombies, I wouldn't be surprised if a character who is strong enough can enforce some of their original will and personality onto the shadow. It could also be the age of the corpse. Because Oars has been a corpse longer than Ryuma and Ryuma has been a corpse longer than Captain John.

I think the bodies of the zombies Hogback creates retains the memory of their original owner. If you recall during the fight between Hogback and Cindry versus Chopper and Robin, the Cindry zombie managed to smile at Chopper. Which is also kinda cool since Chopper reminded the zombie about her past life, essentially embodying Hiluluk's belief that people die when they are forgotten.

My friend had a theory that God Valley might actually be Thriller Bark, and the reason there are so many dead bodies is because of the "Rabbit Hunt" that the celestial dragons held on the island. Thriller Bark just so happens to be Kuma's introduction arc as well, where he arrived holding a bible. We also saw the giant shadow sea creature (Umi Bozū) for the first time in this arc, one of the few mysteries in OP that likely leads back to Imu, as his DF form looks similar to an Umi Bozū 👀👀

Thriller Bark = God Valley on a narrative perspective. Lola, Kuma, General Zombies, first time Kaido is mentioned. There are a few parallels.

Its really cool how the Zombie Generals are made up of the Rocks Pirates. It makes me wonder if Oda had thought of it from the beginning or simply thought it would be interesting to integrate the Generals in the larger storyline.

You forget about Cindry and Chopper at Thriller Bark. The original Cindry didn't hate plates but the owner of the Shadow did. But when Chopper tells her that she is a person, that she is Cindry, she began crying which was very unsual for Hogback to witness. The Shadow dictates the personality, but the real person (a fading soul) is in there.

I'm sure Oda would clarify the Zombie thing by saying "it's muscle memory". Like the zombies remember things from their life since they've already done those things. The shadow just animates and influences the personality.

15:58 the corpse may have more influence than you think, if you consider Cindry's whole story Edit:in case you don't remember, Cindry's corpse basically forced the shadow within into a standstill after being listening to Chopper's words about life and death. It had nothing to do with Haki in that case.

There could definitely be some connection between Moria collecting corpses that were members of Rocks' crew and the fact that his own original crew was eventually wiped out by Kaido... who was once a member of the Rocks Pirates himself.

The zombie will also adopt the shadow's personality quirks, though the zombie will eventually lose these quirks and become subservient to the Devil Fruit user. The zombie, however, is only as strong as the body it is composed of. This seems to indicate that the Zombie has the quirks of the Shadow's original owner but not the entire personality, and they will eventually lose those quirks.

What if Moria's ship, Thriller Bark, is based on the land of God Valley? That's why he has so many zombies there, including Rock's pirate zombies.

I think the zombie thing is about the body not just being a meat suit for the brain to operate, it's just as integral to who the person is and it remembers stuff too. And honestly being an alcoholic would be remembered by the body more than by the soul, if you reanimate a corpse that has needed alcohol to survive for decades, that zombie is gonna drink lmao

What if capt john was the previous user of the alcohol fruit? Makes sense to me that if the shadow carries luffys devil fruit, the zombie wouldnt have an already reincarnated devil fruit

I don't know how it works, but I do believe that despite dead, the body still retains an element of its original soul : we can see it with Ryuma, but also with Cindry : when Chopper spoke to her, reminding her of her humanity, we briefly see her shedding tears attesting that, despite having someone else's shadow, a bit of Cindry was still left

The personality of a zombie probably has to do with a tug of war between the strength of will of the Shadow's original bearer against the will of the user of the Kage-Kage no mi. Moria commands his zombies to embody specific traits that he associates with the bodies the shadow's inhabit. Ryuma claims with pride to be a samurai of wano, captain John drinks and fiends for treasure, and, as a counter, Oars loses most of his personality. My personal idea is that the personality of the zombie, once they are fully under Moria's contol, are commanded by Moria to "be" a certain person and the zombie responds by embodying Moria's specific idea of the person he commands them to "be". Moria's understanding of captain John is pretty shallow so outside of drinking he doesn't have a personality. So is his understanding of Ryuma. Moria hardly understands Wano's culture or history so Ryuma doesn't get anything except Brook for a personality. Oars is a legend hundreds of years removed so Moria has no concept of his personality, so besides Luffy he has nothing.

Capt. John was a weird one cuz Absalom had to remind him, "Dont crush the reputation you made during your notorious life" as if he was talking to the actual Capt. John. Maybe at some point the shadow just fully lives as the body's identity due to how long they've been in that body and thus becomes that person, much like how Brook 's shadow fully believes he is the sword god Ryuma

I believe the shadow zombies take on the mannerisms of the shadow but retain the personality of original body. When Ryuma and Zoro speak it sounds like Brook but its still Ryuma saying them. How your body speaks, moves and even attacks are just a shadow of who you are. Even in death the body itself remembers who you were. This all gets muddy due to the side effects of a new shadow being placed in a corpse, which we see a lot of in that arc, in which the shadow retains a lot of the personality of the owner of the shadow. I think once the shadow settles into a new body it allows the personality of that body to express itself through the mannerisms of the shadow.

I think the zombies start with the full personality of the shadow. As time passes the personality starts to dissipate until it's all or almost all gone. The thing that remains is just the muscle memory of the body or what the body remembers.

If the theory is true, that Thriller Bark is actually God Valley. Then look at the surrounding area within the outer walls of Thriller Bark, you can see watch towers and walls on the island. And right in the front, you can see someone broke through the wall because the wall is destroyed. And if it's God Valley, someone destroyed the Valley and mountains and built a castle in the middle. The castle Hogback lives in could of been made by Maria or hogback. The rest of the island actually looks older then the main castle

Why does it feel like Moria was also a apprentice rocks pirate, or a rejected member seeing that he had a bunch of their corpse after their collapse.

Looking at the Rocks panel very closely you can even make out Streusen in the bottom right corner below Whitebeard. You can see his pointy nose and scarf.

I believe the shadow brings in a soul of a new person, but the corpse brings in the memories. So the zombie remembers its life and acts on with those memories while having the personality of the shadow. So it’s really just a fusion of two people.

Maybe if the body was strong enough it could basically overwhelm the shadow by muscle memory
